Review: Believe by Erin McCarthy

Title: Believe
Series: True Believers #3
Author: Erin McCarthy
Published: January 21, 2014 - Penguin
Format: Galley from NetGalley - Thank you Penguin!

Robin used to be a party girl… until she got black out drunk and woke up in bed with her best friend's boyfriend. Now she's faced with being THAT girl, and couldn't be more disgusted with herself. She can't even tell her friends the reason for her sudden sobriety and she avoids everyone until she meets Phoenix—quiet, tattooed, and different in every way that's good and oh, so bad…

Phoenix is two days out of jail when he meets Robin at his cousin's house, and he knows that he has no business talking to her, but he's drawn to her quiet demeanor, sweet smile, and artistic talent. She doesn't care that he's done time, or that he only has five bucks to his name, and she supports his goal to be a tattoo artist.

But Phoenix knows Robin has a secret, and that it's a naïve dream to believe that his record won't catch up with them at some point. Though neither is prepared for the explosive result when the past collides with the present…

So I recently read Believe by Erin McCarthy, and I loved it. I mean, how could I not? This series seriously kicks ass. Believe has a completely different feel, and I was hooked and read the book as fast as I could.

Review & Interview: Chance On Love by Vristen Pierce

Title: Chance On Love
Series: No
Author: Vristen Pierce
Published: January 2014
Format: Ebook received for review

Foul-mouthed curmudgeon Stephanie Love has one bright spot in her life and it definitely has nothing to do with romance. Being cheated on by her wealthy louse of a boyfriend, and making a (mostly unintentional) attempt at homicide, are the least of her worries. She's on the fast track to becoming News Director--until a corporation buys out the station she works for, that is.

Charming, gorgeous, and arrogant, Chance Valentine has little patience for Stephanie's smart mouth and her crass, overly outspoken personality. Nothing overshadows the immediate dislike they take to one another--except the intense sexual chemistry they share. When he not only refuses to give Stephanie her promotion, but gives the gig to her adversary, Stephanie's had enough. While she's busy making plans to use him to get what she wants, he has a strategy of his own. He'll make the grumpy temptress fall in love, and then he'll break her heart. It doesn't take him long, however, to realize he's met his match.

Through a series of steamy encounters, they quickly discover that even the best revenge
schemes can go off course...and lead straight to love.

Ha!  Chance On Love was an awesome read.  This was my first by author Vristen Pierce, but I will definitely be looking for more of her books.  I found this book to be funny, sexy, rough, intelligent, and just hot.

Review: 100 Days in Deadland by Rachel Aukes

Title: 100 Days In Deadland
Series: Deadland #1
Author: Rachel Aukes
Published: August 1st 2013 by Surprisingly Adequate Publishing
Format: ebook provided for review

A Journey Through Dante's Inferno with a Shambling Twist...

The world ended on a Thursday.

In one day, the world succumbed to a pestilence that decimated the living. In its place rose a new species: vicious, gruesome, wandering monsters with an insatiable hunger for the living. There is no government, no shelter.

Still in her twenties, Cash has watched her friends die, only to walk again. An office worker with few survival skills, she joins up with Clutch, a grizzled Army veteran with PTSD. Together, they flee the city and struggle through the nine circles of hell, with nothing but Clutch’s military experience and Cash’s determination to live. As they fight to survive in the zombie inferno, they quickly discover that nowhere is safe from the undead… or the living.

This is the beginning after the end.

(100 Days in Deadland is a modern remake of Dante's Inferno, the classic tale on the horrors of hell... zombie apocalypse style!)

I’ve read a lot of zombie books. I love them. What continually surprises me is how they are all so different. You’d think they’d end up the same, but nope – there are countless ways for these stories to go. Rachel Aukes really ups the ante with 100 Days in Deadland.

To make matters worse, after Maggie catches Bethany and Robert in a compromising position, she’s even more determined to solve the case before the other contestants can. But when Andrew calls, asking to see Maggie one more time so he can come clean, he might be too hard to resist…

This series is really getting interesting – but it’s really hard to review just one installment at a time, so today I bring you parts three and four. It’s really starting to heat up – in all senses of the word.

