The Forever Girl - Rebecca Hamilton Review/Guest Post/Giveaway - Dark Mind Book Tours

Format: Ebook provided by tour for review

Synopsis
Sophia Parsons’ family has skeletons, but they aren’t in their graves...

Solving the mystery of an ancestor’s hanging might silence the clashing whispers in Sophia's mind, but the cult in her town and the supernaturals who secretly reside there are determined to silence her first.

As Sophia unknowingly crosses the line into an elemental world full of vampire-like creatures, shapeshifters, and supernatural grim reapers, she meets Charles, a man who becomes both lover and ally.

But can she trust him?

It’s not until someone nearly kills Sophia that she realizes the only way to unveil the source of her family's curse: abandon her faith or abandon her humanity. If she wants to survive, she must accept who she is, perform dark magic, and fight to the death for her freedom

~x~x~x~x~

What an interesting story!  This story took what we normally think of vampires and weres and flipped it on its back, bringing a few new and refreshing twists to the paranormal world.  Now we have the Cruor, which are a bit like vampires, and the Strigoi, which are a bit like weres, but so much more.  Think shapeshifter…with the ability to shift into….nah, read it for yourself!

Sophia Parsons is a 22 year old Wiccan who just inherited a house from her grandfather.  She’s only got a couple friends, due to some horrible things that have happened that have basically made her an outcast in the small town where she’s lived her whole life.  She also is hearing voices in her head, which would drive the sanest of people crazy – ya know?  By the way, let me mention here – you definitely need to watch the trailer for this.  I’ll include it below.  Its definitely one of the best trailers I’ve seen!

“He’s just a man.  A strange, ancient man – but still a man.”

Initiation - Imogen Rose - Giveaway/Excerpt/Review

For my stop on the tour I am featuring a review, an excerpt, and there is also a tour wide giveaway, so make sure you enter your information in the Rafflecopter below.  Please note that Fictional Candy will not be picking or announcing the winner

Author: Imogen Rose

Format: ebook provided by Bewitching Blog Tours for Review

From Goodreads:
Welcome to Bonfire Academy. Set in the foothills of the alpine mountains in St.Moritz, this exclusive private school caters to a special kind of student. Enter at your own risk... but if you are human, you may not want to enter at all.

This is part one of the prequel series (Bonfire Academy) in the Bonfire Chronicles. Book two, INTEGRATION, will be released summer 2012

~*~*~*~*~
As a book blogger I have a very hectic “book life”.  My “To Be Read” pile is enormous.  I wanted in this tour as soon as I saw it on the Bewitching Blog Tours site.  Then I got the book, and paid it no mind until it was time to read.  Then I opened it up on my kindle.  Over 400 pages! My first thought was “oh no, what have I got myself into???”  Seriously, I was worried.

And that was the most useless thought I’ve had in a very long time because – no joke – this book had me hooked from the very first page, and I barely put it down until I was finished.  Less than 24 hours later (which includes work, some sleep, and a bit of time with my daughter) and I was done.

So lets start, eh?  This is a super power / paranormal private school type book.  But that’s about where the similarities to any other private school book end.  Perhaps this book is YA, but it’s definitely on the higher end.  There is violence and swearing, and there is some steam, but not outright steam.  Got it?

Cordelia is a third year student at Bonfire Academy, which is an ultra posh paranormal prep school in Switzerland (interesting note – that’s where the author is from!). She isn’t required to attend this year, but she does so that she can focus on tennis a bit more.  Because demons have interests outside of being well, demonic.  That’s when Jagger, uber hot Student Council President fae, assigns her to a new student as a mentor.  It should be easy, since both girls are demonic princesses.  Yep, I told you it was an ultra posh school! The new student is Faustine, and she’s only 12.  But she is rare in the fact that she is half human.  The paranormal beings often procreate outside their own race, but hardly ever with us humans.

“My words were supposed to come out in a firm demonic growl, but instead, they slithered out in an unfortunate raspy whisper”

Then something happens between Jagger and Cordelia that is 1) totally unexpected, and 2) totally life changing.  And I loved every minute of it!!  If there is one thing I could wish for this book, or this series, is more Jagger and Cordelia!!  Of course, Cordelia has a boyfriend, Quinn, but who cares??  He is clearly not the one for her.  She needs to drop him like a hot demon potato and get with some hunky fae Student Council President action!

