Review/Giveaway: Under The Covers by Rebecca Zanetti

Title: Under The Covers
Series: Maverick Montana #2
Author: Rebecca Zanetti
Published: May 2013, Entangled Brazen
Format: Ebook received for review

Opposites don’t attract. They ignite.

The small Montana town near the Kooskia reserve seemed like the perfect place for Juliet Montgomery to hide from her not-so-law-abiding family. But when her peace is shattered by a break-in and threatening phone calls, it’s clear someone back in New York knows where she is. It’s time to plan her getaway, and fast—but first, she needs to tie up a few loose ends. Namely, finding out exactly what the town’s sexy cowboy sheriff is hiding in his holster...

Sheriff Quinn Lodge has enough demons of his own to know when someone’s hiding something. Clearly, he needs to do a thorough investigation to uncover what’s beneath Juliet’s uptight, city-girl exterior—preferably one piece of clothing at a time. But when their chemistry goes from fizzy to full-on explosive, things start getting complicated. How can Juliet stay beneath the covers with Quinn, when doing so means blowing her cover?

In the beginning of Under The Covers, I was a bit confused. The first scene had me wondering what was happening, and I never really did figure it out for sure. But I do know that in the very first scene there was sexual heat and tension, begging to be unwrapped like the most sparkly present under the tree.

This is the story of Juliet and Quinn. Quinn has been asking Juliet out for quite some time, and when an opportunity arises to make her his pretend girlfriend, he jumps at the chance. This wasn’t something that was followed to closely through the story, which disappointed me a bit. However, it totally made up for it in sincere emotions between the two people that didn’t require a fake romance.

Juliet is a woman of secrets, and Quinn is determined to know her inside and out. I really loved his perseverance in getting that goal. When it was still at the point where I didn’t know what Juliet’s secrets were, I was hoping they were actually something substantial enough to require the lying she was doing. You’ll have to make that determination for yourself. All I can say is that her secrets come back to bite her, and it definitely leads to some tense moments.

While I wasn’t sure I was quite on board with this story in the beginning, it didn’t take long before I decided I was all in. I would have liked more detail, some more fleshing out of some certain scenes, but overall the pace was quick and the action was great – both in the bedroom and out. The characters that you are supposed to like, I did. And for the characters that you are supposed to not like, I really didn’t. Did that statement make sense? Haha. There were some really funny scenes, I thought. I especially liked one where Juliet is alone at Quinn’s house, and she gets some unexpected visitors. Trust me, you will definitely get a giggle out of it. And then there is the sexy....

“Juliet,” he drawled while carrying her through the room and up the stairs, “I have handcuffs.”

She breathed out a combination of heat and humor. “Sounds like a threat.”

“Oh no, darlin’.” He set her on the bed. “I don’t threaten. Ever.”

“Really? What was that statement?”

“A promise.” He unclasped his jeans and dropped them to the floor. “I’ll take a little teasing from you, beautiful. But you cross me? I’ll cuff you and make you beg.”

Ok, let’s talk about the heat. Quinn is a big man (in many ways...ahem). A big Native American man, of the Kooskia reserve. He’s the sheriff. And he is a bit dominating and controlling. Have I got your attention yet? I thought so. Yeah – me too. And then you have Juliet, an Irish woman with red hair, who is desperately trying to keep her secrets hidden, while trying to keep herself for falling for this man who she has obviously already fallen for. She gets this high society air about her when she gets defensive or secretive, and I thought it really was kind of funny at times - a nice injection of humor. But what I really liked is that Quinn saw right through it – every time. The man just gets her, and in getting her, he got me. There is nothing I love more than seeing a hero know for certain that his heroine is something special, and that he knows her in ways she doesn’t even know herself. And when these two get together you will see nothing less than fireworks.

If you are looking for a quick read, I absolutely recommend this. I hadn’t read the first book, and it had me a bit lost in the beginning. So you might want to pick that up. But if you decide to jump right into this story, I don’t think it would put you off too much. There are some really terrific secondary characters that I’m guessing will get their own books in the future, and I can’t wait for that. But as for this book, I’d definitely put it on your TBR.
