Interview & Review: Whispers of Night by Erin Simone

Title: Whispers of Night
Series: Immortal Embrace, Book 1
Author: Erin Simone
Published: August 2013, Ellora's Cave Twilight
Format: Ebook provided for review

A businessman by day, by night Dane stalks the streets, fighting against a rising tide of vampire-related homicides. As a member of the Order of the Dragon, he vows to fight other vampires, ones who have given in to their bloodlust. He doesn't do it for humans-he seeks revenge, to destroy the bastards who turned him into a monster.

But then he rescues a woman who calls to him like no other. As their passion ignites and his desire for her threatens to consume him, he starts to wonder what, exactly, is worth fighting for.

Jenny's old life ends in a parking garage. She's reborn into a world of fantastic creatures-and unimaginable pleasures. The fierce warrior who saved her makes her feel love and lust as she's never felt before, and she soon discovers her dark prince is not what he seems. Love, jealousy and betrayal collide and neither Jenny nor Dane will ever be the same.

Inside Scoop: This steamy vampire romance features an alpha hero who indulges in taboo pleasures with his mate...you've been warned.

As soon as I saw the cover and read the blurb, I knew I wanted to read Whispers of Night. I had no idea what was in store for me, but I soon found out, that’s for sure.

Dane Voss was turned into a vampire a couple years ago, and he agreed to join a group of “vegetarian” vampires who hunt other vampires that dare to feed from humans. He’s an interesting sort of a man. Dane lives quite the solitary life, as far as companionship. But that is all about to change once he meets Jenny. But as for Dane, I liked him. He seemed like a strong Alpha male sort of vampire. He was very considerate and careful with Jenny, and he took care of her from the first moment he saw her, which I loved. The thing I didn’t really like about him is that he referred to himself as a “walking abomination”, and that just made me a bit sad for him.

Jenny is also quite the interesting character. She seems a bit naïve, yet she has seen so much in her short life. She’s also been strong enough to overcome her past, and I think that says a lot about her. On top of that, Jenny just landed a job at Voss International right out of college. Unfortunately for her, she’s about to get attacked by a vampire. In the end, I’m a bit on the fence about her. There were times I felt she was overly selfish, and thinking only of herself. That really kind of grated on me, because mates generally can only think of their mate, even before themselves.

This book had some definite characteristics that I liked. One, Erin Simone’s vampires have the ability to trace, which is basically the ability to transport themselves anywhere that they’ve seen before. I like when vampires get a little bit more of an edge to their powers than they usually have. There are also werewolves in this book, and that was awesome to see the two paranormal species interact.

As for the storyline, I liked it. It was an interesting plotline, full of action and a bit of mystery. There were plenty of sexy times, and like the blurb states, some bits of it were a bit taboo. There were some points in the story that I wished were a bit more detailed. Several times I had to go re-read a few paragraphs to make sure of where I was. I think this was largely due to the vampiric tracing. It happened so fast sometimes that I just didn’t catch it, and the location change was a bit jarring.

Overall, the story was pretty good. It was a good concept and it was fun to read. I think if you like books with wars between different sects of vampires, this would be a good read for you, especially if you like some hot sex in your books.

I also was lucky enough to get to interview Erin!  Check that out, too!

***Interview***

Hi Erin!  Thanks so much for joining me today!
You’re welcome.  I’m very happy to be here.  Thanks you for having me on your blog.

Let’s talk about Whispers of Night.  Can you tell us a bit about this story, something outside of the blurb?
My story centers around Dane  Voss a 300 year old vampire who’s life is changed forever when his path crosses with Jenny Harlon a young woman he saves  from the clutches of a nasty Rogue. Dane is a lethal hunter  who serves the Order of Dragon, a secret society of vampires sworn to protect humans.  Jenny Harlon is irresistably drawn to him and chemistry between these two characters is pretty hot. There’s lots of steamy sex, vampire warriors, sexy wolf shifters, evil villians and the internal battle between honor and the desire to fully embrace love. It also is the first book in my Immortal Embrace series.

