"Book boyfriends of 2011!  Make a list but you can only use books you've read this year."

What a fun question to end the year!  And a tough one!

First, my favorite book boyfriend this year would definitely be Gabriel Tauhou, from the Silver Dragon Series by Katie MacAlister.  Gabriel is the leader of the silver dragons.  Dragon Shifter and he can set you on fire!  'Nuff said.  My review HERE

Second... I really loved Slade, from Ink by Holly Hood.  I just read this book last week, but I fell in love with it right away!  He's a witch, He's tattooed, and pierced, and he can get you a whole new wardrobe just with a thought ;)  If you haven't read it, I seriously think you should! My review (and giveaway until Dec 30!) HERE

Hmmm...Third.  Justin Seward from The Calling, by Ashley Lynn Willis.  Justin works for the Coast Guard as a rescue swimmer.  Oh yeah, and he is a descendant of Triton and can command the seas *and* he is hot and sweet! My review HERE

Fourth - Jake Silver!!  He is a wolf shifter from Dreaming of the Wolf by Terry Spear.  Of course, he has all the wolfy attributes we all want *plus* he can visit you in your dreams :) My review HERE

And lastly, Alastor from Spiritus by Dana Michelle Burnett.  He may be a ghost, but he's got more passion than most living men!  My review HERE

I can't wait to hear what your picks are!!  Do you agree with any of mine (and can you share nicely lol)?  Let me know in the comments, and leave a link to your DLS!

Title: Hush, Hush
Author: Becca Fitzpatrick

Format read: Personal Print Copy

From Goodreads:
For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She's never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her. Not until Patch came along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment.

But after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora's not sure who to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can't decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is way more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel.

For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen - and, when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life

*** *** *** *** *** ***
The premise of the book is the typical paranormal teenage romance, at first too much like that OTHER paranormal romance, Twilight, but at the same time is refreshing to read about fallen angels and archangels living amongst humans. From the first page to the last page I couldn’t put the book down wanting to find out the story behind falling angels.  For over 300 pages that felt like 10 I was immersed in the world of fallen Angels with Patch a dark, handsome, mysterious man  that at times seems too cocky and others too vulnerable who is trying to figure out his place in the world. Then there is Nora, the average high school student, shy, smart barely popular which makes the perfect combination for these star crossed lovers.

Nora and Patch are forced together as lab partners who seem to hate each other at first, but as Nora starts to get disturbing dreams that are very vivid, she finds that the only person she can trust is Patch. As she comes to grip with who he really is, she must decide if he is her enemy or her savior.  Throughout the story she must figure out if everything in her life is true or she’s living a nightmare where a lurking enemy is trying to kill her for reasons mysterious reasons.

As someone who believes that there is a reason for everything and everyone that bumps into our lives, Nora and Patch’s story reminded me that sometimes answers are closer than we think. The story took my imagination into what some believe is a reality about falling angels being closer than we think.  This refreshing book is well worth the read if you want to explore the supernatural romance genre besides vampires and werewolves.

Fate's Second Chance Book Tour - AJ Jarrett - Giveaway

Today at Fictional Candy, I have the pleasure of welcoming author AJ Jarrett to post!  Thank you very much, AJ, for joining us, and I wish you the best of luck on your book tour!

***** ***** *****

Let me start off by saying hello and season greetings to everyone. It’s that busy time of year for me, as for most people, and trying to get all my ducks in a row is hard to do. Time has just flown by this past year and I find myself looking around thinking where has the time gone?

A year ago January I decided I wanted to become a writer. I wanted to try my hand at creating stories to entertain others. I love to read and most of my waking hours was spent with my head in a book or my laptop reading and finally I decided to take the plunge. My imagination would run wild with possible story ideas and instead of waiting for another author to write about what I thought was interesting I decided to put my own thoughts to paper or keyboard as it was. Lucky for me I found a publisher who thought my book was good enough to publish and here I am today promoting my first release Fate’s Second Chance.

Never in a million years would I have thought I would be fortunate enough to be a published author but I proved myself wrong. I tell my kids to set goals and work hard for what they want and my own advice paid off for me. I love to write and bring the crazy dialogues I hear in my head to life and it puts a huge smile on my face when others enjoy my work.

My contacts have been provided by my excellent host. Feel free to contact me. I enjoy hearing from fellow readers. Without out you my dream wouldn’t be possible. Thank you for stopping by and listening to me ramble on. Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!

