"Where the feck am I again?"
Looking at him, Carly shook her head. "Are you going to become one of those pathetic, burnt out, brain-fried bastards who need index cards wherever you go so you know what city you're in?"

He interrupted her and in an uninterested tone explained, "Love, I always needed index cards to tell me what city I was in."

She sighed in exasperation but continued, "We're still in Philly in a private VIP lounge at the airport waiting on a flight to JFK. In New York. You have a concert in two nights, remember?"

"Far out," Brogan mumbled in annoyance.

"Guess I'll have to introduce myself again. Carly Montgomery. I'm your new manager. Byron quit last night. I suppose you don't remember that, either."

"No. I really don't remember. The show went well, I suppose."

"Yes, the concert went fine. What happened after the show caused the concern. You all but trashed the dressing room at the Spectrum. Your mess is going to cost a pretty penny, Nigel is not impressed."

"Carly? How original. Copy Carly Simon, did you?"

He watched as her jaw set in annoyance. "I don't copy anybody. My name is Cara, but my family has called me Carly since I could crawl — and why am I explaining this to you?"

Brogan blinked and had a good look at this infuriating-as-shite woman. She was no more than 5'3”, her hair was long and wavy, dyed some two-tone shade of black with bright red streaks throughout. She wore a skintight black leather skirt and sexy four-inch black pumps. A tight gold tiger-patterned sweater hugged her feminine curves. Under the six layers of makeup he supposed she was attractive enough, no raving beauty but adequate. Her voice, however, sounded like nails on a chalkboard.

"I don't have to stay here. You can't keep me. I'll find my own feckin' way to New York —"

Carly whistled shrilly through her teeth. The door to the private lounge swung open. A man as big as a Volkswagen with a human head on it stood before Brogan with his legs apart and tree trunk-sized arms crossed defiantly.

Carly's laugh sounded smug and amused, which pissed him off further. "This is Giovanni. Gio gave you the cold shower, remember?"

He interjected again, this time more sarcastically, "Love, it's not the first cold shower I ever had."

"Regardless, he'll be your shadow going forward. Gio will keep you in line. Make sure you're a good boy and behave at the venues in future."

"I need a drink." Brogan snarled.

Carly inclined her head toward the counter. "There is fresh coffee in the pot, and some donuts in the box. That's all you're getting for now."

Jaysus Christ. He clasped his hands together to keep them from shaking. He did need a drink — badly. Times like this, he wished he smoked. He could use a fag right now. He was sober for the first time in days. Well, he would try to stay somewhat lucid for the show itself. But after the concert was over he would put aside the few restraints. Stalking the stage and whipping the crowd into a wild froth wasn't enough for him. He always needed more. His irritated gaze roamed over the huge man in front of him. Great. His own gorilla."Listen to me, Byrne. I've been around enough rockers these last three years to see the signs. Your own band can't stand you. They went to Nigel. They will be around you only for prerequisite rehearsals and the show itself. The rest of the time? They don't want to know you. They demanded separate travel and different hotels, though I can't see that happening. You're arrogant even to your own family and to your girlfriend," Carly hesitated. "You don't remember a thing, do you?"

Brogan Byrne didn't know why he acted this way and didn't know how to stop. This monster lived inside him, and it had resided there for a long time. The demon was a voracious beast. Even now it clamored and groaned. The beast wanted to be fed. The only thing quieting the fiend was drugs and sex. He needed some type of hit. He glanced over at Gio. If Tiny wasn't here he could put the moves on this Carly. Jaysus, where did that come from?
Next, check out the soundtrack right here!  All of these songs are the songs mentioned in the book!  Then afterwards, fill out the Rafflecopter and comment (there's a question in the rafflecopter!) for your chance to win a copy of HEART OF ROCK!

Character Interview/Giveaway - Jack and Djinn by Amber Sweetapple

Jack and Djinn

Amber Sweetapple

Miriam's life is a hot mess. Her boyfriend Ben is no longer the man she fell in love with, and he won't stop knocking her around. And Jack? He's kind, handsome, and sweet: everything she could ever want and more. As her passion for Jack ignites, so does the rest of her body...