I recently read this book, and I loved the hero, Dane Voss.  Can you tell us where the inspiration for this vampire came from, and does he by chance resemble any celebrity?
Ian Somerhalder from the Vampires Diaries (He plays Damon) kept popping into my head. I didn’t pick him because I watched the show. But when I saw his picture, he reminded me of Dane.  Also, he’s pretty hot in my opinion.
(uhhh, total understatement! I love him!)

There is a lot that happens in Whispers of Night.  When you write a book, do you follow an outline, or do you just write and let the story fall into place?
I usually do a general outline of the story. But the characters tell the story and I don’t strictly follow the outline because things change. It’s more of a referral source than anything else.

How about a little behind the scenes action?  Are there any fun little tidbits about this story you could share with us?
I enjoy shaking things up a bit in a story.  If they go wow, I wasn’t expecting that and it grabs them, then I’m a happy camper. My beta reader called me after she read the initial rough draft of this book. She said there was one scene in particular that shocked the hell out of her because she wasn’t expecting it, and she loved it because it really drew her in.  I chuckled to myself because I knew exactly what scene she was referring to before she even described it. Let’s just say my female villain is diabolical and loves to play mind games…LOL.

Now this book also had quite a few of the steamy sex scenes.  As an author, do you find these easy to write or more difficult?
They’re not easy to write.  It takes a lot practice. I wish I could whip out a scene on the first draft, but usually I have to rewritten the scene a few times before it’s the way I want it.

Erin, do you have any other projects in the works that we can look forward to?
Yes, I’m in line edits right now on Shadows of Night, the second book in the series. I’m also trying to finish the third book Seduction of Night which I hope to turn into my editor in the next few months.  In addition, I have several other projects in the works. But right now my focus is on my vampire series.

If you weren’t an author, is there another dream job you would like to have?
I can’t think of anything else I would want to do more than write. I live and breathe writing. I’m really passionate about the craft.

Ok, I can’t ignore it – the cover for Whispers of Night is super-hot.  How did this cover come to be?
Ellora’s Cave takes all the credit for the gorgeous cover.  All I did was give a brief description to my publisher of what I wanted and they did the rest.  EC rocks!!!

And lastly, if there is one thing your readers can take away from your books after they’ve finished, what would it be?
That they enjoyed the story so much they want to read it again while they wait for the next book to come out in the series…

Thank you so much, Erin, for taking the time today.  It was nice talking to you!

First – let me say I hate Angeline Kace. What? Yep. I do. Why? Cause now she has me totally invested in this kick ass series – and the third book is not out yet! When Enemy Within ended, and I realized I had just read the last page, I felt like the guy in the movies who falls to his knees in the rain and screams toward the sky in agony. I even clicked my kindle page forward/backward buttons a few times, trying to will more words to appear. It didn’t work. So yeah, sorry Angeline Kace, but I hate you now.

Brooke begins a dangerous journey in an effort to find out who is after her and how to stop them. In a world with powerful and prejudiced vampires, Brooke must tap into the side of her that she never knew existed at the risk of losing her life in order to save it.

I’ve had this book on my kindle for I don’t know how long. A long time. It’s always been one of those, “I will get to it when I can” books, even though I’ve seen rave reviews about it from other bloggers I follow. Then an opportunity came up to review the second book in this series, and so I had to start on the first one. I’ll be honest – I’d estimate that in the first third of this book or so I had thought about DNF’ing it. There were some parts that seemed a bit cheesy, and I thought it read a bit younger than I really was in the mood for.

Review: Pleasure Cruise by Mandy M Roth and Michelle M Pillow

Title: Pleasure Cruise
Series: Pleasure Cruise #1
Authors: Michelle M Pillow, Mandy M Roth
Published: March 2012, Raven Books
Format: I won it!

Clare needs to loosen up and have some fun--not to mention some hot sex with someone other than herself. Her best friend, Kira, knows exactly what she needs--a vacation full of hunky single men who'll knock her panties off. When she booked the cruise for Clare's birthday, the travel agent left out one tiny detail. It's a supernatural cruise, and they aren't getting off until they're married.