Ink - Holly Hood - Plus Giveaway

Title: Ink
Author: Holly Hood

Format: Ebook provided by author for review

From Goodreads:
Hope didn’t ask for so much change in her life. She was happy living in Georgia for the rest of her life. Focusing on the things she loved the most: singing, dancing, and her best friend Karsen. This was effortless, she had no worries.

But all that changed when her mother decided to leave her dad for Pete, the Tae Kwon do instructor. And now Hope had to choose between staying where she belonged or moving far away to Cherry California with her dad.

After making the choice to move far away, to protect her father, Hope realizes Cherry is nothing like the hometown she’s used to. Everyone is rude, high class and she doesn’t fit in. Not until Slade comes along. He has never fit in and he is okay with that. And Hope is fascinated by everything that Slade is. All the way down to his tattoos and bat wielding rescue the first time they meet.

She knows she should stay far away from him, but it proves tricky as she discovers dark secrets about the town and people in Cherry, California. Hope doesn’t know who to trust as her life takes a turn from ordinary and depressing to dangerous and wild.

This really was a fantastic read.  I was captured right from the beginning, and found myself staying up late and getting up early so I could read more.

The book starts off with Hope and some of her family moving out to Cherry, CA.  They are a family divided, and her paternal grandmother lives out west, so they decide to leave GA.   They aren’t rich, but they are definitely moving to a wealthy area.  Hope, her dad, and two of her brothers (Eliot and Easton – twins) pack up the van and are on their way.

Right away Hope meets a few people, and they are all kind of haughty.   She manages to make a couple friends right away, but no one like her bestie back home, Karsen.

And then one night she sees a bunch of people walking down the beach, and they are all heading the same direction.  She decides to investigate and comes upon a rock concert! The crowd is enthralled, and soon starts to get wild.  But someone is coming to Hope’s rescue, a guy full of tattoos, mystery, and carrying a baseball bat!  His name is Slade, and he saves her from the rock hungry crowd.

And then Hope meets Tucker.  He’s the classic all American boy type:  fantastically good looking, charming.  And he’s giving Hope lots of attention.  What girl wouldn’t be flattered and excited?

Boy, these two guys, Slade and Tucker, really had me in a tug of war for the first half of the book.  I could easily see how Hope was having trouble picking just one.  But luckily that difficulty doesn’t last.  She goes on dates with each of them.

Slade and Hope’s first date is the perfect teen dream.  Two young people learning about each other, fanning that spark.  The undertow of excitement, curiosity and fascination took me back in time and made me want more, more, more!  I thought right there I had made my mind up, regardless of the story I was picking Slade.

But then Tucker picks Hope up for the first day of school and he seems so sweet and genuine.  Could it be true?  I was wrestling with myself mentally here.  He seems so intent on getting to know her better and definitely on a flirtier level.  I must admit, if it was me I would have totally fallen for his tactics.  Flirty, fun, carefree.  Then I made my mind up again, I wanted Tucker.

And then I flip flopped around, every new fact giving you more information.  Do you go with the mainstream and play it “safe” or do you go outside your boundaries where there is passion and danger?

So which does she pick?  Who steals her heart?  And whose mystery is more dangerous than fun?  This book was really good at keeping you guessing.  The author gives you a little hint, then steers you in a new direction.  But either way, you are glued to the page, waiting to see where the path goes.   You get to see the characters really develop and grow all while going on a great trip.  I got mad, I got happy, and I was anxious and scared.  It was a lengthy book, but for me it went superfast and would be positively happy if it were even longer – or a series!

I agree with Holly Hood, this book doesn’t exactly fit into a YA category.  There are some mature scenes.  It is probably best left for eyes 16 and over.  And with that said, I think that the paranormal fans will be happy, along with love story fans, and even some mystery fans.

Guest Post: Alina Adams - Murder on Ice

Today I am lucky enough to welcome Alina Adams, author of Murder on Ice to Fictional Candy.  Please give her a warm welcome, and enter for your chance to win a copy of her novel at the end of the post!

“MURDER ON ICE: ENHANCED MULTIMEDIA EDITION”
By Alina Adams

(Originally published in 2003 by Berkley Prime Crime.  Re-released in 2011 as an Enhanced E-Book)

PROLOGUE

Prior to starting her first season as a figure-skating researcher for the 24/7 network, Rebecca "Bex" Levy received an iceberg-high load of advice.

Some of it was concise.