Review: How Zombies Stole Christmas by Sidney Bristol

Title: How Zombies Stole Christmas
Series: No
Author: Sidney Bristol
Published: Dec 5, 2013 Taliesin Publishing
Format: Ebook provided for review

Every creature in Haven snuggled down in their beds, ready for another Christmas, they liked it a lot. But not everyone in this magical land shares their holiday cheer. . .

Evelina Frost is a woman used to staying in the shadows, but this year Christmas needs a hero, and with Santa away, it’s up to her to save the holiday from ruin.

A figure dressed in white cast a spell and from the frozen land, ghastly zombies appear.

Kameron is a creature out-of-place in the frigid land, but he’s carved out a life, away from his Highland moors and pastures, happy to live alone. Until a woman barges into his life, and awakens urges he hasn’t known in centuries.

“I’ll take their Christmas, their cheer and their hope,” the figure says, as zombies descend on the Snow Palace, ripping the trees and presents from the hearth.

Together, Evelina and Kameron delve into the history of their land, fighting a magical blizzard, ice zombies and an all-consuming lust for each other as magic seeks to create another fairy tale from their lives. They must fight together against the odds and save Christmas, though they might lose their hearts in the bargain.

What a crazy and fun and interesting book this was! I suppose I should have gotten the review out a bit earlier, but as it goes with the holidays, time just went too fast. But once I got the chance to read this book I went through it like a blow torch through ice!

The World Without A Future by Nazarea Andrews (Review & Giveaway)

Title: The World Without A Future
Series: it looks like it could be one....
Author: Nazarea Andrews
Published: Dec 3, 2013 - A&A Literay
Format: Ebook provided for review

She was born the day the world ended…

Nurrin has lived her entire life with zombies—trapped behind walls meant to keep them safe. She’s mostly happy there. But when a zombie horde breach the walls of her Haven, she has to trust her brother, Collin, and his best friend to keep her alive.

He just wants his past to die…

Finn O’Malley has given up on voicing warnings that are ignored. No one cares that the zombies are changing. Now all that matters is keeping Collin and Nurrin safe from what’s outside the walls of a Haven. But when Nurrin’s best friend picks up a contact infection, he agrees to get the medicine needed to save his life. Forced together, relying on each other in a strange Haven, zombies aren’t the most dangerous thing they’re facing.

In their world, only one thing remains true: everything ends in blood.

I don’t even know what category to put this book in; it would fit so well in several. Zombie, dystopia, new adult, romance… it’s got it all. The World Without A Future has raced onto my favorites list (which includes a five star rating) and has me clamoring for the next book (which I’ve heard there will be one, but that’s all I’m saying!)

Review: Kissed By A Dark Prince by Felicity Heaton

Title: Kissed By A Dark Prince
Series: Eternal Mates #1
Author: Felicity Heaton
Published: Nov 30, 2013
Format: Ebook received for review

Olivia thinks it’s her lucky night when a dangerously handsome unconscious fae ends up on her inspection table. He’s her chance to redeem herself with her employer, the demon-hunting organisation, Archangel. But when the tall, dark and deadly immortal warrior awakes, she gets much more than she bargained for…

Attacked by his enemy in the elf kingdom, the last thing Prince Loren expects when he comes around is a beautiful angel watching over him and medical technology of the mortal realm. Hazy from his injuries, all he can focus on is the pulse ticking in her throat and the sweet allure of her blood.

One single bite reveals she is his eternal mate, triggering a bond between them that will leave him weakened until it is complete… or broken, and pulling Olivia into the crossfire of his ancient feud.

To protect his people and his mate from the machinations of a madman, Loren must risk everything by working with Olivia at Archangel to find a way to break the bond blossoming between them.

But will Loren be strong enough to place duty before desire and give up the one thing he has waited millennia for and craves above all others—his eternal mate? And will Olivia be able to resist the incredible heat that burns between them and the temptation of her dark prince’s kiss?

With so many of Felicity Heaton’s books, I’ve hopped in during the middle of the series. So when this series, Eternal Mates, came along, I jumped on board. And now, I am so glad I did. This book packed a lot in during a couple hundred pages, that’s for sure.

