I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside was full of sin, and the first night I escape, I find out it’s true. Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me. He makes me his own girl.
My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am.
That’s the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play. And it’s terrifying, even for me. Because the only thing darker than my past is his.
You all know I love Skye Warren. I do. No way around it. Pretty When You Cry continues the Stripped series, and brings another new dimension to the men and women at The Grand.
It's one thing to gush over a book. "It's so hot" "I love the characters" and, "Hey, remember that one time..." But that's why I like it dark, not everyone understands it or can go there. Especially Skye's dark. She opens up this door, and instead of the light coming through, the darkness floods in and it's beautiful. This is an author who isn't striving just to titillate, but one who truly understands the words she writes. That's what makes every book I've read from Skye Warren an unforgettable experience and not just a story.
Ivan and Candy met on accident. See, she lived in a place that was pretty much a religious cult. Women were property with no choice in their lives. Candy knew there was more out there for her. So in a true testament to bravery, she left. She ran. She met Ivan. Ivan took her in, protected her, and in time, gave her employment at The Grand. For years he didn't touch her, yet they still had this highly sexually tension filled relationship. Ivan and Candy found themselves in the permanent role of Daddy and his little one. Some people might not be able to handle that level of fetish, but I ate up every page.
Ivan is controlling, and Candy has been conditioned to listen since she was a child. She offers him obedience, or sometimes disobedience, because not only does she feel very strongly for him, but his power speaks to her on a base level. But much like her former home, Candy begins to feel the need to run. And she tries, over and over. But that's the beauty of Ivan. He knows her so well, and he is one step ahead at all times.
"I want you to call me Daddy because I want you to know that when we're together, I'm the only one who can tell you what to do. And I will always do what's best for you, even if you don't like it. I will always give you what you need."
This story doesn't revolve around sex. There isn't a sex scene every other page. But the tension slowly builds and builds, like a balloon that is blown up past it's point of no return, and it bursts. I love this series so much. Every couple is different. Ivan has secrets, and Candy has secrets, and it's their secrets that ultimately bring them closer. Their connection is fierce, and you finish this book having no doubt of their love.
Skye Warren is the New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author of dark romantic fiction. Her books are raw, sexual and perversely romantic.