Amber Sweetapple: Hi, Mr. Byrne. I'm so glad you could join us today. I was wondering if you could start off by telling us a bit about how you met your wife, Jack's grandmother. It sounds like you've had a pretty romantic life.

Sean Byrne: Och, call me Sean. You'd like to know about how I met Gracie? It is quite a romantic story, if I do say so m'self. It goes back to just after the war--that'd be the Second World War, just so we're clear. I'd spent the war shovin' shells up the arse-end of an ack-ack. That's those anti-aircraft cannons you know. I was stationed in Dunkirk, and I spent just about all the war there. Wasn't too bad, really. Got to knock some of those bastard Krauts out of the sky, I did. I s'pose I shouldn't say that now, though, should I? It ain't...whatcha call it...politically proper or what have you.

Anyway. I met my darlin' Gracie on the ferry to Dublin. She was the prettiest lass I'd seen in four years, and believe me, I'd seen plenty. Ahem, but that's a different story, and not one I'd think is proper, if you take my meanin'. She had the longest, blondest hair I ever did see. It was...oh lord, it was like sunlight spun into gold and braided down her back. It shone and gleamed, and it fairly begged me to touch it. So I did, and got a good whack across the jaw for my troubles. More than a whack, if you'd like the truth. She was aboard the ferry with a right ugly bastard, a bloke named Hamish. He was a Scot, and had a terrible accent. Couldn't understand one word in five the man said, and this is comin' from an Irishman with a fairly thick brogue m'self. Well, ugly old Hamish--and lord, he was ugly, had a face like a bulldog and the temper'ment to suit--he didn't take too well to me havin' a touch of his girl's hair. He reached around and walloped me a good one.

"Dinna be toochin' my garl" he said. And of course, not understandin' a damn word he'd said, I thought it best it give him like for like. Of course, if he'd known he was fixin' to tangle with Sean Byrne, I'm fairly sure he'd've kept his grubby paw to his self. But he didn't and so we went a few rounds all up and down the ferry. I think we might've scared a few people along the train, what with the flyin' punches and all.

Well, needless to say, old Hamish couldn't chew what he'd bitten off, which is to say, I threw the mug straight off the ferry. Oh, don't look so horrified, it wasn't like we was goin' fast, was we? He could swim, and we wasn't more than half a mile off shore. I'm sure he was fine.

Of course, it took me the rest of the trip to Dublin to get Gracie to so much as look at me, and when I did manage that much, the look came with a nice ringin' slap across the face. I'd've lost her then, except I knew she was in love with me. I just had to convince her of that fact. I spent the rest of that summer doin' just that. I courted her, helped her father around the farm, cut peat--if you don't know what cuttin' peat is, you should know it's the most dreadful hard work a man can do--and I took her for nights on the town. Eventually, she came to see things my way, and we was married in a little white church in Tipperary. I dunno why Tipperary, except that's what Gracie wanted. I didn't have no family of my own, so it was just her folks and my best mate from Dunkirk, a lad named John, who's been dead these twenty years, God rest him.

AS: When did you first know you had the "The Sight"?

SB: I knew I had The Sight from the time I was five years old, or nigh about that. I learned of it from my mum, God rest her. She had The Sight, as did my grandmum and her mum, all the way back to time out of mind. We've always had The Sight, only I was the first male in our family to have it.

AS: What's your favorite Irish beer?

SB:Oh, we're talkin' booze now? If it's beer we're drinkin' I'll have a Smithwicks, which ain't pronounced "Smith-wicks" by the way. It's properly said "Smitticks". But I'm a whiskey man, for the most part, and I don't ever drink nothin' but Jameson. Ain't no other whiskey for my money.

AS: Have you and Jack gotten into any trouble lately?