This book has a lot going on.  You’ve got vampires, weres, shifters, demons, fae and even more.  And here’s something great – they don’t all get along!  And this creates a ton of drama and mystery at school.  You expect that you can go to school and feel safe walking down the hallway, but at Bonfire, things are more than a little different!

Something else that I absolutely loved – when demons or shifters shift into their paranormal form, it doesn’t mean that they turn into some 7 foot beautiful demigod of a being. Nope.  Some of them are downright ugly and repulsive.  Perfect!!  It was surprise after surprise in this book, and I love how Imogen Rose has not only bent the rules, she’s downright broken and rewrote them.

Cordelia, that poor girl haha.  She really takes a beating in this book.  I hope the rest of her life doesn’t go on like her third year at Bonfire, because she’s spent so much time in the infirmary she should get a personal room there!  Anyhow, she is a wonderful character.  She has heart and a conscience, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a demon.

And there is a myriad of colorful characters to choose from.  Mysterious Jagger, helpful Quinn, naïve Faustine, mile a minute Martha, and Ryker – another mystery.  You will definitely not get bored reading this book, and I couldn’t recommend it any more than this!  Read it! Love it!  Come back here and tell me what you thought, cause I love to dish about my favorite books.  And that’s where this book is going, my favorites list!

Sizzling PR - Eve Langlais - C791 - Excerpt/Giveaway

Yay!  I get to feature Eve Langlais new book, C791, today and offer you a chance to win a copy!!  This is for people 18 and over - so if you are not over 18 do not proceed!

Machines aren’t supposed to feel, but this cyborg can’t help falling in love.
Assigned as a specimen collector for a captured cyborg, Chloe is intrigued by the machine disguised as a man. Kidnapped during his daring escape, he takes her on an erotic adventure and shows her that despite the chip in his brain, his humanity is not completely lost.
Formerly known as unit X109GI, Joe is on a quest to discover his origin. While he doesn’t find the answers he’s looking for, he does discover that affection and lust aren’t just for humans. But when it comes to a battle between logic and love, which side will the cybernetic organism--once a man--choose?
Evaluating his feelings will have to wait though, because the military isn’t done with Joe. When they threaten the one thing he wants above all else, he’ll discover something shocking that will rock the new cyborg nation—and fuel a desire for vengeance.

Excerpt (Adult Content Ahead):
The sight of Chloe and Seth so at ease with each other, and worse, touching each other set something off inside Joe, a combination of irrational anger sprinkled with a covetousness he’d not experienced but had heard of. Jealousy.
Whatever the name for the emotion, he found himself unable to halt it as he ripped Seth away from Chloe’s side and sent his fist into the grinning face. He maintained enough control to not beat his friend to a pulp — barely — but he couldn’t stop himself from slinging Chloe over his shoulder and stomping off to their room.
“What the heck was that about?” she exclaimed as she dangled down his back.
“You seem to have forgotten who you belong to.”
She didn’t say anything for a moment. “Are you jealous?”
“No.” Yes!
“It’s normal to feel that way. It just never occurred to me you would.”
“I don’t. Jealousy is a human emotion. I am a cyborg. We are above such petty wastes of our time.”
“Really. Well then, someone should probably explain that to Seth’s face,” she drawled.
“This is not entertaining. You were practically inviting him to take ownership of your body.”
“I was not,” she exclaimed, and a small rational part of him knew she spoke truly, but he’d lost the ability to decipher logic from madness where she was concerned.
Arriving at their room, he tossed her onto the bed and quickly tore at his clothes.
“What are you doing?” she asked, her eyes wide, but not with trepidation if the protruding nipples through her shirt were any indication.
“Showing you who owns your body.”
“Me.”
“Wrong answer,” he growled. “I do. And it seems I must show you.”
He fell on her, and despite her previous defiant answer, she welcomed him with open arms and a fierce kiss. Her legs spread wide to accommodate his body, but while he’d denuded his frame, she remained dressed. Their hands met at the closing to her pants, their impatient battle to remove them more of a fumbling parody. When he finally managed to strip them from her, he was ready to sink himself into her. He retained enough wits though to realize she required preparation for his penetration. With sex bots, that never proved a concern as they arrived to service pre-lubed. Human females however, according to his studies, required stimulation to achieve the same state. He slid a hand between her thighs and, to his relief, found her already soaking wet. It pleased him, on a level he did not understand, that Chloe achieved this state around him without means of manipulation.
He wasted no more time. He propped himself above her and thrust into her sex. Oh, the exquisite, unexplainable feel of her channel clamping tightly around his cock. He would never tire of it. Never tire of her. But did she feel the same about him? He had to know.
“Tell me who you belong to.”
Her eyes opened part way, her lids heavy with arousal. “Why do you care?”
He rammed into her hard. She gasped.
A growl left him. “Do not toy with me. You are my female. Not Seth’s. Not anyone else’s. Say you belong to me.” He almost roared the words, desperate to hear her say it.
For a moment defiance flashed in her gaze. “And if I don’t?”

