Excerpt

Without a word, Matthew reached out, took Emily by the hand and pulled her down beside him. He looked into her eyes and smiled. “I knew my Emily was still in there.”

Out of the blue, the room became incredibly hot, as if Gabriel had entered in order to give a lesson to his favorite students. “What?”

“That spark.” He pulled Emily’s face closer before she could push herself away. “You’ve been acting all this time like you’re just here to sit and wait it out until you’re lucky enough to go Home. But you’re still in there, Emily. You still have all that energy and belief in there and you want to do something. That’s the partner I know.”

Shaking her head, Emily listened to her own breathing intensify as she stared at his full lips and wondered why she felt so completely and utterly strange...vulnerable even. “I want to help this girl. This is a job, maybe my only job down here. She saw a ghost and she wants me to help her out, that’s all.”

“And you will.” Matthew captured Emily’s lips, and she could no longer feel the breath in her lungs. Completely different than the one kiss they’d shared up above so long ago, this one was far more demanding, as if Matthew was a young man determined to kiss his human love for the very first time.

Sitting back, Emily practically jumped off the bed.

“I’m sorry,” she heard him whisper behind her. “I guess I was just excited to see you again.”

Not trusting her voice, she remained silent.

“We have jobs, but we also have a life to live. Our own lives this time around. Maybe you should think about adding that into your angelic plans.” Matthew continued softly, “Jason isn’t here, Emily.”

The name being said out loud sent a chill down Emily’s spine. It reminded her of the vow she’d made a long time ago—a vow that an angel couldn’t break.

She cleared her throat. “It doesn’t matter if he’s here. We were sent to do a job, and maybe helping this little girl prove her story is what I need to begin.”

Standing up, Matthew looked as if he was a man who wanted nothing more than to turn back the clock and erase the name he’d spoken aloud. He walked to the open window. “Well, I hope the job goes well. Good luck with it.”

“Matthew,” Emily took a step toward him. “Don’t leave like this.”

He nodded at the book on the bed. “You have your mission, Emily...your job. Ghosts, goblins, lost souls—knock yourself out.” He took a deep breath. “I wonder when you’re going to figure out that the living souls around you would like some of your attention as well.”

Closing her eyes, Emily shed silent tears as she heard his feet hit the ground beneath her window. A friend, a partner, the one who actually listened, was now just an angry young man racing back to The Armory—a place where warriors reigned.

Emily sighed. She’d done it again. No matter how hard she tried to be good, her mouth always got her into trouble. She needed Matthew to understand. She’d made a promise to a young man a long time ago; a promise that was supposed to last for eternity. How was she to know at the time that their eternity would include death by her hand? Had the second time around broken their vow? Emily had no idea. But whatever happened she could not and would not offer Matthew her heart if payment was still due for her past sins. Above all, Matthew was the last person who deserved to be punished for her mistakes.

Gilded Wings by Amy Lignor, Read Along, Guest Post, Giveaway

Gilded Wings
The Angel Chronicles
Amy Lignor

The Beloved Angel-Warrior Team from Until Next Time Returns!

When Matt and Emily are sent on their second mission they have no idea how truly dark human nature can become...

Emily never wanted to face humans again. With the heartache that went on down below, she’s still trying to figure out how to save souls that don’t deserve saving. The only one she wants to see again is Jason - the young man she fell in love with who became the soulmate she simply can’t forget...

Matt was trained to protect and defend the souls down below. Longing to feel the heartfelt emotions that come from being human, Matt wants nothing more than to have just one life - one chance - to live and love the girl of his dreams...

The powerful team find themselves in a brand new century, living in the Gilded Age of New York City. Emily takes over the body of Anya, a young Russian girl who arrives on Ellis Island after a hideous tragedy. There she meets up with a strangely familiar young man by the name of Drew Parrish, who helps Anya survive in an unknown world of luxury, snobbery and…obsession.

What Anya’s inner angel doesn’t know is that the soul she loves is also back. This time around Jason goes by the name of Max Carrow. Once a quiet and kind boy, he’s now part of the ‘Four Hundred Club,’ and wants nothing more than to be among the most admired as he climbs the shaky ladder of society’s elite.

As two worlds merge, Emily and Matt struggle under the weight of their “Gilded Wings.” Not only will they have to figure out who they should fight to save, but they must also face a romantic choice that could destroy them both.

**Excerpt for Read-Along**
Turning back to Anya, Drew began the introductions. “Miss Anya, this is the undeserving heir to all you see, Mr. Maxmillian Carrow. You can call him Max, even though he prefers, ‘Your Grace.’ Oh, I forgot, you should always bow to him and treat him as if he were royalty—he really likes that.”

Max pushed the large Irishman aside and a friendly smile appeared on his amazingly handsome face. “Don’t listen to my old friend. He’s not of sound mind. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Miss Churchill.”

Anya shook the hand that was offered. Before her stood the complete opposite of Myles. Max Carrow was just about six-feet tall, yet still well below his Irish comrade towering beside him. His hair was jet black and feathered away from his face, and even though he exuded the air of a gentleman, his mysterious dark eyes shone with a boy’s mischief. His face was flawless; the strength of his gait, grip and his muscular body made Anya’s insides quiver. Quickly averting her gaze, she tried with all her might to stop the sudden warmth that flowed through her body like lava.

