Interview/Giveaway: Kristin with Book Sniffers Anonymous

I interview a lot of authors, we all do.  And it is really a lot of fun, right?  But who is it behind those interviews?  You!!!  So now I want to interview you! This post will run every Thursday (give or take a day due to scheduling) as long as I have people who want to be interviewed!  Check out the tab up there in my tab index for this feature.  That's where you can check out past interviews and upcoming interviews!

Today I have Kristin from Book Sniffers Anonymous along with a $5 gift card prize!  Prize is international as long as you can accept a gift card from your choice of Amazon or B&N!

*******
Kristinnnnnnnn, yoooooohoooooo!!!  Helloooooo, come on over!   How are you doing today?!
WOOOHOOO (≧∇≦)/ Thanks for having me, Liz. I'm excited to be stopping by. It's my first interview *blushes* It feels so
Photobucket

weird being on the other side.

So Kristin, you run Book Sniffers Anonymous.  How did you come up with this incredibly awesome name?
Well it wasn't my first choice to be honest. It all started at my last base (my husband's in the Marine Corp). There was a group of us wives who decided that we would keep in touch via a book club. We were tossing around names on what we could call our book club and came up with two possibilities. Well when we all separated, the book club fell through and when I decided to start the blog, the two names were already taken, so I just combined the two and voila! I'm really happy that it worked out this way because I couldn't imaging the blog being called anything else.

You have a really elegant design on your website!  Who designed it?
Thank you, I will make sure to tell my co-blogger/best friend, Marissa that you said so. I wanted something lighter and more fun than what I initially threw together when I started the blog. Initially I wanted one of those cool avatars that everyone seems to have but the blog is called "anonymous" after all. So Marissa and I put our heads together and I sent a few sample photos to Marissa with what I wanted and she came up with the logo. She even incorporated my favorite color, lime green into it. The website itself was something that I threw together. It took me maybe a week or two of messing around with it until I got it to look the way I wanted it to.

I see you also run a food blog.  How incredibly fun!!!  Can you tell us about that site?
Well Holy Cannoli Recipes started years ago when I was at my last base. Moving around a lot in the military
Photobucket
forces you to start over and make new friends and I will admit that I'm a really shy person in real life. So I spent a lot of time at home trying new recipes and posting them on Facebook. Marissa suggested I create a blog to post my recipes on since my friends and family were asking for the recipes. (She actually made the button and header for HCR as well) The name actually is a childhood saying of mine. I got in a lot of trouble as a kid for saying things that I probably shouldn't have. So I learned to alter the "holy crap!" into "holy cannoli!" thus saving myself a scolding and a spanking from my parents. Don't ask me what made me think of this when I was trying to think up a name but it popped in my head and I went with it.

And how in the world do you manage to run TWO blogs?  Do you have a clone?
HaHa I wish! I will admit that since starting Book Sniffers Anonymous, Holy Cannoli Recipes has fallen to the wayside. I still do food/product reviews and post recipes but not nearly as often as I used to. It's kind of hard to want to spend all day in the kitchen making various recipes because not only are certain ingredients hard to find out here in the desert, so I don't really make crazy recipes anymore. Not to mention that when I come home from work, the last thing I want to do is hover over the stove, so I end up throwing something simple together like burgers or fried rice. Not anything really blog worthy. LoL

What would you do if print books ceased to exist?  Could you be happy with just ebooks that don’t usually smell?
You do know that brand new e-readers have a smell too? LoL No seriously they do! When I got my new e-reader a friend of mine asked if I had sniffed it yet and being who I am *challenge accepted* I sniffed it, and it had a smell! Now of course after a day it didn't have that new plasticy smell but I suppose I could always go to Barnes & Noble and ask to sniff the new Nooks. HaHa Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Do you have a favorite candy? (ok, I’m asking this because I’m totally munching on my favorite candy – candy corn – in January)
psssst. I have a cat names Snickers. (^_-)   If there is a Snickers bar in a 50ft radius, I will eat it. I love Snickers bars.