The powers that be are tired of waiting for the supernatural to find their own mates and reproduce. In a desperate act to get the dwindling population back up, they've decided to take matters into their own hands. Dominik, a lycan, and Braden, a vampire, are just the two perfect candidates to start this experiment. They're sexy, in the prime of their reproductive immortal lives and ready to mate--just as soon as they can seduce their unsuspecting brides, or at the very least, keep them from swimming back to shore.

Rating: Contains graphic sexual content, adult language, and violence. This book is an erotic title. That means it's super, mega hot and full of steamy, melt your sock off sex. If that isn't for you, you should move along to a less steamy title.

Things that come to mind when I think of the book Pleasure Cruise:
  • Friends
  • Fun
  • Hot men
  • Sexy as hell nights (and days!)
  • Snark!

Friends, if you’ve not read this book, please do yourself a favor and put it on your TBR now. Preferably near the top. You will not be disappointed. It was so much fun to read!

The story starts with a rather interoffice memo that lead me to use this book in this past week’s Quote-Tastic post. It is from The Powers That Be regarding the dwindling population numbers among the supernatural, and bringing humans aboard the ever popular Pleasure Cruise in hopes mating will take place. Grand idea! Where the hell do I sign up for this??

And the two human girls in this story who get to go on this cruise are Kira and Clare. It was Kira’s idea, of course. She’s a bit of a crazy girl, always looking for some fun. Clare, on the other hand, is a bit more reserved and still licking her wounds after a broken heart. But you can’t say no to Kira, can you? The only thing is that neither of these girls is fully aware of what this cruise is about. They may each think they know, but they have no idea!

Our two leading men are Dominik and Braden. Dominik is a Russian werewolf. ‘Nuff said, I know. But let me go on! Dominik is fantastically awesome! At first all I could think was he was a super creeper, but it wasn’t long before I thought he was just perfect. Tall, dark, handsome and yet caring and sensitive and packing a huge… punch. And Braden… British vampire. ‘Nuff said, again. Am I right, or am I right? Both of these men are super hot and sexy, with libidos to match. They have certain supernatural powers that really help them out from time to time, and they are the male form of besties. Do men even call themselves besties? I couldn’t have picked better men to star in this fun-fest!

I don’t want to give it all away, but let’s just say there are some funny things that happen this story. We’re talking mistaken rooms, mind play, swinging vibrators like bats… Yep, I did just say that. I freakin’ laughed OUT LOUD! Mandy and Michelle have proven themselves to be a perfectly paired team on this book. And more than funny there is sexy, and the sexy will burn you up! You will be panting and sweating and begging for more!

I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed this book. It was lighthearted and fun. It left me smirking and overjoyed, and eager to read the next one in line, Date With Destiny, which involves some were-panther twin brothers. Oh, I have GOT to read that one!!

So how about it? Have you read this book? Are you going to?

Review/Giveaway: Dark Salvation by Katie Salidas

Title: Dark Salvation
Series: Immortalis #6
Author: Katie Salidas
Published: March 2013, Rising Sign Books
Format; Ebook received for review

A gathering storm of violence is on the horizon. Whispered threats of the Acta Sanctorum’s return have the supernatural world abuzz. Only recently aware of the other world hidden behind our own, Kitara Vanders has barely scratched the surface of what being supernatural truly means. A special woman in her own right, she possesses unique telepathic abilities, gifts that have recently come under the scrutiny of the Acta Sanctorum, a fanatical organization whose mission is to cleanse the world of anything supernatural. Targeted and marked for death, Kitara’s only hope lies with the lethally seductive yet emotionally scarred warrior Nicholas.

Knowing full well the atrocities of which the Acta Sanctorum is capable, Nicholas is all too eager for the battle to begin. Fueled by pain and rage from the loss of his mate, he’s itching for a fight, but one thing stands in his way: Kitara, a beautiful dark-haired woman with unique psychic abilities and an unusual link to the Saints. Despite his resolve to remain focused on his mission, a purely physical relationship binds them together in a way neither of them expected. And when her life hangs in the balance, Nicholas finds his own is teetering on the edge too.