"Don't screw up," Gil Cahill, 24/7 Sports' Executive Producer told her.

Some of it was obscure.

"A cheated triple Axel is not a quadruple toe loop," coach Gary Gold lectured.

Some of it was obvious.

"I need all my research prior to the start of the event," commentator Francis Howarth intoned meaningfully, while his wife Diana stood nearby, rolling her eyes and needling, "I think she knows that, dear. I hardly think Bex was planning to give you your information after the closing credits rolled."

But only one piece of advice turned out to be actually useful.

"Remember," 24/7's veteran skating director told Bex before their first production meeting for their first event, "The skating season is not a sprint. It's a marathon. Ration your energy accordingly."

He wasn't kidding. The skating season, which had once encompassed the European and U.S. championships in January, followed by the world championships in February, and once every four years an Olympics followed by ten months of getting ready for next year, now stretched from early September to late March, with senior and junior eligible competitions, ineligible competitions, pro-ams, exhibitions, Grand Prix events, a Grand Prix final, nationals, Europeans, world championships, and once every four years an Olympics followed by a five-month, thirty-city tour of champions. And then three whole weeks to relax, regroup, and get ready for next year.

The killer schedule—if it's Tuesday, it must be Biellmann spins—took its toll on everyone connected to the sport. Not only the athletes, who dutifully packed up their sequined costumes practically every weekend for yet another jaunt to Europe, to Asia, to Canada, to New York and California and back again, but also on the coaches, parents, team leaders, doctors, judges, choreographers, skate sharpeners, nutritionists, agents, publicists, makeup artists, seamstresses, hair stylists, print journalists, Internet journalists, and assorted other hangers-on. And then there was the television media: commentators, directors, producers, cameramen, technical directors, tape operators, sound mixers, editors, production managers, production coordinators, production assistants, and researchers—let's not forget the researchers!—all of whom arrived days before the competition commenced to set up their crews and command centers and stayed days after the event ended to edit and transmit and clean.

Naturally, as a result of jetting off every few days to yet another time-and-strain-of-flu zone, by the time the world championships rolled around, everyone, from skater to entourage to media hack, was exhausted. And even though the world championships were currently being held in the U.S.—San Francisco, California, in point of fact; home of the Golden Gate Bridge and record-breaking earthquakes, but not, Bex made a point of highlighting in her research notes, Rice-A-Roni—which at least meant less travel time for the American delegation, everyone was still dead tired from seven months of globe-trotting and eating strange, greasy foods and sleeping in strange, greasy beds and bathing in strange showers with drains that somehow seemed to be perennially clogged.

Everyone, as a result, was operating on a very, very short fuse.

That was why, in only ten days of competition, they'd already seen eleven hysterical meltdowns, eight formal complaints about biased judging, seven countercomplaints about biased refereeing, five screaming matches, four out-and-out fistfights, two reporters getting their credentials pulled, and one arrest (disturbing the peace; Belgium's ice dancer decided to celebrate his bronze medal win by doing a naked Yankee polka on the roof).

And this was all even before the Italian judge turned up dead.

*   *   *

I am not Rebecca “Bex” Levy.  I am Alina Adams.  However, from 1995 to 2001, I too was a figure-skating researcher.

I worked the US and World Championships for ABC, the Grand Prix for ESPN, the 1998 Olympics for TNT and a series of professional shows for NBC.

I too was given an iceberg high load of advice (with “Don’t screw up,” being right at the top of the list), and I saw a great deal of behind-the-scenes things which, as a credentialed professional whose job it was to make the sport and its athletes look their best, I was not allowed to share.

Until now.

Well, technically, until 2002, when my toddler son’s obvious displeasure with my hectic travel schedule (he more or less quit talking to me), prompted me to hang up my research binder and take a job closer to home – writing a figure skating mystery series for Berkley Prime Crime.

The disclaimer at the front of every book in the series (also including “On Thin Ice,” “Axel of Evil,” “Death Drop” and “Skate Crime”) states that the characters represented herein bear no relationship to anyone living or dead.  That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

When the books were merely paperback originals, that’s all I needed to say.

But, now, I’ve knocked the whole series up a notch.

Because I didn’t just re-release “Murder on Ice” as an e-book.  I re-released it as an enhanced e-book, with skating videos provided by The Ice Theatre of New York included along with the text as a part of the story!

So now, here’s what we’ve got: We’ve got fictional characters based on no one currently living or dead being performed by real-life (currently living) skaters who most certainly bear no relationship to the fictional characters they are portraying on the ice, except physically.