SB: Trouble? Me? Certainly not. Although there was that little incident in the grocery store. Jackie is always tellin' me to keep my seeings to my self, you know, and I do, most of the time. Only this one I just couldn't keep in. There was this sassy little girl, pretty as you please and carryin' a babe in her arms and another runnin' crazy through the store. I happened to bump into her, by accident-like--and don't you be thinkin' it was anythin' but an accident, however lovely she may been--and I happened to get a Sight. Her husband was steppin' out on her, you see, and she didn't have a clue. He was fixin' to steal their savin's and pull a runner on the poor lass, and I just couldn't let it pass. So, I tell her what I seen. How was I s'posed to know her husband was in the store with her? He gets lippy with me, and I teach him a lesson with my good left hand, and that led to Jack steppin' in, and of course the coppers got called in and...well...we had to do our shoppin' elsewhere.

AS: Read any good books, lately?

SB: Well, now. My Jackie, he got me one o'them electronic readin' machines, a Kindle, for the last Christmas, and he's been showin' me how to buy the electronic books on it. The last book I read on it was Aurora by Ryk Brown.

AS: I hear you make an appearance in Djinn and Tonic which releases this week. Will you be in Djinn and Juice as well?

SB: I do indeed make a brief appearance in Djinn and Tonic, as does my Jackie. As for the next book? Well, you'll have to find out for yourself won't you,? You never know what could happen.

AS:Thank you very much for your time, Mr. Byrne.

SB: Oh, the pleasure is mine, to be sure. And I told you, call me Sean.

To maintain peace with the vampires, Eva Maldonado is offered as a sacrifice to the crazed vampire king by her father, the alpha of the Silveria Shifter Pack. Hadrian’s reputation is both legendary and lethal; he is ruthless, bloodthirsty, lusty, and soulless. When Eva arrives at the ancient fortress high in the Carpathian Mountains, she is shocked to find a ravaged man with dark burning eyes filled with loneliness and dangerous desire.

Review, Simmer by Kaitlyn Davis for Tribute Books

Title: Simmer (Midnight Fire #2)
Author: Kaitlyn Davis
Published: April 2012
Format: Ebook provided by Tribute Books for review

"Slowly, like a whisper almost blown away in the wind, two words streaked across her mind: 'Kiss me.'"

Kira may have survived the eclipse, but her troubles are far from over. She's headed to Sonnyville with one goal in mind: to learn more about her parents. But with Luke and Tristan competing for her heart and Diana gunning for her head, time is running out on the search for her mother. And the closer Kira gets to answers, the more terrified she becomes. The conduits fear her, the vampires fear her, and Kira is starting to wonder if maybe they're right...

Simmer is book 2 in the Midnight Fire series.  You can check out my review for the first book, Ignite, below or click HERE.

Simmer starts with Kira packing for “conduit boot camp” as she calls it, a few months after Ignite ends.  Luke and Kira are going to Sonnyville for a couple months.  Of course, Tristan can’t go.  I mean, it is a whole town of vampire killers.  So instead Tristan is going to hunt down Diana.  Right away I am saddened by Kira and Tristan’s goodbye.  I just don’t want them to be apart.  When you get a couple you really like, you want them to be together.  And besides, at this point, I’m not entirely sure I want her to be alone with Luke for a variety of reasons.  It’s not that I don’t trust him, because I do.  But as much as Kira has, I’ve invested myself in Tristan and I don’t want anyone messing with that.

“If there was anything her new, slightly insane, life taught her, it was sleep whenever you got the chance because you never know when a vampire was going to come along and try to flip your car over”

I am really digging this series.  There are more secrets than you can shake a stick at, and lots of drama and love triangles to keep you busy and entertained.  There are more battle scenes in this book than the first, and I thought they were awesome.  I love action scenes!

Tristan is still mischievous and broody as in the first book, and I love him even more for it.  And the devotion between Kira and Tristan is exactly what I want to see in a romance such as theirs (hello?!  Opposites attract, them against the world!)

There are a lot of plot twists in this book as Kira is determined to find out more about a certain someone (I am keeping their identity a secret since I’m also posting the review for the first book today also).  I really love how determined Kira is.  And as she discovers exactly how powerful she is (hint: super duper powerful) I love how she manages to roll with it.  She isn’t running from what she is, she is embracing it.  And she’s got her two best guys by her side, even if they are sworn mortal (immortal?) enemies. This trio is near perfect, even for the flaws and fights.

