On The Bright Side - SR Johannes

Book Title:

Publisher:
Coleman & Stott

Book Description:

On the Bright Side is a hilarious road to guardian angeldom paved with so much drama and due-paying that it makes middle school look painless.

As if the devil’s food cake at her wake and the white fat pants she’s stuck wearing for eternity weren’t bad enough, fourteen year-old Gabby is quick to discover that Cirrus, the main rung of Heaven, is a far cry from the Pearly Gates. Here, Skyphones and InnerNets are all the rage. Until Gabby finds out she has to protect Angela, her school nemesis, in order to move up through the training levels of heaven. Problem is, Angela is now hitting on Gabby's should-have-been boyfriend. (awkward!)

Instead of protecting Angela, Gabby pranks her (like tripping is a sin?) at the hopes of cooling off the new couple. At first, they seem harmless until the school dance sabotage gets completely out of control. Then, her Celestial Sky Agent, who happens to have anger management issues of his own, puts Gabby on probation, threatening her eternal future.

Determined to right her wrongs, Gabby steals an ancient artifact that allows her to return to Earth for just one day. Without knowing, she kicks off a series of events and learns what can happen when you hate someone to death.

Author Bio:

S.R. Johannes is the author of Untraceable (a teen wilderness thriller) and On The Bright Side ( a tween paranormal).
She started out writing for her local school paper, winning a state Nutrition essay contest for “Be a Smart Cookie”, and singing in a local Jazz band. Somewhere along the way, she earned an MBA in Marketing and embarked on an 18-year marketing career in Corporate America working as a marketing and communications consultant.
In 2000, S.R. traded in her expensive suits, way-too high heels, and corporate lingo for a family, flip-flops, and her love of writing. She started her own marketing & communications business, www.bilaninc.com, and continues creating materials for a variety of large profit and nonprofit clients, including Spanx, Goody Hair Products, Chick Filet, Delta, CARE, and the Boys & Girls Club of America.
S.R.’s dream is to publish children’s books and magically imprint the imaginations of kids. In addition to juggling nap schedules while attending client meetings, Shelli focuses on her writing. She is a frequent marketing speaker at SCBWI conferences across the U.S and runs a popular marketing blog, Market My Words (www.faeriality.blogspot.com) where she provides marketing advice for authors in the hopes of helping them better market their words.
In her spare time (yeah right!) and if the kids allow (yeah right!), Shelli obsesses over movies, reads children’s books (over and over), wishes she could squeeze in Bikram Yoga sessions, and dreams of sleeping in on the weekends.
She currently lives in Atlanta with her dog, British-accented husband, and the huge imaginations of their little prince and princess that someday will change the world.

Bewitching Blog Tours: Vala Agendas by JF Jenkins: Guest Post

Please allow me to welcome JF Jenkins as she speaks about something near and dear to every author's heart, I imagine.  Thank you very much for stopping by Fictional Candy, and best of luck with your release!

Vala Agendas
By J.F Jenkins
 Synopsis:
Cheyenne Loveless was just a boring sixteen-year-old girl. Then Denver Collins bit her and everything changed. Her plants start talking to her, she finds out she’s a Nymph, and a witch and the angel of death show up at her doorstep to take her away to the prestigious Vala School and Seminary. Oh, and she has no choice in the matter.

All she wants to do is blend in and return to being invisible, but the more time that passes, the harder that becomes. Plus she’s a daughter of the Divine, an exclusive secret society which rules the world of myth, and discovers she is a key ingredient to an ancient covenant created before she was born. A covenant that will reshape the order of the world.

Adjusting to a new school is difficult enough, but adding on everyone else’s hidden agendas is the icing on the cake. Cheyenne must learn to see through the lies in order to find her place — and possibly even love — in this new world.

By JF Jenkins
Today I was thinking about writing: what was popular, what sold well, and comparing that to what I wrote most of the time. I thought about the publishing business and the directions it was going in, and I was trying to decide how I wanted to keep moving in my career. There's the option of traditional publishing, self-publishing, and e-publishers. So many options. And I started to do the numbers game. What would sell best, what would get me the most hits and put me at the number one ranking on the big retailers.