Got that?

In other words, the skaters you see in the “Murder on Ice: Enhanced Multimedia Edition” e-book videos are just actors playing characters from the story, who are based on real-life skaters who are not the ones you are watching.

(Somehow, I suspect I just confused matters further…)

In any case, “Murder on Ice: Enhanced Multimedia Edition” is an experiment on my part with multimedia storytelling.  It’s not exactly a book, it’s not exactly a movie.  It’s more like a merger of the two.

Eventually, I intend to release all five books in my Figure Skating Mystery series as Enhanced Multimedia Editions.  But, I would love feedback from readers about how I can make the experience better for them (you).  Please contact me via my website, http://www.AlinaAdams.com to give me your thoughts.

(You do not need a designated e-reader to experience “Murder on Ice: Enhanced Multimedia Edition.”  All you need is the free Kindle or Nook apps, and you can access the book via your phone, your laptop or your desktop computer.)

Spiritus - Dana Michelle Burnett

Title: Spiritus, a Paranormal Romance (Spiritus Series, Book #1)

Author: Dana Michelle Burnett

Format: Ebook provided by author for review.

From Goodreads:
A love that refuses to die…

“As I watched him vanish into a soft mist that faded away, I knew that he was no ordinary spirit…I knew that he was a dangerous entity that could be in some corner of another realm planning his revenge, but I also knew that I was hopelessly in love with him.”

When Becca moves into her ancestral home in Corydon, Indiana, her life takes a puzzling and thrilling turn when she meets the ghost haunting the halls. As the seductive spirit lures her closer and closer, she learns about her own past and starts to understand that some mistakes are meant to last.

Becca McAllister has always been different from other girls her age. Never part of the "in crowd", Becca never really fit in anywhere. When her mother dies and her father moves them to the small town of Corydon, Indiana, Becca didn't expect things to change.

But things do change when Becca accidentally makes contact with a one hundred and sixty year old ghost, Alastor Sinclair, that haunts the halls of her new home.

To Becca, Alastor is a seductive spirit that seems to see straight into her soul. To Alastor, Becca is what he was waited a century for--A second chance.

But the closer they get, the more Becca realizes that this isn't the first time she and Alastor have known each other. Worse still, is she the one responsible for his death so long ago? And if so, did he come back for love or revenge?

Ok folks, here ya go.  I am definitely adding this book to my favorites of 2011, and I absolutely can't wait for book 2.  Would it be wrong of me to want to email Dana every day to check when it will be released?  Ok, yes, that would be wrong - but that's how much I enjoyed this novel!

The story opens with teenage Becca and her dad driving to their new home, a house that's been in the family for generations.  There has been a tragic loss in the family, and they are trying to make it in a new place, a new life.

Becca seems to be the average awkward teen, a bit shy and self-conscious. Alastor is a ghost, barely older than Becca, who died a century ago.

My first chapter impression (as taken from my notes):  I love the attention to detail, right down to the doorknobs.  It really makes me feel as if this house, this town, is another character in the story.  Becca seems to be a teenager that you could easily relate to.  Her sadness and fears are conveyed so well, I feel great empathy for her.

In the beginning of this book Becca is meeting all of her new classmates, and she makes some new friends.  One of them being the high school hottie, Jonah.  At first I was torn between Jonah and his beautiful good looks and Alastor.  But that all changed once Alastor started showing his deep and true emotions.

"I have loved you in life and beyond"

*sigh*  Who doesn't dream of that kind of everlasting devotion?  I can tell you one thing, Alastor may have been dead for a century, but that man has some lines and moves that could make the toughest of girls swoon.  I was Team Vampire, then Team Wolf...this novel could nudge me to Team Ghost!

And speaking of ghosts... I was very nervous about this book when I received it for review.  How could a modern girl fall in love with a century old ghost? How could he love her back?  Dana Michelle Burnett effortlessly makes this a seamless transition.  There were times I could actually forget Alastor was a ghost.  But then those simple reminders would pop up, and you wonder "How is this going to work???"  I had to stay up late reading, I couldn't put the book down - I had to know.

This book went by entirely too fast for me, I want it to go on and on.  The writing is beautiful, the scenery is gorgeous.  The emotions in the book... they are heartfelt and sometimes just heart wrenching.  They are strong.  And they will leave you hungry for the next book, I'm sure of that.
