Orissa Penwell is the main character in my Contagium Series. She has extensive training and knows how to survive. From skills in hunting and skinning a deer to her knowledge of firearms, she is definitely someone I’d want on my side if crap hit the fan. Throughout the books Orissa uses a variety of weapons. She’s no stranger to improvising, since that seems to happen in the Zom-Poc, but she definitely has her favorites. One of her preferred weapons is the compound bow, not to be confused with a long bow. She seems like a natural, which stems from years and years of practice and training.
“How long have you been doing archery?” Hannah asked. I sighed in relief that she had changed the subject.
“Close to twenty years,” I said. “My grandpa was into hunting and learning survival skills so he started me young.”
As a child, Orissa was active in competitive shooting sports (a little known fact that isn’t revealed until the last book!), which helps her preform well under pressure. Another weapon she likes to have handy is her Beretta M9. A standard military issued handgun, the M9 is a tried and true weapon that Orissa is familiar with. When that’s not around, she will gladly use her Smith and Wesson 1911, a similar gun to the M9. But don’t ask her which she thinks is better unless you have time to discuss which weapon has the smoother slide or lighter recoil. When weapons aren’t available, Orissa isn’t afraid of a little hand to hand combat.

Encouraged by her grandfather (who made sure she was well trained with defending herself), Orissa spent many years studying marital arts and learning how to protect her body from others. While zombies and crazies cannot feel pain, being able to render an attacker useless is a skill all women should possess. Besides her skills with firearms and martial arts, Orissa has one other weapon that has kept her safe more than the others combined. It is a weapon she can rely on, one that always has her back. Hayden Underwood. The brave, daring Marine possesses the same skills in weaponry and combat that his counterpart Orissa has. But Hayden offers something more: companionship, friendship, possibly love, even, and someone for Orissa to turn to whenever she needs him. No matter how well armed you are, having friends you can count on is what will keep you going.