I had to stop myself because not only was I getting depressed and jealous, but I started thinking about writing for the wrong reasons. I always told myself I wasn't going to become obsessed with numbers. For the most part, I don't check to see how many books a day I sell. There's a way to do it, but I don't want to know. I'll check to see how the rank is doing, if it went up or down or stayed the same, and if I have any new things up on goodreads. Beyond that, I try not to think about how well I'm doing because I don't want to get to the point where the numbers mean more than my work. Why? Because I don't want to forget why I started writing.

Tell the story, that has always been my goal. If people stick around to listen, awesome. If not, then at least I told it for my own sanity. Someone once upon a time tried to talk me out of this mentality, saying it was wrong of me to not want other people to read my work. I believe it was in “Little Women” where there was a scene about the budding author. Jo had just gotten published in the paper for the first time, and was celebrating her success. She shared it with her love interest and he said: “Vampires and corpses, is this the kind of thing that interests you?” She said, “No, but it's what people want to read about.” And he said something along the lines of, “Forgive me if I'm insulting you, but it makes me sad to hear you not write about the things that you are passionate about.” Again, it's a paraphrase, but the message has always stuck with me.

It's the motivation I try to keep when I'm writing. If I write about vampires and werewolves or whatever else is popular right now, it's not because it is popular. It's because it is what interests me. In my novel “Vala: Agendas” there is a character who is vampiric in nature. He sucks blood, woos women, and loves the night. He's not a stereotypical vampire though. When “Twilight” became popular, I almost scratched him out and changed the whole story because I didn't want people to think that I was trying to take advantage of a market.

I kept Denver Collins in my story because I loved him as a character. And that's what's important. That I love him and write him the way the story needs to be told.

Karen's Happy Birthday - George Boxlicker - Cross Post by Anna @Readit_Blogit

A big thanks to Liz here at Fictional Candy for letting me cross post my review on her fantastic website!
I'm Anna and I run Readit..Blogit.. I was asked if I'd review some erotica, and thought why not, I've never read anything like this before so was sure in for a surprise =)

Karen's Happy Birthday by George Boxlicker
Source: Review copy from Writer Marketing Services
Links: Amazon

|SYNOPSIS|

George Boxlicker enjoys a great deal of popularity among the woman in the city where he lives, mainly because of his knowledge of their sexual wants and needs and his willingness to fulfill all their desires in bringing them and himself to peaks of sexual ecstasy. One of his favorite "ladyfriends" is Karen, a beautiful, sensual divorcee and, to celebrate her birthday, he takes her to a bed and breakfast inn located on the coast 100 miles north of the city where they live. George and Karen provide tremendous sexual joy to each other as they cavort in and out of bed, besides having fun by fooling their fellow guests and the rather stuffy management of the inn. On their last night there, George introduces Karen to a different kind of sex, one which has always intrigued her, but which she has always been too shy to ask him or anybody else about. Their carnal escapades in bed that night result in some of the most memorable orgasms either of them has ever experienced. This is a graphically detailed story of romantic love between a man and a woman.

'Summery from Amazon'

Woahhh! I think that sums up my opinion on this book! This brilliant short story will have you feeling a tad flustered by the time you get to page 6 so be prepared to read the whole book!
I gotta admit I never read anything from the erotica genre before so I wasn't really sure what to expect.
So I started this one with no sort of expectation just curiosity to be honest, George & Karen went away for the weekend celebrating her birthday at a inn in a historic town, when you think about erotica, and a friends with benefits type couple away for a weekend its kinda obvious what to expect within the reading but to be honest I didn't have a clue! So when it started getting a little steamy between the pages so to speak I was surprised but intrigued so had to keep reading.

The Author is very good when it comes to being descriptive, I wanna picture it all in my head without struggling to piece together the images, but the descriptions are so vivid and real it's like a movie like I'm watching them. With this genre though you gotta be descriptive or really there isn't much point.

This is the kind of book I'd suggest reading with your partner, it would definitely be a plus for in the bedroom department because it definitely a storyline to turn someone on. Its a very sexy, smoking hot read and I will definitely recommend to people who are after spicing things up a little if ya get what I mean :)

I give this book..

