Interview with Madeline Sheehan and Claire C Riley, authors of Thicker Than Blood

Thicker Than Blood
Claire C Riley
Madeline Sheehan

A true friendship never dies.

Leisel and Evelyn lost everything. Husbands. Families. Friends. Lives that made sense. All they had left was each other, and a friendship that could withstand anything…

Even an apocalypse.

Until one fateful night, the marginal safety they’d come to rely on comes to a vicious and brutal end. With the help of Alex & Jami, both unlikely allies, Leisel and Evelyn are able to escape their shattered sanctuary only to find themselves face-to-face with a much altered, much crueler life where they have to find the way—and the will—to stay alive in a world they no longer recognize.

Traveling across a broken and infection-ridden country; the road-weary group are pitted against endless violence, improbable circumstances, and the ultimate loss.
Everything comes at a price—especially safety, the cost of which could very well strip them of the one thing they’ve tried so hard to cling to: their humanity.

Yet along with all the trials they’re forced to endure, there’s also hope in the form of love. Having loved Leisel from afar, Alex attempts to put the pieces of her fractured heart back together.

But in such a savage world, is there room for love?

In a place of nightmares-made-reality, where the living should be feared far more than the dead, an unbreakable friendship and a love amongst all odds can mean the difference between life and death.

There are friends…

And then there are Leisel and Evelyn.

A few weeks ago I reviewed zombie apocalypse horror novel, Thicker Than Blood, and it was so much more than just zombies and kicking ass.  It explored the friendship of two women that was, well, Thicker Than Blood.  It was a fantastic book, and I highly suggest you read it.  Today I have a mini interview I did with both authors, so I hope you enjoy that!!

Interview
*****

What was it like working together, compared to working separately?

CCR - It can get lonely working on your own, being trapped inside your own mind with only your characters for company. Working with someone else, for me anyway, I found a really enjoyable experience, and much easier than I thought it would be. Having someone to discuss issues with and bounce ideas off made things flow so much quicker than normal.

MS – Everything Claire said! I’m a fairly slow writer. I tend to rewrite and rework until my fingers are bleeding. But co-writing took away the step of second guessing. In the end, I absolutely loved working with Claire, every bit as much as I love creating a world and the people within it on my own.

Which are your personal favorite characters, each? And why?

CCR- Jami and E. What can I say? I’m a sucker for bad boys. And they both were, in their own ways.

MS – Eagle and Liv. I like darker characters, delving deep into their psyches, exploring why they’ve become so twisted and jaded. In my opinion, they’re usually the most colorful.

(Eagle was a BIG hit with me too!)

I took the quiz to find out who I would be in Thicker Than Blood (Alex). Who are each of you?

CCR- I got Evelyn, which didn’t surprise me. I see a lot of myself in her character. Trying to be strong for everybody when I feel anything but. Plus, I’m fiercely loyal and very independent.

MS – I got Evelyn as well, which didn’t surprise me either.

Did you learn anything about each other that you didn't know previously (like weird quirks or funny stories?)

CCR- Madeline is my little firecracker, and always kept me on my toes! Ha ha. We would be hard at work writing, plot nailed down, characters worked out, and then she’d be all like ‘Ummm, so I was thinking, what about this?” and she’d come up with an idea that was totally brilliant, but would mean we had to change the plot!

MS – Claire keeps me on track, she’s a hard worker, and doesn’t get easily sidetracked like I  (shamefully) admit I do. My brain is comparable to an overcrowded train station, a million stories pushing and shoving and wanting to be told. Working with Claire helped me focus on the ONE story I was supposed to be telling.

Are you going to survive the apocalypse?

CCR - I think if I could make it through the first few weeks when everything was going insane, then yes, I would. I’m good at dealing with problems, and like Evelyn, I just get on with whatever problems arise. BUT, I’ve never shot a gun, swung a sword, or fought to the death…obviously…

MS – I would like to think I would, but in all honestly I doubt I could do it on my own. I would need all the help I could get. Hopefully Claire will cross the ocean and come find me if the end of days ever do occur, and talk me out of the closet I’ll be hiding inside of. :D