This was my first introduction to the Immortalis series, and to Katie Salidas, too.  And in all honesty, I really liked this book.  Dark Salvation is number six in the series, but at no point did I feel lost or like I was missing backstory.  I think that is important when dealing with a high numbered series, because sometimes people just aren't able to start from book one.

Nicholas is a vampire, a very old vampire.  I mean like centuries old.  And lately he's been a bit of a jerk.  It's not that he doesn't have reason though.  His mate, Rozaline, had died a few months prior.  And he is just not moving on.  He is training and pushing everyone around him to train more.  Train for what?  To kill the Saints.  The Acta Sanctorum, the ones responsible for her death.  Aside from that, he's a bit of a gruff guy, and some might even say a bit of a jerk.  And then one night his old friend, Lysander, takes him out on the town, to try and regroup.  And that's when he first meets her.  Kitara.

Kitara is a witch, but she will tell you she is just a pagan.  And she has a lot of power, enough that she can withstand Nicholas' mind intrusion.  Not even vampires can do that, so color him impressed.  She's a sparky woman, she stands up for herself and she is tough.  I like her. Kitara also has a habit of getting herself right into harm's path, but luckily for her, Nicholas is able to show up - multiple times - and save her.  Enough that he keeps a tally.  She is in Boston searching for her boyfriend who left her when he became tied up with the Saints.  He considered her to be part of the supernatural things he now hated.

And there was some humor.  Snarky and fun humor, lots of banter between Nicholas and Kitara.  I loved that.  It really helped offset times when there was action, high tension, or dramatic scenes.  It wasn't a "love at first sight" type of thing with them.  The relationship between the two of them really wasn't even a sure thing.  At least that's what it felt like to me.  And I liked that too, not knowing.

But when something happens and Kitara is missing, all bets are off.  Nicholas is a man on a mission.  And oh boy, do I love a man on a mission when it comes to the woman he has realized he cares for!

So this book has a lot of aspects that I really love.  It's got the fire and spark, along with sexual chemisty - and sexual heat.  Sexy vampires and kickass women.  I think its a definite must read!

Katie Salidas is a Super Woman! Endowed with special powers and abilities, beyond those of mortal women, She can get the munchkins off to gymnastics, cheerleading, Girl Scouts, and swim lessons. She can put hot food on the table for dinner while assisting with homework, baths, and bedtime… And, she still finds the time to keep the hubby happy (nudge nudge wink wink). She can do all of this and still have time to write.
And if you can believe all of those lies, there is some beautiful swamp land in Florida for sale… Katie Salidas resides in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mother, wife, and author, she does try to do it all, often causing sleep deprivation and many nights passed out at the computer. Writing books books is her passion, and she hopes that her passion will bring you hours of entertainment.

Steamy Excerpt Love!

“You act like you haven’t seen a woman before.” Kitara teased.

“It’s been a long time.”

She must have picked up the hesitation in his voice. “I’m sorry, was that rude of me? I just meant—”

Nicholas silenced her with a finger. “Tonight is for us. No pain. No past. Just this.” He had to remind himself as well. He found himself connecting with her in ways he had not thought possible before. But she was not his. And would never be. Tonight was for fun. Stress relief. Taking their mind off things. Hell, any excuse would work, but the bottom line was, none of this would happen again.

His hand traveled down to the small thatch of curls between her legs. He captured her lips again as his fingers found her clit. She was so wet, so hot, and Nicholas loved the way her body responded to his touch.

Kitara moaned into his mouth as he rolled her nub between his fingers. She reached out and wove her fingers into his soft dark hair, tugging and yanking as he hit just the right spots.
He loved that little tug and pull as she tightened her grip in response to his movements, encouraging him to do more. Nicholas gently pinched and parted her nether lips, then dipped a finger into the heat between.

She was already sopping wet. Kitara whimpered as Nicholas coated his fingers in her sweet juices.

The heady scent of her arousal taunted him. He needed a taste. Nicholas pulled away from her delicious lips and met her lusty eyes. “Lie back.” It was an order, not a request, and one Kitara was more than willing to follow.