 5 stars..

Happy reading
Anna =)

Swag Giveaway?!!?  Heck yeah!!!!!! What's inside?  Maybe a mug, teeshirt, tote bag...  Some other little bits for you?!?!

So let's not waste time, here's the interview!!

*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Welcome Wanita!!!  How the heck are you doing?
Heyyyy Liz!  Thanks so much for having me here!  I really appreciate you letting me stop by for a cyber-visit.  And I’m doing awesome!  I had a local book signing this weekend, so I’m still on a kind of high from that (and also your fantastic review)
Thank you so much for the return compliment!

Ok, we’re going to jump right in.  Ahem, which I’m sure you know how to do (Readers, do you want to see one of Wanita’s other accomplishments?  See Wiki!)
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m human, no superpowers though (sigh). But I am the lucky kid who gets to wake up on the right side of the bed every morning and my glass is always half full.  J  I’m married, have 3 awesome little kiddies and the hubby and I run our own antique & collectables online business (betchya you weren’t expecting that!) We mainly deal in vintage jewelry and porcelain.  I write on the side to let the demons and crazies out of my head J lol

Can you tell us something about Rae of Hope that’s not in the synopsis?
It’s set in the present, but based on Tudor times.  I’m fascinated with history and love the Tudor era.  It is used throughout the entire series.  In book two you’ll learn about the Privy Council, and more!
That is so great, I can't wait!

And who would you say is the inspiration, if anyone, for Rae?
Her mother.  She’s deceased but when Rae learns more about the past and her family history, she really connects with her mom and she wants to be the daughter that would make her mother proud.
I also think Rae connects with Molly on a different level.  Molly’s … well, Molly’s Molly and I think all of us have had a friend that’s like her and knows their friendship is tried and true.
I know I fell in love with Molly, I can't wait to see more of her in the rest of the series!

Who would play Rae in the movie? Any thoughts on who would play Devon or Molly?
This is a great question.  I thought about this many times and I have ideas on the older characters but each time I come up with an idea for Rae, Molly or Devon … I change my mind.
Alexandra Daddario (from Percy Jackson & the Lightening Thief) would make an awesome Rae… ask me next week, I might change my mind again  J
I know exactly what Devon would look like (Anyone remember Roswell TV show?  The mc guy there … to me, that’s Devon’s look.)
And Molly?    I’d love for her to be someone fresh… a bit of an unknown who is stunning, bubbly and has a great smile J
I think both of those choices are fantastic!  I can clearly see Rae and Devon as each of them!

And honestly, I loved Rae’s roommate, Molly.  Can you give us any tidbits of info on what’s in store for her in the future?
She’s definitely back for book two.  Molly, Rae, Devon, Julian are all back… and again in book three.  She’s got a great tatu that is going to start reaching some of its potential in book three.  I can’t see the series without her.  I love Molls as well!  And she’s actually going to meet someone (don-don-da-donnn  - queue the music)

Ok, as I hinted at earlier, you are an accomplished athlete.  I know it’s like comparing apples to oranges, but what do you think is more difficult – writing or high jumping?
Hmm… that’s another great question.  I was actually thinking about this the other day.  There are a lot of similarities – in marketing the book (it’s like marketing the athletic event, etc…) the physical training of HJ was definitely a lot harder than setting the base of a book.  I loved the travelling and seeing so many beautiful cities while I competed.  I loved competing – against myself and against others.  I loved trying to soar higher than I’d ever done before. I loved training so hard … I loved all of it.  With writing – it’s the same.  I love thinking on an idea that sprouts into a story.  I love doing edits or being challenged to change something or make things link together.  It’s competitive in its own right own right as well.
I’m not sure I’m making any sense here ;)  I do see a lot of similarities but have never thought about which is harder.  Both are challenging.  Now, if you asked me to go out and start training like I used to – that would be next to impossible.  My poor body would spit me out on the side of the road and tell me get lost J  But, if you are curious, I help at my 6year olds grade school and last spring I saw the HJ mats in the gymnasium floor.  No one around – I jumped 1.65m (about 5’6”) just to see if my legs still held their spring J  and yes, I made it! Lol

Do you have any writing habits, like food you munch on or music you listen to?
I love just hitting shuffle on the IPod when I’m writing.   I have 3 kids so most of my writing and editing gets down in the evening.  Sometimes late into the night … though morning seems to come earlier and earlier these days!  So, I would love to be able to have a few days a week to just simply write.  That would be a dream!
I can imagine! My one kid will run me ragged, I can't imagine 3!