What Character Do You Most Identify With?
*Guest Post by Amy Lignor*

I love this question, by the way. It comes up in all kinds of interviews. And, think about it, you can identify with everyone from historical figures to movie characters, book characters - even your next door neighbor who lives with a hundred cats, if you want to.

I read recently that one writer - on his horrific days where he can’t seem to write a word - finds himself identifying most with the Captain of the Titanic as the iceberg approaches. I loved that answer, and boy does it fit. As a writer, when the scene is going extremely bad, that iceberg actually looks like a gift.

When it comes to The Angel Chronicles, I love Matthew the most, but I will always identify with Emily. She’s a bit more sarcastic, to say the least, and she’s a bit more tortured - loving her job, yet sometimes wishing that she didn’t have to do it. In fact, she even admits in Until Next Time that she doesn’t understand why they even bother to help souls in the first place, seeing as that there are so many bad ones who don’t deserve it. She has a great deal of questions, and also has a love that’s tearing her up inside because she can’t figure out what the right ‘move’ is. If she falls and falls hard, she may end up being hideous at her job because her mind will be on the ‘one’ and not on what she’s supposed to be doing. She also has the added struggle of Jason versus Matthew; a best friend versus a romance. Can there be two soul mates for one person? That’s the burning question.

Matthew knows his job, loves his job and has no qualms about what he does. But, with Gilded Wings, he begins to see Emily’s point of view. That’s why the cover - which was drawn so beautifully by Emma Michaels - shows Matthew in a more ‘lost’ sense. He’s waiting for the girl and partner he loves…but has no idea what he will have to give up in order to do the job he was sent to do.

The other character I really identify with is Leah Tallent. In a new series titled, Tallent & Lowery, Leah is a librarian who becomes stuck in a puzzle of mammoth proportions. She must use her intricate mind to solve mysteries that a man by the name of Gareth Lowery needs her help with. Independent, brutally sarcastic at times and hysterically funny, Leah hides a huge heart that begins to scare her a great deal. When writing Leah, I laugh. She has the lines that I love and that I remember on a daily basis. And she - like Matthew and Emily - has become very real to me.

So think about it. What character do you identify with? Are you into the macabre like Poe? Are you into the romantic soul of a Jane Austen star? Perhaps you feel close to the kids on Glee (which is a cool show, by the way), or perhaps you’re the Sherlock Holmes of your generation? I would love to know!

That’s where the power of books and movies come into play for someone like me. There are so many thrilling and unforgettable characters out there, that our world becomes way more fun when it’s filled with the Arts. An industry we should never take for granted!

Until Next Time, Everybody,
Amy

Owlet by Emma Michaels: Excerpt, Guest Post, and Tour Giveaway

Owlet
Society of Feathers, #1
Emma Michaels

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

***Excerpt for Read-Along***
The water felt like hundreds of knives slicing into Falcon’s skin, ice cold and deadly. He knew the water was tearing half of his soul from his body and soon all he would have was instinct if he could just keep moving.

I won’t last long but neither will she. I can’t lose her again. I can’t lose her. Please, Iris, hang in there. Please...you don’t know how much you mean to me. Iris! He saw her, swimming deeper he grabbed her leg and pulled it towards him. Reaching his arm around her stomach, Falcon held her to his side and started to swim for the surface. He couldn’t think anymore, just act, but his body seemed to be fueling a type of primal fear when he realized he was carrying dead weight. She wasn’t moving.

Her soul had never been separated from her body before. She might not make it. He got to the surface and Diana was waiting. He felt like he was about to collapse but he picked Iris up, draping her over both of his arms, and started to run for the house. Diana was running by their side. “You won’t last long. I don’t even know how you are still breathing.”

Falcon wanted to answer her but part of his soul was still adjusting, still trying to mend the wounds the water had just made deep inside him. Even if he could speak, the cold water made his teeth chatter too fiercely for any words to escape. You have no idea what I can or cannot do for Iris. I would do anything for her.

Iris in the Garden Drawing
By Emma Michaels

I have always had a love for art, even before I was able to draw stick figures. Which, by the way, I was terrible at even doing that until the sixth grade when I found a teacher who said no artists are “good” or “bad” at art, they either do it or they don’t. So I decided to become a better artist and over the years… well, I can do more than stick figures now! In fact, I am a cover artist for a number of publishers and love to help designers bring their silk screen designs to life in my free time.

So naturally, as my ideas for Owlet grew, so did my collection of sketches of the characters. I have decided to give away four sketches and one partial acrylic painting or Iris for the release. This particular sketch was done with a pen only last year. Elena’s garden has played some part in each of the drafts of Owlet. In some version it played a small part and in others a very large one but it was always there.

While sitting by the side of a large window at a friend’s house I was looking out at her garden and daydreaming about the garden from Owlet. I imagined what it would be like to just lay there in that garden surrounded by all of the beauty. I pulled my sketch book out and started to draw. As first just a few little flowers making a heart, then a stick of lavender, a poppy and a long stemmed rose and before you know it, I was drawing Iris.

I ended up liking the piece so much that I kept it - until now. I want someone to get to share that wonderful garden fantasy.

Ever since, she has tried to make her life something new and different from what it was before, pursuing her future career, setting high goals and reaching for them.