We start with Olivia, the heroine. She’s a scientist for Archangel, a group that does a variety of things with the paranormal beings in the world. Olivia’s part is studying them. I really enjoyed Olivia’s character. I found her to be caring and sympathetic, generous and a person I would want to be my own friend. She’s had some issues in the past with demons and such, and that totally led her to her present. And when circumstances collide, she finds a super hot and sexy man on her table. This man turns out to be Loren.

Loren, we find out, is an elven prince, and he’s over 50 centuries old. I really loved Loren. Let me say this again, I really loved him! He’s got magical abilities, which include masking his true looks, transporting anything he owns from and to anywhere, and a myriad of other things. Pointy ears, fangs, and naked under his armor – this is not a man to be messed with. And then when he bites Olivia, and he realizes she is his ki’ara (true fated mate) all bets are off. Both of them pretend to themselves (and each other) that they are going to find a way to break the bond, but come on – you don’t mess with fate.

In this book we meet several other awesome characters too; Sable, who is a hunter at Archangel, Bleu, Loren’s right hand man and friend, Vail, Loren’s evil brother, and a few others. If you’ve read Felicity’s books before, you know she has a real talent for making the secondary characters all shine, and giving you a chance to get to know them. Personally, I am very interested in Bleu. I think there is a lot going on there, and I definitely want to get to the bottom of it.

Kissed By A Dark Prince has tons of action in it. We are talking bombs, fight scenes, bar brawls, kidnappings… oh, and some mega watt sex that made me want to reread a few pages just for pure fun! Everything is this book is hard hitting and qualifies it as a page turner.

Her feet tightened against his backside, a silent plea for more, and he clutched her hops, dragged her to the edge of the black-rubber-topped table and pumped her harder, thrusting as deep as he could go. She tipped her head back, causing the soft waves of her chestnut hair to spill around her shoulders, a beautifully wanton and wild look in her rich brown eyes. Loren growled and took her harder, driven by a need to claim all of her. He grunted with each thrust, each meeting of their hips, lost in how warm and wet she was, tightly gloving him and driving him crazy with a need for more.

Yeah, there’s some sex in this book. And yeah, it’s freaking fantastic. You know when you pick up a book of Felicity’s there will be some scorching heated scenes, and Kissed By A Dark Prince does not disappoint at all.

This book has a lot to offer. Demons, elves, shifters, humans, hunters, scientists, good guys, bad guys, and centuries worth of war among brothers. I definitely recommend this book to all of you!

Review - The Inheritance - Part Two by Olivia Mayfield

Title: The Inheritance
Series: Part Two
Author: Olivia Mayfield

As The Inheritance continues, Maggie realizes that when it comes to her grandfather’s will, no one can be trusted. No matter how tempting their offers are…

The Inheritance, Part II
The Witness

Maggie is wary of the other contestants in her grandfather’s game; even her own brother is acting too strange to be relied on. But after a surprisingly sincere conversation with Andrew about their past, Maggie agrees to his offer to team up in the search for the truth about Cassandra. It’s better to keep him close and find out if he’s as honest as he seems. Plus, maybe time in close quarters will force her to let go of her troublesome crush on him.

But when Maggie gets a call from Cassandra’s old high school friend, who claims to have information about the disappearance that he doesn’t want to share with the others, she decides to keep her rendezvous with him a secret—even from her newfound partner…

I am so glad I’ve been able to pick up this serial series to read! I’ve just finished the second installment of The Inheritance, and already the mystery is shaping up to be something amazing.

In this installment Maggie is still trying to track down what happened to her sister, Cassandra, who went missing years ago. Is she missing or is she dead? No one knows what happened. But now, Maggie’s grandfather has passed away, and he left a bit of a challenge in his will. The first person out of a certain group of people to discover the truth will inherit his entire estate.

Let me tell you – Olivia Mayfield has done a great job with this book. I don’t know who to trust, and I keep changing my suspicions based on different motivations. And now, at the end of book one, someone broke into Maggie’s house and stole her notes on the case.

The book takes place in a small town where everyone knows everyone, and everyone is in everyone’s business – and it completely adds to the whole feel of the story. Everyone knew Cassandra, and the news of her disappearance spread like a wildfire.