I definitely think you should give this series a try.  Like I said in my previous review, it really takes a unique spin on all the vampire stuff.  And Kira’s sun-channeling power is pretty darn cool, and I can’t wait to see what other powers she develops.

"With one last look, one final search of the lines of his face for some sign, Kira turned and ran away from the sound of the man she loved laughing in the face of her death."

When Kira Dawson moves to South Carolina, she meets Luke, a blond goofball who quickly becomes her best friend, and Tristan, a mysterious bad boy who sends shivers down her spine. Kira knows they're keeping secrets, but when she discovers Tristan's lust for blood and her own dormant mystical powers, Kira is forced to fight for her life and make the heartbreaking decision between the familiar comfort of friendship and the fiery passion of love.

I absolutely loved this story.  Kira is the new girl at school.  She is kind of a foodie, cooking for her family gives her an escape and a way to touch base with herself.  She has dreams of going to culinary school – right after she takes a year off after graduation.  She has curly red hair, sometimes described as strawberry blonde, and some unusual eyes.  Right away at school she meets Luke, classic boy next door, All American type guy.  They become fast friends, and he introduces her to the rest of his group.
But Kira soon discovers she’s garnered the attention of another group of kids at school, and they are… well, dark.  Meet Diana, John, Jerome and Tristan.  They seem oddly interested in her, always seemingly staring at her.  Especially that Tristan.

Enter Tristan.  Broody, ice blue eyes, black hair, pale, built.  Oh yeah, I instantly love Tristan.  No mistake about it.  The guy has charisma and mystery and you want to get to know him better.  And so does Kira.  She finds herself performing surf stunts that are way out of her league in fact, just to pretend that she is not affected by him.  But she is.  Everyone is!  How can you not be!?!?

Then Kira’s life is threatened and the truth comes out about who, no, what she is.  She is a conduit.  Basically it means that she can channel the sun.  Well, why would someone want to do that?  To kill vampires, of course!  (Disclaimer: The author of this blog, Liz, does not in any way endorse the killing of vampires)  And here’s the rub, her new boyfriend – Tristan – just happens to be a vampire!! Yikes, talk about relationship drama.  Luckily she has Luke there to help her through it. But let’s not leave Luke out in the cold, the classic boy next door also happens to be a conduit!  Soon Kira learns that she is a hybrid of sorts, and her very existence could mean the end of the world!

Ok, those are the facts.  Now lets go with the feelings.  I really liked this story!!  It had a very different spin on the vampire slayer twist.  And not all conduits want to kill vampires, some want to protect them. This little secret society that has been around forever is very interesting and fresh.

Ok ladies, let me get back to the real meat of it.  Tristan.  Holy moody hot guy, he is wonderful.  Sure, he’s over a century old, but you can’t hold that against him.  I love how he always appears from nowhere, and I am definitely “Team Tristan”.  He is deep and sensitive, and he has this never bottoming love for Kira.  He’s everything I look for in a YA Vampire Heart-throb.  Even if their relationship is ultimately doomed I am rooting for them every step of the way.

But then we have something really dangerous approaching – an eclipse; the one time when conduits are unable to channel the sun.  And someone has Kira on their list.  The characters are well developed and I easily became attached to some and afraid of others. I found the action in this book to be awesome and scary.  The enemies are formidable and not easy targets.  This book was a real page turner, and I couldn’t wait to keep reading onto book 2, Simmer, which I have a review for up next.  So scroll up and check it out!  This series really has potential to become a fantastic series, and I can’t wait to see how it all pans out.

Review, Black Satin by Rae Hachton for Supagurl Book Tours

Title: Black Satin (Pretty in Black #2)
Author: Rae Hachton
Published: May 2012 Teen Pulse
Format: Ebook provided by Supagurl Tours for review

What if you weren’t who you thought you were?
What if your whole life changed in an instant and you were released to a new identity?
What if you were forced to kill the one you love?
What if everything you knew wasn’t real, and you awaken to a new world?
What if love could take you to unknown places? How beautiful is death really?