You are going to Ultimate Super Power War (that’s the official name, you know).  What power do you want your enemy to have??
Can we settle on something like Solomon’s wisdom? I know it’s Biblical, but if my enemy had Wisdom, they’d be able to see that the need for war is unnecessary.  That we could make peace and work together would be better than fighting.
HOWEVER, if you are looking for something more on the fun side:
Enemy has to be the best bubble gum blower in the entire world.  They have to be able to blow the biggest bubbles (then my side can shoot arrows to pop the bubbles and cover them in sticky, gooey, mess!

From my online stalking of you, I saw you did a radio interview recently!!  How was it?  (And is there a place we can listen to it online??)
Hee hee – here’s the link:
The radio announcer’s name is Tim Denis and I believe it is episode 44
I also have a TV interview link if you want that:
http://ikfadtv.com/index.php/video/v/295
I've watched/listened to both - and you did great!  You seemed totally at ease with the media :)

What is your favorite day of the year?
My kids’ birthdays J

Personally, I feel Rae is a fabulous role model for young girls.  How do you feel about her?
I wanted her to be a role model J  I wanted to show that she’s not perfect but is striving to make good with what she’s got.  I like the idea of a sixteen year with a tattoo on their lower back be labeled as a “tramp stamp” because we, as humans, are so quick to judge others on appearance without knowing the entire story.  I wanted to show that despite judgment, Rae continued to make something of her choices.  She’s a good kid, bit of a lousy past, doesn’t always believe in the following the rules, gets tempted like everyone else, but all in all, she’s good to the core J

Are you working on any new writing projects?
I’m waiting for the edits on the second book in the series to come back from the publisher.  I’m editing another series with my agent right now (which reminds me, I have another book to edit as well). And I’m also working on another series…  if my fingers could only keep up with my brain!  tee hee hee

And do you have any advice for other aspiring authors out there?
Write – write what you love to read and what you love in life.  Join a critique group and hone in on your skills.  Learn more, write more, edit more and enjoy the challenges.

You have three children.  How did that factor into writing this story?
In life, you want what is best for your kids and wish they won’t have to go through pain or loss.  I lost my Dad three months prior to writing Rae of Hope and the scene with Rae reading a letter from her mom – it wasn’t hard to be in that spot. To feel the loss and then to turn it around.  Rae’s a result my loss and it is a good – it’s a great thing.
I’m not sure if this answers your question in particular but my kiddies definitely helped mold some of the characters in the story.

Ok, and possibly the hardest question of the interview.  Luckily it’s multiple choice. … Are you…
A)     Walking on Sunshine
B)      Walk(ing) Like an Egyptian
C)      Walk(ing) This way
D)     Walk(ing) On The Wild Side

How about E)  I Walk the Line J  Gotta love me some Johnny Cash!!!
Otherwise – it’s a bit of all of the above
Ok, that’s all the questions I have for now.  Thank you so much for being with us today, and offering up this fantastic giveaway!
Thanks again for having me!!

Giveaway is open in US & Canada to anyone age 13 and older.
Winner will have 48 hours to respond to winning notification or a new winner will be chosen.

Danielle D. Smith - Demon's Slave: Guest Post/Giveaway

Welcome to my spot on the Demon's Slave Tour, by Dark Mind Book Tours! Today I am oh-so-lucky to have the author, Danielle D. Smith here to tell us a couple things about Skrike and Rose that we may not know. I also read Demon's Slave. Wow, it practically melted my Kindle!! You can read the review HERE

So without further delay, here's
Danielle D. Smith!

