Devil's Game was HOT! (Joanna Wylde)

Title: Devil's Game
Series: Reapers MC #3
Author: Joanna Wylde
Published: June 3, 2014 - Penguin Berkley
Format: NetGalley - Thank you PB!

Liam “Hunter” Blake hates the Reapers MC. Born and raised a Devil’s Jack, he knows his duty. He’ll defend his club from their oldest enemies—the Reapers—using whatever weapons he can find. But why use force when the Reapers’ president has a daughter who’s alone and vulnerable? Hunter has wanted her from the minute he saw her, and now he has an excuse to take her.

Em has lived her entire life in the shadow of the Reapers. Her overprotective father, Picnic, is the club’s president. The last time she had a boyfriend, Picnic shot him. Now the men in her life are far more interested in keeping her daddy happy than showing her a good time. Then she meets a handsome stranger—a man who isn't afraid to treat her like a real woman. One who isn't afraid of her father. His name is Liam, and he’s The One.

Or so she thinks.

When I saw this was the third book in the series, I had some reservations.  If you are a fan of this series, you know its about the Reapers MC, right?  And they are beyond awesome.  I read the first two books (out of order) and I loved Horse and Ruger infinitely.  But now... the third book is about someone from the rival club, Devil's Jacks?  I wasn't sure how it was going to go, seriously.  I already swore my allegiance to the Reapers!!

So the thing about this book, and it confused me for a quick moment - the first 40% of it runs in a concurrent timeline with Reaper's Legacy.  Because while all this other stuff is happening with Sophie and Ruger in Reaper's Legacy, the things happen with Liam and Em in Devil's Jacks - and then the kidnapping happens. It's not really a spoiler, because it totally happened in book two - we just get Em and Liam's perspective in this one - and it ROCKED.

I was determined not to like Liam! Seriously, I was like, no way.  I mean, just like Em, I had an attraction to him in the previous book.  He was dark and wild, and very dangerous. In this book Liam showed himself oh-so-very well.  The man, he's kind of hard to pin down.  He had a horrible childhood, and only came away with his foster sister, Kelsey, and the Devil's Jacks.  But now Em is in his life, and she's consuming him without even trying.  I loved how no matter what happened, he was still thinking of her first.   The man might be in a different mc, but he is every bit the alpha, caring, and fantastic man that the Reapers are.

I'd just incredible, indescribable sex with the hottest guy I'd ever met - and I was still a fucking virgin.
Jesus.  Just like highschool.
I couldn't give this shit away.

As for Em... man, this girl is stuck between a rock and a hard place.  She's basically the pristine princess to the Reapers. And here she falls for Liam, who is very much set to move up in the ranks in the Devil's Jacks.  So what do you do?  Do you choose your heart or your family?  I really did not envy this girl!!  But all in all, Em showed herself to be far more intelligent, resilient, and strong than anyone gave her credit for.  She is completely an alpha female, and I would love to see how she develops as she gets into her 30s and 40s. She is that awesome.

So, as it was in Reapers Legacy, both the Reapers and the Devil's Jacks are looking toward a truce.  The fighting over nothing is getting old, and they have a common enemy - the cartel.  But the truce is hanging on by a thread when things start to go south for both clubs.  And it seems the cartel is very determined to get their foothold into their territories.  There is a bit of push and pull where all of this is involved.  You've got three groups of people, all vying for the same thing - there's bound to be some bloodshed.  And Joanna Wylde does the action fantastically in this book.  Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat during some of it, it was so exciting!

This book had some very dramatic moments, especially where Em and Liam are concerned.  It's very much a Romeo & Juliet type of situation, and it was fascinating to watch.  The heat (OMG, the HEAT!), the devotion, the planning, the fear, the need... it was perfect.  This book moved fast and it was every bit the page turner and the two books before it.

In the end, I loved how everything played out.  Liam made me love him, although I'm not completely sold on the rest of the Jacks. Em really grew up in this book, and she definitely held her own as the heroine.  I do think that this book had a bit more of a New Adult feel to it, but it works since Em is college aged.  Of course, you get to see the rest of the Reapers that you already began to love in Reaper's Property and Reaper's Legacy.  Plus, at the end, we get a sneak peek into the lead in for Reaper's Stand, which is Picnic and London's book.  I'm totally interested to see how that plays out, since Picnic is Em's father, and not exactly a young man.  It should be very interesting!