I see in your about me section that you work in a National Park.  I swear, I am envying you more and more! How does a regular day go for you?
I'm kind of the front desk girl at the visitor center. I run the gift shop at headquarters (there are 3 other visitor centers for the park), so I sell merchandise but I also hand out maps for the park and give the visitors a game plan for their time out here, answer phone calls from visitors who are planning to come out and I get to harass the rangers all day. I get to not only meet a lot of people from all over the world like Germany, Scotland and Asia but I've come across a lot of people from my hometown in Syracuse, NY which is by far the coolest for me. I never thought that people from all over would flock to the desert but it's really surreal and the Joshua trees are something out of a Harry Potter book, so I totally see the appeal.

And what do you do when you aren’t blogging or parking….err, you know what I mean.
Parking... HaHa I like it! Honestly, that's kind of all I do. I'm either reading, blogging or I'm at work. I wish I could say that I do something cool on my days off but nope, you can more times than not find me reading.

If you were given a choice of Disney princesses to be, who would you choose – and why?
Image rights to Sakimichan/DeviantArt
Hm... as a kid I loved Pocahontas. I loved that movie so much as a kid that for my elementary school oral report I chose her. Little did I know that Disney had the story all wrong. I remember going all out and making a costume and preparing my speech with my grandfather. He quizzed me so that I would be prepared to answer questions and he asked "Where was Pocahontas born?" and my response was "Syracuse."  My mom still doesn't let me live that one down.

Do you have any books that you constantly find yourself recommending?
I recommend books based on the person but I have recommended books to family and friends and in most cases I just buy the books for them. LoL I guess I'm pushy like that. I bought my sister The Hunger Games last year for her birthday. She had no idea what it was about going into the story but she wound up loving them and my niece wound up reading them too.

And what do you think is the best thing about blogging?
Chatting with with authors and other bloggers. The food blogging world has nothing on the book community. I've talked to more people in the year I've been book blogging than in the 4 yrs that I've had my food blog running. Never in a million years, had thought I'd talk to authors who's books I've read and own.

Ok, that’s it!  Not too hard, right?  Thanks for coming by, it was fun to chat with you!
Nah... it was fun *wipes sweat off forehead* HaHa Thanks so much for having me. It really was a blast.

Today I have Tobi from Forget The  Housework, I'm Reading... along with a $5 gift card prize!  Prize is international as long as you can accept a gift card from your choice of Amazon or B&N!

********************************

Hey Tobi!! How’s it going? Thanks for joining me today!
Thanks so much for having me!

For the readers out there who may not have heard of your blog, can you tell us a little bit about Forget The Housework, I’m Reading?
It's a blog where I'm the main reviewer but it's open to other mom's who love to read and would like to post a review. My ratings are based on distraction from housework etc....... I use Laundry baskets

What do you think is the most awesome thing about being a book blogger…..and what is the worse-tastic thing? Yes, I’m allowed to make up words.
BEST would be meeting all the amazing people! Authors other bloggers and readers. I LOVE it!
Worse-tastic......I guess when I get behind. I hate that but you know life happens and my readers are COMPLETELY forgiving. I explain what's going on. I'm a totally open book!

And what does Ms. Tobi do when she isn’t blogging?
I'm taking care of my amazing 3 boys ages 5 and twin 2 year olds. That and I work in retail pt nights and weekends and also have an online job.

Now Tobi, I rule the world. I’ve put you into a white room with no windows and no doors. What book sits on the table?
Oh man! That's a toughie! Just one?????
Is there a Harry Potter omnibus?
That or ANY book by Tonya Kappes. Her books are my go to feel good books when I just need something wonderful and sweet but a little mystery.

Ok, let me dial it back a bit before every one thinks I might be losing it. Do you participate in memes or tours? Do you have any favorites that you can share with us?
No memes. I haven't quite figured those out yet.
I do participate in some tours, not many but some.
I participate in several companies IO book tours and ABG I like those and Reader's Addiction Blog tours

Is there any book (or series) that you just wish would be made into a movie?
A ton really.
A Magical Cure Series by Tonya Kappes (addicted yes I know but seriously if you LOVE Cozy Mysteries you need to check out her books! <3 o:p="o:p">

Dancing Naked in Dixie by Lauren Clark
Deadly Trilogy by Alexa Grace
OhOHOH! The ReVamped, ReAwakened by Ada Adams
Man, we could be here forever so I'll leave it with those.....LOL

And are you an ereader girl or a print book girl?
BOTH! I love my eBooks! They're affordable for the most part. However, if an eBook is the same price or more than the print I'm all print baby! LOL I refuse to pay more than $7.99 for an eBook. So, then I would definitely by print.
As far as print I LOVE the smell of books and I love having signed copies. My collection is slowly growing.