I don’t really want to voice my suspicions here, and ruin or lead you in what could possibly even be a wrong direction. But there are several people I really don’t like! But conversely, there are a couple people that I am really warming up to, and I hope they are the “good guys”. Add on top of that that Maggie is having creepy as hell dreams about her sister. Do they hold a clue that her conscious brain isn’t seeing? And then something else happens in this book – another crime! A major crime!!

I can’t wait to get on to book 3 and get to the bottom of this. There are 6 parts altogether, so while I’m still a ways from the end, I’m getting closer!

Review: Sweet Revenge by Rebecca Zanetti

Title: Sweet Revenge
Series: Sins Brothers, #2
Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Published: December 3, Forever (Grand Central)
Format: Galley (NetGalley) Thank you Grand Central!

The One Man She Can't Have

Matt Dean was born to fight…and kill. A member of a secret black-ops military unit, he and his brothers were genetically engineered by the government to be the perfect soldiers with an expiration date. Now, with time running out, he's gone rogue in a relentless quest for the one person who can save them. His mission leads him to Charmed, Idaho…and to a beautiful woman with eyes like emeralds and a body made for pleasure.

The One Woman He Can't Resist

Laney Jacobs knows the mysterious, handsome stranger is trouble from the moment he walks into her bar, looking for a job. She's spent years running from her own past—the last thing she needs is a romantic entanglement. But Matt's strong arms offer her protection, and his gentle touch promises passion unlike anything she's ever known. As lethal forces surround them, revealing explosive secrets about Matt's past and putting everything—and everyone—he holds dear in danger, can he save them all before time runs out?

Whew. Ok. First – I want to send Rebecca Zanetti roses or something. I am so in love with this series I could do a cartwheel or a squeal, or something really cool lol. In the first book, Forgotten Sins, I was all about Shane. LOVED Shane. Still do. I loved everything about that book. It was mysterious and emotional and torturous – all things I love.

Sweet Revenge was pretty darn great. Like, if Forgotten Sins scored a 100 on my scale, then Sweet Revenge would be at like, 95. Sweet Revenge is all about Matt, the oldest of the gray brothers. Matt Dean. Holy hell on a stick, the man is something special. He’s fierce and loyal and has such a deep-rooted sense of loyalty to his brothers, you can’t help but love him.

But he’s in trouble. They all are. They have those pesky chips in them that will spell certain doom if they don’t get them out – like now. So Matt is on the search for a surgeon from the Commander’s team. And he think he has a lead on her in a small town named Charmed.

Charmed is small town Americana. Everyone knows everyone, and nearly everyone grew up there. It’s a nice place to live, and well, Matt thinks it’s a good place for the surgeon, Dr. Peters to hide out. And as luck would have it, right away Matter meets Laney, who runs the bar. Temporary cover as a bouncer and free room come with the job, it would seem everything is lining up for Matt.

Yeah. It would seem that way. Except then it all goes to Hell. Hell, it goes further than Hell, but I don’t know where that would be. But its that bad.

This story was fabulous in so many ways. It poured on the mystery and the drama. Excitement and tension were at all time high levels. Sexual chemistry and that spark we all crave in our favorite books were present and at the forefront.

As for Laney? I liked her. I seem to be lucky these days, finding a lot of heroines that I just really like. And Laney is definitely among them. She’s in Charmed building a new life for herself after an abusive boyfriend. She’s absolutely smart, and she is a woman in charge of her life. I really love that. But as the book goes on, you see how incredibly caring she is. She doesn’t just care for herself, or Matt, but she also takes care of nearly everyone she knows in some capacity. I love her capacity to just give of herself for the joy, safety, and well-being of others.

She arched against him and whispered his name.

The sound of her soft voice would stay with him. Through whatever the future held, he’d carry the moment. This woman should be savored, and there was no way he could keep her at arm’s length. She’d slid right into his heart, and instinct told him she’d always live there. For the short time he had left, she’d be with him. Even if he moved across the world from her.