She relaxed back onto the mattress and spread her legs out in offering to him.

Nicholas shucked off his clothes and knelt before her reverently, as if praying to the gods for the bountiful feast that lay before him.

He slipped his hands under her thighs and lifted her legs up to pull her closer. He dragged in a long, slow breath, taking in every note of her sweet perfume before giving her a gentle lash of his tongue.

Her body jerked as his velvety tongue swirled across her engorged clit. He nibbled at it and sucked it hard into his mouth. Kitara couldn’t hold back her whimpering sobs, begging with each panting breath for more.

Nicholas continued his exploration. He delved between her folds, lapping up her juice like a cat with cream, savoring her sweet essence.

He could spend all day drinking from her fountain and enjoying the sounds of her pleasure. He traced every inch of her lips with his tongue as if mapping out every delectable inch of her.

Review: My Reluctant Warden by Kallysten

Title: My Reluctant Warden
Series: Ward Of The Vampire, Book 2
Author: Kallysten
Published: May 14, 2013
Format; Ebook provided for review
Tour: No

When her boss brought her to the party of the season, Mr. Ward’s birthday bash, Angelina thought she had slipped on Cinderella’s shoes.

Now that she is compelled to remain in the mansion, trapped with a host who was only pleasant to her in a shared fantasy, the dream abruptly turns sour.

Under other circumstances, she might enjoy staying in an opulent guest suite, with a butler waiting on her every desire. But her cage, as gilded as it may be, remains a prison, and her host, even if he wishes she were gone, is still her warden.

As she struggles to get used to the situation, she can’t figure out what to think of Morgan Ward, a man who claims to be a vampire, who at times ignores her and at times shows himself unexpectedly thoughtful. A man she’s attracted to despite her better judgment.

However, an unexpected conversation with her boss may give her no choice but to get much closer to Morgan than she’s ready for…

“Don’t leave without me, “ she’d said. “Not tonight. Not ever.”

Funny how much difference a simple statement like that can make. In Ward of the Vampire, we met all of our major players: Angelina, Morgan Ward, and Delilah. My Reluctant Warden is more focused on Morgan and Angelina. It takes place a few hours later. Angelina is pretty much a prisoner in the mansion. No more sunshine, or even moonlight. No grass or even outdoors. No running to the corner store…or anywhere. Reality is starting to set in.

I love the conspiratorial, and sometimes humorous, tone that Angelina takes with the reader. At times it’s like she is talking to us in hushed tones. At others its like her inner monologue is going. A bit more of her own personality comes out in this edition, and I like the girl. She tries to be good, to behave, to make the most of it – but something about Morgan. Ugh! He brings out the snark in this lady – and I love it!

Morgan, despite his cold and indifferent demeanor, is actually quite caring and compassionate. He definitely shows this by retrieving Angelina’s things and also providing a little impromptu shopping adventure for her. But aside from all of that, Angelina’s confusion laced with fear mixes with Morgan’s irritation and apprehension creating a volatile cocktail.

If you read the first book, you know that everything isn’t always as it seems. That also happens to be the case in this book, and I couldn’t have enjoyed it any more than if it were me in Angelina’s place! This is a page turner, for sure.

You know, I recently reviewed On The Edge by Kallysten. I got to read all 10 editions at once, no waiting. I didn’t realize how lucky I was then. Because now, as I wait for the next book out in this series of episodes, if you will, the wait will absolutely drive me mad!

I have to know – will Angelina get free? Will she fall for Morgan? Will Morgan fall for her? And just why is he being so standoffish? And what the fuck is going on with Delilah? That’s some wicked sense of humor she’s got there. I’ve got one piece of advice for dear Angelina – stay away from the computer!

Oh, and we also get to know Stephen, Morgan’s butler, a bit. He is quite the character, and I really feel there is more story there than we know just yet. His loyalty is unwaivering, and yet he is human. I need to know, what gives?

Are you getting in on this series? Better do so now, while there are only two out. You don’t want to catch yourself behind in this one!