Now that you’ve been blogging for a bit, do you have any advice for newbies?
If there's a book you want to read contact the author check their blog page and see how to request a copy. Some will say yes some will say no and some will send you to their publisher. It NEVER hurts to ask. Usually on their contact page they tell you how they would like you to do this.

Make friends with other bloggers! I was lucky enough to meet you and a few others that have given me great tips and helped me along the way. Thank you to you and the others! (Awww! Thanks!)

I just gave you a book. You hated it. What do you do?
I'll write a review. That's how I started! I had a book and it aggravated the poop out of me had so much potential but ended too easily. So, I started a blog. If I don't like it I always try to put a positive spin on it somehow. Like, with this particular book I believe I said had a great story line but forgiveness came to easy. Does that make sense?

Tobi, inquiring minds want to know: What is your favorite social media outlet, and why?
I LOVE Facebook. I can follow and interact with other bloggers in groups and also authors on their pages etc........
I like twitter but it's harder to follow sometimes.

And lastly, can you share a little tidbit from a current read?
So, the day I'm answering this I honestly can't. I'll tell you it's a fun read. But it's a Secret Agent P matter and the author and publisher might kill me if I say much more! ;)

Thanks Tobi!! It’s been a blast having you over to my place for a bit J Don’t be a stranger!
Thanks for having me! I've had fun! I'd love to come back anytime you have a spot! <3 o:p="o:p">

Blogger on Blogger Interview: Rachel at Beauty and the Bookshelf

I interview a lot of authors, we all do.  And it is really a lot of fun, right?  But who is it behind those interviews?  You!!!  So now I want to interview you! This post will run every Thursday (give or take a day due to scheduling) as long as I have people who want to be interviewed!  Check out the tab up there in my tab index for this feature.  That's where you can check out past interviews, upcoming bloggers, and sign up for your own interview! :)

Today I have Rachel from Beauty and the Bookshelf along with a $5 gift card prize!  Prize is international as long as you can accept a gift card from your choice of Amazon or B&N!

********************************

Hi Rachel! Thanks for coming by today! Can you tell us a little bit about your site, Beauty and the Bookshelf?
Hi, Liz! Thanks for having me! I started Beauty and the Bookshelf a couple of years ago, during my senior year of high school. Then it was called For the Love of Reading, and I was going to use it to talk about my senior project, which was a book signing going by the same name. The blog became abandoned until I decided—I don’t know when or why—that I’d use it to review books and interview authors. I love books (duh) and Beauty and the Beast, so Beauty and the Bookshelf was born!

And when I checked your site, it had (has!) a wonderful Christmas theme going on!  I loved it!  Do you design your own blog, or do you have someone else do it? (And if so, who?)
Thanks! I’m really liking the Christmas theme! I’d like to say that I come up with my designs, but I totally don’t. I tried doing HTML once and it was like reading another language; it was complete gibberish and I was so lost. Since I can’t make my own (not yet, anyway) I use premade templates. My Christmas theme comes from Leelou blogs, and my normal template comes from The Cutest Blog on the Block.

I see on your site that you only review print copies, and not ebooks.  So how come print won out in the war with eBooks with you?
I’m just not a fan of ebooks. (Although I have two Kindles; long story.) I like my books to be real and physical. I like being able to turn pages, feeling the paper between my fingers. I like that I have three bookshelves full of books and will soon need a fourth. I like—no, love—it all. I don’t want to put my books on an ereader that can easily be damaged or stolen, and something that could be not-so-popular in ten, twenty, thirty years.  I want my books to last, and I want to have them forever. I hate that there are novellas that I want to read that are ebook only; it’s just so frustrating. I’ve tried reading books on my Kindles, and it’s just not the same. In the end, I’m just a print person.

