In the end of book one, The World Without End, Nurrin and Finn returned to the cave to find Collin, Nurrin's brother, gone - along with Dustin, her boyfriend. In The Horde Without End, we pick up right there, and Finn and Nurrin decide to find them. Their journey definitely takes them on what seems to feel like a wild goose chase at times, they seem to be one step behind them the whole way. My fear coming into The Horde Without End was that it just wouldn't live up to the awesomeness that was The World Without End. I'm happy to report it definitely lived up to the challenge!
ERI-Milan is mutating, and Nurrin and Finn are on a mission. They want to find Collin, but they are also trying to warn other Havens what's going on in the Wide Open. Told in an alternating POV, The Horde Without End takes us on a crazy journey from stop to stop.
Nurrin is definitely growing. She's becoming more fierce, a force within herself. But she is still young and very naive. Her stubborn side is just as big as Finn's, and it proves to be her downside more than once. I like the changes that are happening with her. She's getting used to Finn and how he acts in certain situations, while at the same time, she is finding herself. There's all kinds of tension between the two of them, and it's positively electrifying at times.
As for Finn, he is still full of mystery. Who is he really? What motivates him? We do get some peaks into his mind when it's his turn at the POV, with things like how he really feels about Nurrin. The question is, why in the world doesn't he tell her? In a world where the next day is not a promise, I would think you would take every opportunity to let people know how you feel about them. Perhaps that's a bit optimistic of me, though. People are still people, and Finn is still a hardheaded man. The good news is that by the end of the book, we do learn a substantial bit more about him. And some of the things we learned really blew me back!
If I had any complaint about this book, it would be that the actual zombie action was lacking. There just wasn't much of it at all. This book seems to focus more on the couple, more than the world itself. It actually worked out well for it, there was enough going on to definitely keep my interest peaked. But I still wish there was more zombie action.
Lastly, this book leaves us with a bit of a cliffhanger, just as the first book did. That's kind of hard to deal with. Like one thread gets tied up nice and clean, but a whole other rope just unraveled. It will definitely be a wait that feels like forever to me. I love this world that Nazarea Andrews has created, and I definitely want to see more of it.
