"With one last look, one final search of the lines of his face for some sign, Kira turned and ran away from the sound of the man she loved laughing in the face of her death."
When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they're keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan's lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.
I absolutely loved this
story. Kira is the new girl at
school. She is kind of a foodie, cooking
for her family gives her an escape and a way to touch base with herself. She has dreams of going to culinary school –
right after she takes a year off after graduation. She has curly red hair, sometimes described
as strawberry blonde, and some unusual eyes.
Right away at school she meets Luke, classic boy next door, All American
type guy. They become fast friends, and
he introduces her to the rest of his group.
But Kira soon discovers she’s
garnered the attention of another group of kids at school, and they are… well,
dark. Meet Diana, John, Jerome and
Tristan. They seem oddly interested in
her, always seemingly staring at her.
Especially that Tristan.
Enter Tristan. Broody, ice blue eyes, black hair, pale,
built. Oh yeah, I instantly love
Tristan. No mistake about it. The guy has charisma and mystery and you want
to get to know him better. And so does
Kira. She finds herself performing surf
stunts that are way out of her league in fact, just to pretend that she is not
affected by him. But she is. Everyone is!
How can you not be!?!?
Then Kira’s life is
threatened and the truth comes out about who, no, what she is. She is a conduit. Basically it means that she can channel the
sun. Well, why would someone want to do
that? To kill vampires, of course! (Disclaimer: The author of this blog, Liz,
does not in any way endorse the killing of vampires) And here’s the rub, her new boyfriend –
Tristan – just happens to be a vampire!! Yikes, talk about relationship
drama. Luckily she has Luke there to
help her through it. But let’s not leave Luke out in the cold, the classic boy
next door also happens to be a conduit!
Soon Kira learns that she is a hybrid of sorts, and her very existence
could mean the end of the world!
Ok, those are the facts. Now lets go with the feelings. I really liked this story!! It had a very different spin on the vampire
slayer twist. And not all conduits want
to kill vampires, some want to protect them. This little secret society that
has been around forever is very interesting and fresh.
Ok ladies, let me get back to
the real meat of it. Tristan. Holy moody hot guy, he is wonderful. Sure, he’s over a century old, but you can’t
hold that against him. I love how he
always appears from nowhere, and I am definitely “Team Tristan”. He is deep and sensitive, and he has this
never bottoming love for Kira. He’s everything
I look for in a YA Vampire Heart-throb.
Even if their relationship is ultimately doomed I am rooting for them
every step of the way.