And you also state that you only review YA books.  What is it about YA that attracts you?
YA is just my genre. Most books below it are too immature, and most above it are too mature. I like that YA pushes the boundaries but doesn’t (usually) go over the line. The characters are around my age, making them more relatable. And the stories are just…right. I usually avoid books that aren’t YA because I don’t think I’ll like them; they have elements that aren’t YA, elements that I’m not used to. I don’t really know how to explain it; I just prefer YA. Oh, and the boys—I love the YA boys.

Is there any genre that you definitely won’t read or review?
I’m horrible at classifying what genre a book is. I just like to read books that I think I’ll like; I also like to stay in my comfort zone. I don’t usually read a book without reading its synopsis and/or reviews; if I think it contains something I won’t like, I probably won’t read it. I can be quite picky.

So what’s life like for you outside of Beauty and the Bookshelf?
Oh, you know—it’s life. Fall Quarter just ended (thank gosh!) and I have two finals left.  (I’m planning on earning my degree in something that has to do with writing, and possibly zoology.) Then I’m off for about a month, which gives me time to do a ton of things. I can read more, sleep more, get caught up on everything, celebrate the holidays, and sleep some more. Although the catching up never really happens. (My middle name is procrastination.) And I hope to start writing soon;  I have some characters and ideas brewing in my head that would like to be written down. And I’ll probably hang with my pets: a cat named Big Kitty, a cat named O’hara, a hedgehog named Odair (yes, after Finnick, my love), and my siblings’ sheep and pigs!

And since you love Disney, I just have to ask – which Disney princess would you be if you could pick only one?
Belle! Easiest question ever!

But then, if you had to be a Disney villain, which one would you be then?
This is not the easiest question ever. I think I’d be Maleficent; she’s pretty evil. And she turns into a dragon. (I triple dog dare you to try and slay me.)

Rachel, what kind of things do you have planned for Beauty and the Bookshelf in the future?
This is an interesting question, because I don’t really know. I hope to just continue blogging and doing what I do.

What book are you reading now, and can you share a teaser about it?  Maybe the blurb or a favorite quote?
I just finished Matched by Ally Condie and am moving on to Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion. I haven’t started it yet, so I’m just going to open it to a random page (154, where the library receipt was) and share. . . *looks at page*. . . the last paragraph. It’s more interesting.

I stand in front of the grave, staring at the name on the stone. A queasy sensation of vertigo rises through my legs, as if a vast pit is opening up in front of me, drawing me toward its edge with some dark, inexorable force. My stomach lurches again, I feel a sharp tug on my brainstem. . . I fall in.

Note: I was just looking at the chapter markings/headers/whatever-you-call-thems, and they’re all different parts of the body, skeletal, muscular, etc. SO COOL.

Is there any particular book you would absolutely recommend to someone?
I’m going to cheat and recommend a book and a book series.

Book: Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson. I keep thinking about this book, which I like to say simultaneously ripped my heart out (and smashes it to pieces) and kept it beating in place. I feel like this book is underrated, when really everyone should read it. It’s so, so good. I need to change my review of it—my thoughts on the book have blossomed into something more over time. READ IT.

Series: The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine. This is one of my absolute favorite series, and I just love everything about it. There are currently thirteen books, and if things go as planned, book fifteen will be the last. That is also when I need the world’s largest supply of tissue.

You mentioned the Mayan end of the calendar during our emails, and mentioned being a bit nervous about it.  I’m sure many of us are! This interview will be published the day before, so what are your plans for the day after – December 21, 2012?
I will be following my mother around like a duck follow its mother. I will probably get no sleep, and I’ll cuddle up in a corner somewhere. I’m not saying I believe it; I’m just a very, very paranoid person.

We will end today with a favorites list:

Drink? Water! (I don’t drink pop, and I rarely have coffee.)
Food? ALL OF IT. (Except for what I don’t like. I can’t think of a favorite! Although I do like Tobasco sauce. And cheese.)
Movie? Beauty and the Beast.
Social Media Outlet? Probably Twitter.
Candy? When I’m being gifted: Reeses. When I buy it at the store: Snickers. (Reeses are just so small!)

Thanks so much, Rachel, for meeting with me today!
Thanks again for having me!