5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT SKRIKER AND ROSE

You’ve read their stories…and if you haven’t, well, perhaps it’s time! Ruckus, fun-as-hell, gore-splattered supernatural hunts that will leave you breathless…and sweaty sex peppered throughout that will leave you without breath period!

But any good character will have more to them than the sum of their stories written down and published for the world. And we all need a little random fun in our lives. So, I’m offering my fans (old and new) a fun little glimpse at what makes Skriker and Rose “tick” when the excitement dies down. ;-)

Danielle's Artwork of Rose

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Rose:

1.) Rose is always broke. Most of the time, she can’t pay the rent on her shitty studio apartment. She flirts shamelessly with her landlord, a greasy little dude who comes hollering for the rent when it’s late, trying to stave him off for another week.

2.) Rose lost her virginity to an angel while hunting in Jerusalem at seventeen. Their affair lasted for over three months—the longest romance that Rose had before Skriker.

3.) Rose’s favorite color is pink, though she won’t admit it to most folks.

4.) Rose’s secret guilty pleasure is watching daytime soaps. And she sometimes cries during a particularly romantic moment.

5.) When Rose was very small, she told her mother, Psyche, that she wanted to be a mommy when she grew up. Rose doesn’t remember this, but I find it to be a very telling fact.

Danielle's Artwork of Skriker

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Skriker:

1.) Our demonic bad boy may be dirty in the sack, but he’s a certified neat freak at home. After living homeless in a dry sewer tunnel or squatting in abandoned houses for two years as a kid, Skrike can’t stand filth—dust, dirt, and grime are the enemy. He keeps his cupboards crammed front to back with cleaners, polishes, bleach, sponges, and disinfecting sundries, and he would show you his top-of-the-line vacuum cleaner with the same pride that a lesser man would show you his prized sports car or the size of his cock.

2.) Skriker frequently pays his broke girlfriend’s rent. Rose just pretends that she knows nothing about the envelope of cash that magically appears in the building’s drop box with her apartment number on it, but she smirks privately just the same.

3.) When Skriker was four, he took a piss on the rose bushes at church…during the coffee and donut social hour.

4.) Skriker and his little brother, Rory, would play a game during church services, much to their mother Annie’s horror. It wasn’t just the fact that her boys were sticking their tongues out at each other…it’s that their tongues were black and forked, something that made the little old church ladies in big hats do a double-take in the pews.

5.) After his first adventure with Rose in Paradise Hills, Skriker went to Mass for the first time in years. He took communion, and then sat in the pews with his rosary beads and a huge smirk on his face, muttering, “Thank you, thank you, thank you…” as the little old ladies in big hats once again glared. ;-)

Title: Demon's Slave
From Goodreads:
Rose, Nephil daughter of a Warrior of Heaven, has betrayed her celestial heritage by falling for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks: Skriker, tattooed half-demon hunter, and the most irresistible chunk of hard meat that she has ever taken to her bed.

Rose knows that there is no love in all of Creation more forbidden than that between an angel and a demon, and that knowledge has left her terribly fragmented, despite her passionate love for her Halfling bad boy.

As Skriker's "Dirty 30" approaches, she will offer him the ultimate birthday gift: she will be his devoted sexual slave for three days and three nights, laying aside her angelic pride to fully commit to his pleasure (and hers) with every part of her being...and neither Heaven nor Hell will have any power to stop it.

######
First two lines:
“What am I doing? God, tell me I’m not insane”
I was hooked right from that line.  It instantly lent to the intrigue that I hoped would follow.

I am a new reader to Danielle D. Smith, and I can say that I want to read more!  And I mean, like right now!  And thankfully I have some more from the Rose and Skriker series all set to read – because now I need it like a fix.

This story is about Rose, the child of a human and an angel.  And Rose is in a relationship with Skriker, a halfling demon.  The whole story is a battle of good vs. evil; light vs. dark, happy vs.… a lonely life alone without your soul mate.

First things first, you can’t ignore that this is an erotic story.  It is HOT in the hottest sense of the word.  The sex scenes were dripping with sensuality, kink, and lust.  They were done perfectly, and I couldn’t ask for more.  This is a good thing, because the sex is the majority of the story.  The BDSM level is high and explicit.  Readers wanting a bit more of an edge will definitely find it within these pages.