Marcus Marble has disappeared from Ellie’s life, and she needs answers to questions and he’s the only one who can answer them. How is her sister back from the dead, and why is Ellie still alive? When Ellie realizes Marcus isn’t coming back, she is forced to move on with her life the best way she can, in hopes of finding the answers herself, but when people at school begin to be viciously murdered, and Giles reveals to her a life changing secret, she decides to investigate the possible truth of it. What she discovers is more than she thought she would. The only time Ellie feels normal is when she’s around Walter, the new guy at school. And normal is how she wants to feel, now that Marcus is gone from her life. But Walter may not be all that he seems, either, and she just might spiral in to an even more dark world, she never thought possible. And when it occurs to her that Marcus has made the decision to pass on through to the afterlife, during the Risorgimento, she races against time to stop him, while knowing she has feelings for Walter, too.

Will she make it in time to stop Marcus from passing through, and if she does, what will she tell Walter? Her heart will have to make the final decision. But will the choice be worth dying for?

Black Satin tour, here it is!  So here I am, listening to some Cocteau Twins to set the mood, and I’m just going to type it out.  And in many ways, it fits the Cocteau Twins’ music.  It was dreamy, it flowed well, and it transported you to another place.   HERE is my review of Pretty in Black.

Black Satin is the sequel to Pretty In Black.  The beginning kind of reviews some of the first book, which I appreciated.  Not so much because I needed the refresher, I read them back to back.  But I appreciated it because I really loved the style Rae Hachton writes with.  In fact, Black Satin even jumps a little bit ahead of Pretty in Black to give you some more background on Marcus.

“Being with Ellie is like having a constant adrenaline rush shoot through me, electrifying my spirit.”

In the beginning of this story I felt like the detail was more finely tuned than in its predecessor.   But that is also partly because of the review from the first book, except from a different POV.   We learn about Marcus and how he and Michael are in a challenge to become Prince of Nevermore when Zarfe retires.  Kind of like a “Let the best man win” type of situation, and we get a bit more history about Jillian and Walter.  And the Jillian/Walter/Marcus triangle.  And then that morphs into a Walter/Ellie/Marcus triangle.  Except that it doesn’t, not for Ellie.
Ellie is unwavering in her love for Marcus, and that’s what I loved.  She wants to be with him.  Sure, there are moments where she thinks, hey, maybe I can be with this other guy.  But she knows she is fooling herself.  Marcus has her heart in a vice grip, and if he walks into the everafter, she may as well pass on too.

The cons:  I don’t like the whole Nevermore Slayer aspect.  As in book one, I felt that it’s been done, and that it wasn’t really needed to tell the story.  The Pros:  Gargoyles!!  Yep!  This book has gargoyles!  I’ve not read any books really with gargoyles, so this was a very special treat.  This book will have you going through time and space, and it does get a bit steampunk in certain areas, which was totally unexpected.  I’ve never finished a steampunk book and liked it, but this was pretty alright.  Really, with gargoyles, vampires, and many love triangles, the steampunk barely phased me.

All in all I definitely give this book a thumbs up.  It was dramatic and unique.  I’ve honestly never read anything like it.  The author really has a beautiful style with words, and that beauty more than makes up for where the storyline stumbles a bit.

Excerpt/Giveaway - Halo Of The Damned by Dina Rae

Hey, welcome to my stop on the Halo of the Damned Tour!  Be sure to check out the excerpt, then enter the giveaway at the end!  Thanks for stopping by!

A chain of advertising agencies, a new breed of humans, and a fallen angel to worship... Andel Talistokov is known for his slick advertising agencies across the globe. He is a fallen angel that uses advertising as a weapon for Satan's work. His growing power emboldens him to break several of Hell's Commandments. Furious with his arrogance, Satan commands him to return to Hell after finding his own replacement. Yezidism, an ancient angel worshiping religion, quietly expands throughout the West. Armaros appears as a guest of honor during their ceremonies. He mates with young women to produce nephilim, a mixed race of humans and angels. They are alone and unprepared for their supernatural power. Joanna Easterhouse, a recovering drug addict, steps out of prison shortly after her mother's fatal accident. She and her sister, Kim, unravel their mother's secretive past. Intrigued, they learn their bloodline is part of a celestial legacy. Both worlds collide. Halo of the Damned is a horrifying tale that weaves research together with suspenseful twists and turns.

