Thrash by JC Emery totally took me by surprise, and in the end, I found an emotional and exciting story that was a real page turner. This was my first motorcycle club romance, and I was so worried that it would be like a certain TV show a lot of us may watch. And yes, at the beginning, I saw some similarities, like, the very beginning. But then I put it into some perspective. When you are writing to a certain audience, you have to have certain elements. A sexy hero, a sexy heroine, something dangerous... so yes, Thrash definitely has all of those elements in spades. But that is where the similarities end. Furthermore, I didn’t read book one, Ride. I did look online to get a sort of Cliff’s Notes about it, just in case I needed any info.
Nicole is forced to play the role of single mom to her teenage brother, Jeremy, after their father is sent to prison. She’s getting by, but that’s about the best you can say. Jeremy is eating them out of house and home, and giving her an attitude to match that of any teenager. Nicole has a low wage job, and puts Jeremy first. What I liked about Nicole is that she’s not your stereotypical gorgeous heroine. Yes, she is beautiful. But she’s also got stick straight over processed hair; she’s too skinny because she doesn’t get to eat as much as her brother. She lives in a rundown house, drives a rundown car, and surviving is the goal. She’s also a Lost Girl, which pretty much is a club whore. But she’s had a thing for Duke since they were children, and didn’t realize that he had a thing for her right back.
Forsaken Men? You guys decide what you want and you’re all like fucking bulls in a china shop until you get it. But that’s because you’re a passionate group.
Duke… well, Duke is the big bad motorcycle guy in a club called Forsaken. He’s club Secretary, and he’s tough. Like, he is kill people tough. But underneath that very gruff exterior is the heart of a warrior and a lover. And he thinks this is the time to make a play for Nicole, even though their lives have not been easy or ideal. I loved Duke’s determination and the effort he puts into everything he does. There were times I felt he could have cleared up a lot of confusion if he would just talk more, but I think the pig-headed stubbornness worked well for him.
In Thrash there is some left over drama from book one that needs to be dealt with. I have a feeling it’s one of the main undercurrents through the whole series, or at least a couple books. But then Nicole has some drama of her own when her past comes knocking at her door. I really loved the danger level in this book, along with some high impact action, and sexy as hell heat. And let’s not even forget about the drama, because Thrash had that in spades. In the end, I feel everything went the way I wanted it to. In fact, as far as epilogues go, Thrash has one of those awesome ones that just make you so glad you read the book. Being my first motorcycle romance type book, I’m definitely glad I gave it a shot. The bikes definitely added a level of “bad boy” and sexy that I was eating up.
So will I keep up with this series? Absolutely. I think all of the characters are so dynamic and interesting. JC Emery did a great job with keeping me interested while keeping the whole storyline unique and entertaining.
