Excerpt/Giveaway: Illicit Desire by Tina Donahue

Illicit Desire
Outlawed Realm
Tina Donahue

Once a sex slave marked for termination, Lukan was miraculously liberated from E4’s Pleasure Palace, where E2’s fine, upstanding rulers secretly indulge their cravings for every imaginable vice. But freedom is not enough.

He left his heart behind with Arez. Within her fragrant, heated caress, he knew everything denied him. Rapture, contentment, tenderness…and love. Desperate to have her back in his arms, he embarks on a dangerous mission to deliver his untamed temptress from the certain death she does not know awaits her.

Within her velvet cage Arez knew only carnal submission and loneliness—until Lukan. But he has disappeared, and she senses something different in the way the supreme ruler is using her. Then, as if Lukan felt her longing for his strong arms and fevered kisses, he is there to sweep her from this twilight dimension to another.

But true freedom lies just out of his grasp. To reach the last portal—and their destiny—Lukan and Arez must first outwit an army of predators that hunt them. Human, subhuman…and monsters.

It was taking too much time.

Day after day, Lukan came to Regina’s house, expecting Nikoli to give him the finished device, prepared to force him to do so if need be. For two weeks, the man had offered nothing but excuses. Nikoli kept asking Damir and Meelo for more materials, many of which he’d never used before. Endlessly, they discussed what he should do to make the instrument as effective as possible. They insisted it was so Lukan would come to no harm, all while he knew Arez was inching closer to death. Lukan couldn’t stand it any longer. He circled Regina’s dining room table, agitation and worry over Arez’s safety forcing him to pace. Last night, when exhaustion finally allowed him to sleep, he’d dreamt of Arez, shackled and caged as always, naked and surprised at his return.

Her lips parted as he drew closer to her, wanting to touch her again, needing her caress as much as she required his. Lukan’s slumbering mind expected her to ask him a flood of questions, demanding to know where he’d been, why it had taken him so long to return.

Instead, she whispered, “What are you doing here? Who are you?”

His belly twisted. So much time had passed, surely she’d forgotten about him. If not, then she hated him for abandoning her to Vakar. Or she was already dead.

Abruptly, he stopped, his legs going weak, his head swimming.

“Lukan.” Damir pushed out of her chair and went to him.

He swung his hand out, keeping her away. A long time ago, he’d wanted the concern and love she now showed, and received neither. It was too late to return to that earlier time. Only Arez could give him all that he still hungered for.

“Here,” Regina said, hurrying from the kitchen. She took the empty jar of peanut butter from him and delivered a full container, no doubt believing a lack of food had caused his dizziness rather than heartache over Arez. “Eat all you want,” Regina assured. “We have plenty.”

Her kindness tonight was in stark contrast to the first days he’d come here. Then, Lukan had felt Regina staring as he ate hurriedly, grabbing whatever food he could from her table, unable to help himself. Always he feared there wouldn’t be enough, or she’d snatch the meal from him as the guards had done in the Pleasure Palace. And so he’d behaved like a man who’d known nothing but slavery and near starvation, no better than an animal created solely to be used or whipped.

Pride made him want to refuse the jar and turn his back to her. She’d never known a day of hunger. She’d never faced the prospect of someone deciding whether she would live another day or die.

“Go on,” she coaxed more softly than before.

Lukan took the food and backed away quickly, keeping himself from thanking her, refusing to show any weakness or trust. He shouldn’t even be eating. What was wrong with him? How could he feel hunger with Arez in such peril? How could he be so selfish?

Interview/Giveaway: Last Vamp Standing by Kristin Miller

Last Vamp Standing
Kristin Miller

No choice but to kill…

Tortured by demonic voices, Dante’s soul is as black as they come. But when he meets Ariana—an innocent seductress who’s fighting demons of her own—Dante second guesses everything he’s ever known about sacrifice, passion and soul-scorching love.

He can’t love her and protect her…

Before Dante wages war against Crimson Bay’s greatest threat, he must make a choice: love Ariana the way she deserves, risking her life in the process—or fight to protect her, unleashing the monster he’s determined to bury.

Hello Kristin!  It is so nice to meet you.  Thank you for being here with me today!
Hi! Thanks so much for having me!

First, for readers new to your series, Vampires of Crimson Bay, can you give a quick rundown and the role of Last Vamp Standing in the series?
The series started with InterVamption and a blood war between vampires and shape-shifters (therians) in Crimson Bay. But as villains rose up, hell bent on exterminating vamps in the area, the vampires who remained were forced to stand together to fight back. Vamped Up (the second book in the series) details the journey of two ill-fated lovers to finding love while an evil hybrid mastermind tries to kill them to gain supernatural powers. In Last Vamp Standing, the conflict comes to a head as the vampires make their final stand.

Are there any hints you can give us about what might be coming up in the series?
As of right now, there are no books scheduled in the Vampires of Crimson Bay series after Last Vamp Standing. I’ve tossed around ideas that could spin-off of other characters, but as of this moment, nothing is set in stone.

You write in several different genres including Paranormal Romance, Romantic Suspense and Erotic Paranormal Romance.  Do you have a favorite?
I think paranormal romance (whether erotic or straight) is my favorite. I love paranormal for the freedom in the world building. I love taking something mundane and making it extraordinary. I love looking at things in new ways, with new twists. I love erotic paranormal romance because I get to focus more heavily on the characters than in the plot-heavy paranormals I usually write.

Kristin, What about reading?  What is your favorite genre to read?
Paranormal—darker the better. Over the last year I’ve also taken a liking to Urban Fantasy.

If you could pick one cast of characters from one series or book to come to life, who would it be and why?
Dante. Hands down. He captured me the instant he arrived on the page. He’s a wounded hero, but strong enough to take care of the heroine. He’s witty and snarky, but not to the point of being an ass. He’s smoking hot, but doesn’t notice that he is. Does it get any better than that?

If you were not an author, is there another dream job you would like to have?
I was an English teacher before I tried my hand at writing and publishing. I’d go back to that. There are days I miss the classroom, students, lesson planning, and structuring essays. (Yeah, crazy, I know.) If I wasn’t a writer, there’s nowhere I’d rather be than the classroom.

Do you have any new projects coming up that you can share with us?
I’m currently writing two erotic paranormal romance novellas to continue my Isle of Feralon series with Harlequin Cravings. The novellas take place on an enchanted isle where dragons rule the skies, werewolves rule the land, and merfolk rule the sea. They’ll release sometime next year. I’m also working on a three book paranormal romance/urban fantasy series.

Social media is everywhere nowadays.  Do you have a favorite social media outlet?

One of my favorite questions – who would you cast if Last Vamp Standing were made into a movie?
Ariana—She’s sweet and demure, yet has an undeniable sense of strength about her. When it’s time to kick ass, she steps up alongside her vampire elder brothers and sisters. I’m thinking Scarlett Johansson or Kate Beckinsale.
Dante—He’s tortured hero to the max, dark hair and smoldering eyes. I’m thinking Hayden Christensen.

I think that’s about it for today!  Thank you again for coming by!
Thanks! Until next time. J
