FE Heaton - Masquerade - Guest Post/Giveaway

The Creator Day masquerade – gathering old and new characters

It’s great to be here at Fictional Candy for the next stop on the virtual book tour for my new vampire romance, Masquerade. Masquerade is the tenth book in my ongoing Vampires Realm romance series. Don’t worry if you haven’t read the others, as Masquerade does stand alone.

Today, I’m going to talk about revisiting past characters in the Vampires Realm series.

I love the Vampires Realm series. My love for it isn’t all about the type of vampire I created or their darkness and the fact I get to explore such a dangerous, deadly world without feeling the need to apologise for it or my characters’ actions. Yes, I like to write vampires that bite and behave as vampires should, treating most humans as nothing more than a food source and seeking to eradicate any mortal who dares to raise a stake against them. There is something exhilarating about writing my kind of vampire, and I refuse to apologise for how dark they can be, and I think you secretly all love them for that deadlier side to their nature.

One of the major reasons I love writing the Vampires Realm series is the cast of characters I have assembled throughout the ten books in the series so far, and the fact that I can revisit them any time I want.

Supporting characters from earlier books have become heroes or heroines in later novels in the series, and heroes and heroines from older books in the series have popped up as supporting cast in newer ones. The series is all about the world of the seven pure bloodlines in Europe, and that means politics, prophecies, wars and all manner of events that can make vampires of the different families cross paths, join forces, or try to kill each other.

I noticed as the series began to grow that readers wanted to see characters from past books in cameos or major roles in newer books. When I wrote the Prophecy Trilogy, the first three books in the series, I introduced not only one heroine and two heroes (Prophecy and Valentine, and Venturi as a secondary hero) but a whole cast of characters and several story arcs that have either been written or will shortly join the series. Readers haven’t only asked about seeing more of their favourite hero and heroine though. I’m often asked when Hyperion will have his book. The intense, sexy, wicked, dangerous and amusing lord of the Validus, the strongest bloodline, has been in several books in the series and each time he appears, more and more readers ask about him. Now, I’ve begun to promise that his book is coming. We’ve reached the right point in the timeline of the series and he is due his romance at last, but before then I have to write about two other heroines and heroes previously mentioned in other novels.

While I have written some characters from previous books into later ones in the series, I have never attempted anything like Masquerade.

Writing Masquerade was both a dream and a nightmare. With the seven pure bloodlines coming together for two nights of partying, and with vampire hunters determined to do away with them all, I knew I had to assemble a cast that was both exciting and daunting.

Nearly every past hero and heroine from the series turns up in Masquerade. In fact, the only ones missing are Nicolae and Tatyana from Hunter’s Moon, the ninth book, and that’s because they live in Canada and he’s a werewolf and therefore she’s a vampire who would be high on the Law Keepers’ (the vampire police) list of people to detain and destroy.

I juggled Vivek and Sophis, the hero and heroine of Masquerade, and a host of new characters from the Venia bloodline, together with previous characters from that family (Tynan included, and boy is he steadily gaining a following of his own), and found that difficult enough. On top of the Venia bloodline, I also had to write several past characters from other families in major roles. Hyperion of the Validus bloodline, everyone’s favourite three thousand year old vampire, is one of them. Prophecy, Valentine and even Venturi have important parts in the plot. Lincoln and Lilith from the book Seventh Circle too. The Law Keepers, although not every one of them is present, and even the free werewolves, including Dmitri, their lord.

I loved revisiting these characters because I knew that readers would be excited about seeing their past favourites reappear and catching up with them. I also loved writing them because I knew some of them would have new characters in attendance with them, and I was excited to see how readers would react to them, and how many would spot other future Vampires Realm stories taking place during the timeline of the Masquerade plot.

But I also loved revisiting these characters because it gave me a chance to reconnect with the series, with these vampires, vampire hunters, and ex-vampire hunters, and gave me a chance to write my own past favourites. I was excited when plotting Masquerade, knowing that I would see so many familiar and loved faces, and would have a chance to catch up with them and write titbits about what they have been up to and hint at future stories that might contain them, but I was even more excited when these characters finally entered the scenes. I saw them all in my head again, spoke to them and listened to what they had to tell me about themselves, and wrote it all down.

Masquerade has an ensemble cast of around thirty-five characters. Some of them are new, some will become heroes or heroines in future books, some are familiar faces, but all of them were a pleasure to write and I hope they capture your imaginations if you’re new to them, or bring a smile to your face and make you remember their stories if you’ve met them in the past... just as writing them brought a smile to mine.

I would like to take this moment to mention that there is a grand giveaway running throughout the whole of the Masquerade Book Tour. Ten years have passed since Sophis and Vivek, two vampires of the Venia bloodline, came close to death at the hands of twin hunters Aleksis and Izabella Romanov. The events of that night turned Sophis and Vivek against each other, shattering their close friendship and driving them apart.
Now, on the eve of a centenary Creator Day masquerade and at a time when things between them are dangerously close to separating them forever, they uncover a small army of vampire hunters in Saint Petersburg, led by their nemeses, Aleksis and Izabella.
With the safety of the rulers of the seven pure vampire bloodlines in their hands and their chance for vengeance hanging in the balance, can Sophis and Vivek face their past and overcome their differences? Will they realise their true feelings for each other before it’s too late or will the hunters finally claim their lives as their deadly plot to destroy the bloodlines unfolds?