Amazon Kindle

Hi Liz. Thanks so much for letting me stop by Fictional Candy on my Perpetual Light Blog Tour. I love your philosophy that fiction is like candy for the brain. I totally agree. And who doesn’t like candy?

Not me. I love candy. Fictional or otherwise. I thought today I’d compare my favorite type of romance with my favorite candy.

Paranormal romance is my favorite subgenre, although, I enjoy all the others to varying degrees. In terms of candy—I love chocolate. However, I enjoy all sweets, just not as much as chocolate. I’m just a bit of a paranormal fiend. Similarly, I’m a chocaholic. (I believe they say knowing is half the battle!)

I can resist a historical or a suspense or a regency or an inspirational, but if you throw in a paranormal element, I’m there. And, if that paranormality happens to be a vampire, I’m probably addicted, sitting in a state of awe that could easily be confused for a diabetic coma.

According to my Fictional Candy rating scale paranormal romance equals chocolate. I love chocolate. Chocolate anything. Truffles. Chocolate covered cherries, pretzels, nuts, fruit. Hot chocolate. Tea. Coffee, that makes mocha, doesn’t it? Ice cream. You get where I’m going, right? Hot fudge…

My absolute favorite chocolate is dark chocolate. Now, this isn’t just because it tastes better. Lord knows milk chocolate is amazing. But, in an effort to make some attempt to be health conscious I try to eat dark chocolate. You know, less fat, calories, whatever. And I’m pretty sure the Health Department advices women to eat it, every day. Who am I to disagree with that advice?

So, vampires being my absolute favorite paranormal creature are synonymous with dark chocolate.  Rich and dark, robust, yet smooth, possibly nutty or fruity, spicy or refreshingly minty. So many options. So many vampires. My mouth’s watering thinking about vampires and chocolate. Love them!

Well, that’s done it. I now need both dark chocolate and a vampire. I’m heading over to the TBR pile to grab a book and downstairs to my stash of chocolate covered cherries from Sweenor’s Chocolates. I’ll see you on the flipside of my coma!

But when I get back I want to know about your favorite subgenre and your favorite candy. And, I’m offering a $10 gift certificate to Harvard Sweet Boutique. You can’t beat their sweets. So leave me a comment for a chance to win. To increase your chances of winning connect with me via one or more of the social networks listed below.

Bird of Prey - Griffin Hayes

Title: Bird Of Prey

Format: Ebook won from Library Thing Giveaway

From Goodreads:
Nestled in the warm belly of the abandoned Keisel Steel Works, an ancient creature has begun to stir. A one-hundred-year cycle is drawing to a rapid close and with it the time when the beast must lead her newly hatched young to the feeding grounds.

A handful of the oldest folks in town remember that time well. A time when the sky was clotted with flapping, leathery wings and monsters driven mad by the smell of human blood. They also know of the feeding grounds. They know them as the backyards in which their kids play and the streets of the tiny Alaskan town they call home.

Buck Sanders didn’t know any of this the day he arrived at the steel works to pilfer a length of siding for the roof of his crumbling bar. And neither did his friend Tommy Hodgkins. But they are perhaps the only ones who can stop a curse that has been playing out for centuries. At stake is more than their lives. At stake is everything.

So as the synopsis says, Buck goes to the abandoned steel works to steal some siding to use on his leaky roof.  While there he cuts his hand pretty badly.  The scent of his blood brings about this giant…bird, wait no, moth, wait…man?  Who knows what it is, but it has a wingspan of like, nine feet.  He barely makes it away and gets back into town.

His friend Tommy says they will go back together, along with a couple others.  Allan, Tig, Tommy and Buck armor up and go after this thing.  Little do they know, the monster Buck fought off has a momma.  And she is much much larger.  Think a wingspan more like thirty feet!!