Rose is fighting her inner argument (and outward argument with her father) about her relationship with a demon.  But she loves Skriker.  No, not just love… it’s like they’ve finally found each other and live for each other.  The declarations of love in this story are absolutely tender and heart melting.  It is a raw emotional bond they share, and you feel it right in the core of your heart.

And so that brings us to the leading man, Skriker.  Halfling demon shifter.  Platinum blond tattooed solid hunk.  Pure man.  This demon Master has perfection perfected.  The scenes with him were so hot they set my kindle on fire.  He worships the ground Rose walks on.  I haven’t read the stories leading up to this, so some references were lost on me.  This didn’t detract from the story at all.  But I did find myself feeling so bad for Skriker.  I want him to be happy and fully accepted for who he is, and the devotion he has!
Hands down this story is hot.  It’s emotional.  It’s heartwarming.  I read it in one sitting, and I bet you will too.  Enjoy!

Along the way, Grace learns terrible secrets that sever relationships and lives. Soon she’s enmeshed in a web of conspiracy, deception, and murder. And it’s going to take a lot more than a compass and a motorcycle (named Lucifer) for this kick-butting heroine to save everything she loves.

I really enjoyed a particular aspect to this book. First, each chapter isn’t named “Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.”  They are named “Survival Skill 1, Survival Skill 2, etc” And then there is a line or two of a survival skill, which correlates to the chapter.  I’m a sucker for these little things, the attention to details really adds to the story for me.  This book has a ton of facts about surviving the wilderness and tracking.  But it doesn’t feel like a text book – although I definitely feel like I learned something above and beyond being entertained.  The author must have done a ton of research, or possibly grew up in the mountains to have amassed such a large amount of knowledge.

Right away, in the very first chapter, there is action.  Someone is chasing Grace, and she is running through the forest, mentally going over the things her father has taught her about survival.  Immediately she strikes me as a very intelligent and mature for her age girl and I like her.

Grace’s father is a Game Warden in North Carolina, and he’s been missing for over three months.  Everyone has given up hope – except Grace.  She is bound and determined to find out what is going on and she will not stop until she finds him or finds a complete answer.

The entire book moves at a quick pace, I was excited at every page turn to find out what happens next.  There were so many twists and turns, it felt very fresh all throughout the story.  There was a lot of “Oh, I’m sure it’s this person!” and then “oh no, I know it’s this person!” I really felt like I was brought along to figure out the answers with Grace, not just told what was happening.  You don’t know who to trust, and who is really helping you – or hurting you.

This book will take you through your emotional stock, that’s for sure.  You will laugh, and be fearful.  You may even cry – I did.  When Grace is happy, you feel her joy.  But then there are other times you can just see and feel the despair dripping off of her, your heart will break for her.  And you find yourself swearing to be her steady partner on this journey to find out the truth.

Grace doesn’t seem to have many friends, perhaps because she was so close with her father and spent so much time in the woods.  Often she will think back to a story from her childhood, a memory of her and her dad.  But she does have one, Wyn.  He is her best friend and also an ex-boyfriend.  He is terrific, and I did develop a bit of a crush on him.  He’s funny and sincere, and willing to do whatever he can to help Grace.  But yet Grace doesn’t tell Wyn about Mo, the hot guy she’s met in the woods and developed a “thing” for.  I’ve got mixed feelings about Mo.  Maybe I’m just a sucker for what she had, and not what’s waiting for her.  You’ll have to read and figure out your own opinion on that one.

And then things get dangerous.  Very serious and very dangerous.  She learns she can’t trust the people she thought she could, and finds allies where she had given up. There are some very strong “what’s next!??!?!” moments that will definitely leave you on the edge of your seat.  But there are also some very tender and intimate moments, where you get to take a peak in at contentment and happiness.

I really enjoyed this book quite a bit.  The sequel, Uncontrollable, comes out in 2012.  There was definitely a chance for it, and I was glad when I flipped the last page and saw there was indeed another book coming.