EXCERPT ONE
As Andel waited for his servant and slave, Marcus, to come and
clean up his sinister mess, he noticed blood all over his Armani
suit. He licked the sides of his face, still savoring the taste. The
Turkish rug that lay under his daughter’s corpse was also ruined.
Unlike the suit, the rug was irreplaceable. He remembered when
an Iman had given it to him hundreds of years ago. It was priceless,
and now he had to part with it.
He looked at the decapitated, beautiful head one last time and
remembered what a true bitch she turned out to be.
His intercom buzzed. “Come into my office,” he hissed, as he
remotely let Marcus inside.
“You called, Master?” he obediently asked, as he stepped into
his office, looking at the floor. He zeroed in on the remnants of
the cadaver. Pieces of flesh, bone, and organs were chewed up
and stringy. This was not the first time he had cleaned up Andel’s
mess.
“May I ask what she did that brought your wrath upon her?”
“I’m downsizing,” Andel smirked.

EXCERPT TWO
The scroll’s seal matched the box’s lining. The color was foreign
to Joanna, Kim, and Maria, but they agreed that indigo was
the closest it came to any of the colors on the spectrum. The scroll
was much thicker and softer than paper.
“This must be some kind of animal skin,” remarked Joanna.
The last item in the box was a piece of curved metal. The edges
along its outer rim were ridged in an elaborate pattern. It looked
like a cracked piece of a charger that once was part of an elegant
set of china. Joanna tried to pick it up, but was mildly shocked.
The electric charge did not stop her from trying to hold it. She
picked it up a few more times. Once neutralized, she held it to the
light in the room.
“This looks like a piece of scrap metal. Obviously, it had major
importance or Mom wouldn’t have gone to such measures in
hiding it. It’s not gold, silver, or even platinum. But it’s shiny, like
tin. It’s almost weightless. I thought it would be much heavier,”
Joanna analyzed after carefully studying it.
“It’s Grandma’s. I’ve seen her wear it in my dreams. There’s
another piece that matches it and makes a circle. She puts it in the
back of her head and it glows. She must have hid the other piece,”
Maria said.

Staring into the glowing red eyes of the vampire, Chloe freezes, forgetting all her training. After the vampire is vanquished by her friend and mentor, Drew, Chloe resolves to train harder, to be the best, and to kill the vampire who had her mother killed. Finally mourning her mother, Chloe allows her revenge to drive her, accepting that her life will never be normal.

 Part Three

In the third installment of The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter, Chloe Kallistrate's first Christmas without her mother is difficult. As part of the grieving process she visits her mother’s grave for the first time and there, she is visited by Sostrate, the immortal demi-god from whom she is descended.

As she comes of age, Chloe is changing and developing the gifts unique to her heritage. She discovers a new power she must learn to use and control, as if being a teenager wasn't difficult enough. During this emotionally chaotic time in her life, the community is attacked, her grandfather injured and hunters are killed. After almost losing her only remaining family, Chloe questions whether her continued presence in the community will sacrifice everyone she has come to care about.

 Part Four

In the fourth installment of The Vampire Hunter’s Daughter, Chloe and the other vampire hunters are suffering the aftermath of the vampire attack on their community. Many hunters were injured, and loved ones were murdered. More than that, there is a loss of security and peace since the hunters' safe haven was breached and invaded. Chloe and Drew struggle just to get along and understand each other without Luke there to guide them.

During this period of uncertainty, Chloe and Drew both try to live a normal life as teenagers by going to the New Year's bash, she with Gavin and Drew with Christina, Chloe's recent rival. Chloe is, once again, reminded that nothing is 'normal' in her life any more, when she begin to show signs she's developing supernatural gifts from her father's bloodline, too.

The bash does little to lift her feelings of guilt and responsibility for the attack on the community, because she knows it's her presence there that caused the vampires to attack the hunters. This attack nearly took the life of her only remaining family member from her mother's side. She doesn't want to put anyone else she loves at risk.

Before she has time to put any plans into action, a surprise phone call from someone unexpected sets the wheels in motion. Chloe now knows what she must do...