For such a short story there was some really vivid imagery within.  I completely felt like I was right on the outskirts of this little Alaskan town at an abandoned steel factory.  It felt cold and sparse, and quite eerie.  Then the Winter Moth shows its face, and it turns down right scary.

“We’re gonna need some help.  And guns, lots of guns.”

This was a great little horror story.  It quickened my pulse and the author really has a great way of explaining and painting the scenery for you.  There is a bit of gore and gross, so be prepared.  However it totally sets the scene for you, and completely lets you know – this is friggin serious!

I surely would recommend this to my friends who were into monster movies, those who liked a touch of horror into their fright.  I look forward to reading more from the author!

Redemption - Lindsey Gray

Title: Redemption
Author: Lindsey Gray

Format: ebook provided by author for review

From Goodreads:
Life is for living. Afterlife is a chance at redemption. As the only remaining female vampire in existence, Lily attempts to make her way towards her ever after. But with best friend Becca, new beau Ian, human husband Ryan, Archangel Peter, and a host of demons all standing in the way of Lily’s chance at a peaceful eternity, how can she possibly survive?

~*~*~*~*~

This was a pretty good story with a lot going on in a relatively short time span.  You definitely want to pay attention to what’s happening, and who is who.

The story starts off with an eerie scene.  There is a choice to be made, one person’s life over another’s.
Then we jump right to another place and we watch Lily hunting.  Lily is a vampire, but she doesn’t drink people, she is strictly on what the Cullen’s would call the vegetarian diet – animals only.  Lily is one of the last three remaining vampires on Earth.

Then we jump back in time just a smidge more, and learn how everything leads up to this point.  Lily and Ian, dating and in love.  The only problem is that Ian is a human, and he doesn’t know that she isn’t.   This causes her to make a drastic decision.

I found this book to be very enjoyable overall.  It had a fast pace and was well written.  Even though there are many characters and it takes place over several time periods with flashbacks and memories, I never once was confused about where or what was happening.   The characters were intriguing and charismatic.

There were a lot of different aspects to this book.  You are dealing with a wide assortment of paranormal beings.  There is everything from vampires, angels and demons to shadow walkers and more.  There are serial killers and just regular oxygen breathing, blood flowing human beings.   If I had any complaint at all, it would only be how easily everything was accepted when the truth about the paranormal aspect comes out.  Everybody in this book seemingly takes everything in stride.  I can’t say if that is how I would picture it happening, but I’ve not had anyone come out to me with their paranormal side….yet.

I almost dare say this book is more about Lily’s best friend Becca more than Lily herself.  There are several plot lines swirling around together.  They were all very interesting, and I think there will be a lot of questions that get answered in the next book, Revisited, due out this summer.

Bewitching Blog Tour: Allie's War by JC Andrijeski

Rook: Allie's War, Book One
By JC Andrijeski
Published By White Sun Press

28-year-old San Francisco native, Allie Taylor, at least thought she was human. But when she meets her first real seer, a race of human-like beings discovered in the 1900s, he tells her that not only is she a seer, like him, but that all the other seers believe she's going to end the world. Unfortunately, no matter what she does, everything that happens after that only seems to prove him right.