This book has a lot of heart in it. This romance will leave you giggling, weeping, fearful, and hot. You want Matt and Laney to find happiness together. In Sweet Revenge there are definitely twists and turns. There are dead people. There are quite a few people who you know you just can’t quite trust, but you aren’t sure why just yet. You even get a few moments where you are on the edge of your seat.  But you have the ready and steady Matt there to guide you through the whole ordeal, so you know you are in good hands. In terms of romantic suspense, this book is top notch, and I would definitely say the Sins Brothers series is absolutely among my favorites.

Review: Soul Resurrected by Keri Lake (Plus a Scavenger Hunt!)

Title: Soul Resurrected
Series: Sons of Wrath, #2
Author: Keri Lake
Published: October 31, 2013
Format: Ebook received for review

As Wrath’s fiercest son, Logan carries the scars of fifty years spent in the most dreaded prison of the underworld, for a sin he’d kill to keep secret. Enduring decades of gruesome torture has left Logan feared by and detached from others, until a female Alexi’s blood resurrects his soul from death and, with it, the pleasures he’s been denied for so long.

Plagued by shame of her own, Calla is drawn to the ruthless demon, Logan, whose insatiable craving for her touch rouses buried passions and, for once, leaves her feeling desired.

A dark and dangerous evil has been reawakened, however, and when Calla is drawn too close to its breeding grounds, Logan vows to summon the violence of Wrath in order to keep her safe. First, though, Calla must save him from a past riddled with deceit and corruption … but only if she can accept the chilling consequences of unearthing his vilest skeleton.

Sons of Wrath
Never gamble with vengeance …

Sometimes I just love a really well written Urban Fantasy… Ok, well, who doesn’t, right? Keri Lake certainly delivers that with Soul Resurrected! I wasn’t able to get to Soul Avenged liked I had originally had planned, and I ended up jumping directly into Soul Resurrected. To be honest, I was lost. I couldn’t figure out who was who, and what they were doing and what was that thing again?? I was feeling very frustrated. But then, perhaps without me even realizing it, everything just clicked into place in my brain, and I was happily along for the ride.

Keri Lake is a local author to me, and this book takes place in the Detroit area. Granted, it’s not quite the Detroit I know… I mean, I only see beastly lycans around every few months, not every day. Err… um… anyway! It was really great seeing local places I know, it really enhanced the world building in my eyes. That’s just a little something extra, I think anyone feels when they read a book that takes place just around the corner.  Even if you are not from the area, you will definitely appreciate the world that Keri Lake has created for the Sons of Wrath.

Soul Resurrected certainly has some moving characters, too. Logan and Calla are the main characters. Logan, I’ll be honest, took a while for me to warm up to him. He was just so gruff, and a bit mean at times. But that’s just who he is! And once you peel the layers, and you see beyond all of that, you will find a man that you will certainly be pining for! And Calla, at first she seemed so shy and meek, she reminded me of a mouse. But the woman has strength and courage, and it wasn’t long before I really loved her character too. The supporting cast is really something else, too. You get to meet characters from Soul Avenged (or reconnect, if you’ve already read it!) and there are some new ones too. Some of them definitely got on my bad side and stayed there, while others proved themselves over and over to be show stealers!

The action in this book was top notch! If you really love Urban Fantasy, then you will love this book.  There was a ton of action and drama, fight scenes, hunting and such.  These are the type of things I really miss in a lot of PNR type books. Keri Lake definitely has a talent for weaving everything together in a perfect combination, and not making the more violent scenes feel out of place but rather like they belong there.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. I think I would have loved it a lot more if I had been able to get to the first one first, but after finishing this one, I will definitely be working my way backwards and then waiting on pins and needles for the next one, I’m sure!

When she isn’t toiling away on plots and protagonists, she enjoys reading, music and travel. If she could create mystical powers for herself, she’d have the ability to flash to anywhere in the world. And if she could flash to anywhere in the world at this very moment, she’d be staring at the ocean from her adirondack chair on the shores of North Carolina.