**********
EXCERPT
**********

I stared out the dirty window of the bottle-green Plymouth, watching trees and coast slide by. We were still on Highway 1, nearing where it merged with 101, not far from the Oregon border.
I hadn’t been on that stretch of road since I was a kid. What took minutes on Highway 5, or even 101 from San Francisco to Eureka, took hours along Highway 1, making the twisting two-lane road hugging the rocky coastline feel endless. But Revik wanted us off the main highway, at least until we crossed state lines. Even within seaside towns, he took side streets, avoiding the main “strips,” if they could be called that in towns that maybe had four bars, a salt-eaten motel, a greasy spoon, a church, a head shop and one drive-through coffee stand.
Somewhere near Fort Bragg, he uncuffed me from the door. I suppose I should’ve been grateful for that, but as my hands and ankles remained bound, my gratitude was limited. I watched the sun slink into the Pacific as pelicans skimmed by, beating long wingspans.
I felt him looking at me. When he didn’t stop after a few minutes, I exhaled sharply, facing him.
“What?”
He turned the wheel of the Plymouth, sliding behind the main street of another seaside village whose name I didn’t know. We passed a few bars and an auto shop. His pale eyes shone in the neon signs.
“We are low on gas. Can I trust you?”
“Dehgo...whatever your name is...”
“Revik.”
“Right. Are you going to tell me? What that guy meant about me ending the world?”
He exhaled. “Terian was trying to unbalance you. But it is true that they...” He amended, “...We believe you to be someone important.”
“Important how?”
“Allie, can I trust you, if I—”
“Revik, important how?”
Clicking to himself, he pulled into a nearby Arco station. Stopping in front of a pump, he turned off the ignition. When an attendant walked right up to the window, I realized with some surprise that we must be in Oregon. Revik rolled down the window, which stuck a few times. He gave me a last warning glance.
“Hey! Cool car, man! What can she do on the freeway...?”
The boy’s words trailed, just before his eyes filmed over.
Revik sat up to tug the clip from his back pocket, handing through a few bills of paper money. I noticed the attendant’s eyes didn’t look at me as he took the folded paper. They also didn’t glance at the rust-colored stains on Revik’s shirt, or the slash of the same on his pale neck.
“Revik...”
Frowning, he glanced at me, then at the rearview mirror. I watched as he licked his fingers, rubbing at the dark stain on his neck. Then he leaned over my lap and pulled open the glove box. Taking out an oil rag, he poured some water in it from a plastic bottle and rubbed it over his neck, erasing the mark completely.
“Revik, I’m hungry. I’m thirsty, too.”
Instead of answering, he handed me the half-full bottle.
I tilted it over my mouth, drinking.
His tone remained neutral. “Like I told you...historical periods have beginnings, middles and ends,” he said. “At the end, the dominant species has an opportunity to evolve...in several possible directions. We seers call these opportunities Displacements.” In the mirrors, he watched the boy hook the pump to the tank. His fingers gripped the wheel, green in the florescent light.
“…In some human mythology, this is called ‘Apocalypse.’ Do you know this word?”
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah. I might have heard it on one or two heavy metal albums.” I watched the blond kid in the dingy overalls enter the convenience store. He walked to one of the coolers in the back, pulled out a large bottle of water.
“...So you understand,” Revik said. “This will, of necessity, affect all of the species, not just humans. The elders have seen signs of the human displacement approaching. Some of these signs relate to developments in the natural world. Others have to do with—”
“Okay,” I said, still watching the boy. “...So you’re paranoid. What does any of that have to do with me?” I watched the blond kid pull two plastic-sealed sandwiches out of a cooler, two apples, a bag of chips...
“Burrito,” I blurted. “Get me a frozen burrito...he can throw it in the microwave, right?”
A hint of revulsion grew visible in the set of Revik’s mouth, but when I looked back at the store, the blond kid was stuffing a plastic-covered burrito into a industrial microwave and twisting the grease-covered dial. When I glanced over, Revik was watching me again, his eyes narrow.
He said, “The Bridge ushers in the Displacement. They are the catalyst. They are also what we call an intermediary being...one of the first. Historically, they gather three friends—”
“Let me guess...the four of us, we all ride horses, right?” I propped my cuffed hands on the armrest. “I do read, you know.”
I leaned my head on the glass. Glancing in the side mirror, I winced. I looked like I’d escaped from a mental hospital, then got beaten up and thrown in a dumpster.
I saw him watching me, eyes narrow.
“Trust me to attract crazies even among the seers,” I said. “...Jon will love this.”
Revik rolled down his window, accepting the receipt from the blond in the dirty coveralls. The blue and white patch on his breast labeled him “Jerry.” Jerry handed a paper bag through the window that Revik placed on my lap, where its warmth soaked through my waitressing uniform skirt.
“The Bridge is the catalyst,” Revik repeated, like I hadn’t spoken. “They have their place, like any of the intermediary beings.” He turned the key, and the GTX’s engine rumbled to life. “You need to understand your importance. Not in terms of ego, but of role. It is a responsibility, Allie.”
I looked up from the bag. “So, just to be clear. You're saying I am going to end the world...at least as we know it. And that this is a job that I should take seriously...and do really, really well.” I tilted my head at him. “Did I get that right?”
I watched him think. “Yes,” he said. “That is right. Simplistic, but ultimately correct.” Before I could speak, or even laugh, I saw his eyes click back into focus. “You will meet Vash. Then you will understand.”
“Did you just read my mind?” I said.
“Yes.”
“Is that absolutely fucking necessary?” I said.
He thought about this also, glancing at me.
“Yes,” he said.