CHAPTER 1

Some lives just weren’t worth the trouble of saving …

The dark room swallowed Logan, as he lay sprawled on his bed—just as he’d been left after ditching his date with death. A stomach-turning sensation of thickened skin and tingles swathed his body, closing in on him, phantom sensations crawling over his flesh that kept him awake. Every five minutes or so, he willed an arm or a leg to move. No go.
Shadows danced across the wall on the occasions that one of the Catatones guarding the mansion passed through the floodlight below his window. He focused on them only because his neck had been propped in that direction and he had no choice. Good thing, though. She had been assigned to watch over him and slept somewhere beyond his periphery, the reminder heating his blood every time her sleepy moan drifted across the room.
The fury could’ve split him right down the middle.
Her blood ran through him—pumping in his veins, feeding his heart, keeping him alive.
Calla’s.
The woman who’d gotten him stabbed with Demortis, the only element capable of taking down a demon, now swam through his body as the only element capable of saving him. Her blood. Pure. Probably the closest he’d ever come to being righteous.
The irony was enough to leave him scratching his own eyeballs out of his head—that is, if he could reach the damn things. Like a bitch slap from the gods, who probably sat around drinking beers over the shit, poking fun at him.
The side effect of returning from the dead?
Feeling like the fucking dead.
Logan tightened his lip, wishing he could kick his own ass for being so stupid. Not like he’d hadto save her or anything. Hell, being a demon meant being the exception to human rules.
And being a son of Wrath meant never having to play by any species’ rules.
Yet for some reason, one lodged so deep inside his brain he couldn’t even begin to explain, he’d felt the need to intervene. Not so much for her sake, but because the little prick trying to rape her had taken a jab at the psychopath buried in Logan’s bones. Taunted him.
Then finally tripped his kill-switch.
Yeah, that’s what Logan told himself, anyway, because no other excuse could possibly justify why he couldn’t stir a single muscle in his body for anything having to do with her—Calla. The girl they’d picked up at some underground party, so high on Shine she’d have probably let every one of the brothers have a go at her if they’d been the ravaging bastardly types.
Lucky for her they weren’t.
“Should’ve walked away,” he muttered, his voice the only part of his body he could control.
A zing of pain shot through Logan’s feet, flexing them into an unnatural, paralyzed position. “Ah, shit!” Hadn’t his feet been numb just seconds ago?
Not even forcing his muscles to relax shook the sting away, one like a strike to the level of his bones, as if they shattered with impact.
He held his breath and clenched his teeth while the pain crept up his leg. “Motherfucker!” He spoke past gritted teeth, keeping his voice low to keep from rousing his babysitter, but damn, his back arched like one of those tetanus-infected bastards, his eyes squinting so hard they could’ve popped backward into his brain.
Black smoke curled behind his lids, and a deep laughter mocked him as the agony reached his spine. Trembling in the bed, Logan clamped his mouth shut and allowed the convulsions to run through him.
In silence.
He’d known pain—gut-turning, put-me-out-of-my-fucking-misery pain. Nothing compared to what wracked him at that moment, as if nightmares could invade the body and inflict injury. The burn, like molten lava oozing in his veins, seeped into his every cell, searing him from the inside. Sweat trickled down his temple at the same time as a chill burst deep inside his bones and swept through his limbs, leaving behind a wake of nausea.
That black smoke carried the familiar sensation he’d felt once or twice in his life—from the quick witted son of a bitch that brought the toughest demon males to their knees: absolute death. Stygius. The place in the underworld from where no soul ever returned.
With shallow panting breaths, he allowed the blackness worming its way into his mind to take over as something dark and wicked laid claim.
All Logan could do was let it take him.

Review: Soul Resurrected by Keri Lake (Plus a Scavenger Hunt!)

Title: Soul Resurrected
Series: Sons of Wrath, #2
Author: Keri Lake

Review: Hard As It Gets by Laura Kaye

Title: Hard As It Gets
Series: Hard Ink #1
Author: Laura Kaye
Published: November, 2013, Avon Books
Format: Galley (Thank you Avon, Laura Kaye and Edelweiss!)

Tall, dark, and lethal...

Trouble just walked into Nicholas Rixey's tattoo parlor. Becca Merritt is warm, sexy, wholesome--pure temptation to a very jaded Nick. He's left his military life behind to become co-owner of Hard Ink Tattoo, but Becca is his ex-commander's daughter. Loyalty won't let him turn her away. Lust has plenty to do with it too.

With her brother presumed kidnapped, Becca needs Nick. She just wasn't expecting to want him so much. As their investigation turns into all-out war with an organized crime ring, only Nick can protect her. And only Becca can heal the scars no one else sees.

Desire is the easy part. Love is as hard as it gets. Good thing Nick is always up for a challenge...

“…brotherhood is a two way street. You have to let me walk it with you.”

I was so excited to read this book!! I mean, it sounded perfect for me; jaded but sexy military guy, caring and in trouble heroine, tattoos… Hard As It Gets was so much more than all of that. Laura Kaye has written a book full of compelling characters that I will be sad to see go as each book in the series ends. At least, that’s how I felt when this book ended – I just wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet. Let me tell you why!

First we have Becca. She seemed just alright at first. She’s in trouble; it seems her brother is missing. He’s managed to get her a very cryptic message that leads her to the Hard Ink tattoo studio. It took me a couple chapters to warm up to Becca, but once I did, I was so fully on her team I could have had pompoms. She’s a nurse, which is good, because she has a natural caregiver instinct in her. But what I also loved about Becca is that she is a fighter. I mean, her dad was a big tough guy in the Army, so somehow that had to have been passed down to her a little bit, right? When her world starts deteriorating right before her eyes, she doesn’t crumble with it. No, she stood tall, rallied her forces, and fought back. I was right behind her with a resounding “yeah!”

And then Becca meets Nick, and it doesn’t go well. He turns down her plea for help, and she leaves feeling angry and let down as anyone would. And at first you’re all like, “hey Nick, WTF is that about? You’re supposed to be the hero!” Then it happens. She’s on his mind. He’s on her mind. A little of this, a little of that, and their lives are inexplicably changed forever. Nick turns out to be this caring and touching man, a man who protects what is his. A man who stands up for what’s right. A man who knows how it feels to lose the things that you hold dear and will fight until his last breath to make sure that you don’t ever have to feel that despair and that grief… A man who will draw the sweetest piece of art for you, and love you all night long in the best of ways. A man who you will fall for in this book every bit as much as I did.

So what happens in this book? Well, Nick ends up agreeing to help Becca. Then a lot of bad things happen back to back. But there are also some good things. Like a little pup, and some sexual tension that could peel paint from the walls. And a bunch of hugs with apologies and thank yous that will bring a tear to the toughest eye.

She gripped the collar of his coat; half afraid her knees would go soft and give out. Nick pulled his body away just enough to tear the coat off his arms and throw it to the floor. Geez, the gun holster was sexy hugging tight over his shirt, but he slipped out of it, too, and eased to the floor with a thunk. Then his hands were back on her breasts and his tongue was back in her mouth, stealing her breath and convincing her she could live without it.

God, this kiss. It was the kind she’d remember forever, that would invade her dreams and haunt her quiet moments. The kind her older self could look back on and know, once, she’d really lived. The kind that, no matter what, she could never, ever regret.

But wait. I said sexual tension. You didn’t think I would let this review go without talking about the sex, did you? ‘Course not!! The heat in this book was freaking awesome! Laura Kaye definitely knows how to write a toe-curler. There was a ton of teasing and false-starts that had me ready to chuck my kindle to the wall and curse the day Laura wrote this book, but I kept reading cause I knew she would bring it home perfectly. And that she did. What Becca and Nick share is emotional and raw and beautiful and sexy and hot and sweaty. It’s terrific. I loved every minute they shared together, and that is why I am a bit sad for this book to end. I loved this couple so much; I don’t want to see them go.

But let’s talk about some of the other characters. There is Jeremy, who is Nick’s brother. I seriously hope this guy gets his own book. He totally deserves it!!! He is charming, sexy, and every bit the man his brother is. And then there is Nick’s Army team, who are all completely endearing and sexy too.

The only thing that keeps this book from being a complete five star read for me is that I felt like some situations just got taken care of a bit too easily. They felt a bit rushed at times, and some questions were not really answered for me. Hopefully that will get cleared up in the next book. And of course, I am eagerly awaiting that one!
