Four years after escaping her abusive ex-husband, Kim finally believes she’s in control of her life and her emotions and she's determined to never risk either again with a man. She has a great home, a job as a security specialist which she loves, and Jake for a best friend. But things are a tad lonely in the sex department, so she decides to embark on a no-strings-affair with one of her hot co-workers. And who better to help her remember how to lure a man than her best friend?
Jake has wanted Kim from the moment he first saw her, but four years ago, she was too young and too damaged. So he kept her close and he kept her safe, offering her a job in his security company and the training to feel safe again, and he bided his time. But now, after the long wait, if she imagines he’s going to stand by while she seduces some other guy...
Never going to happen.
If you decide to read Losing Control by Nina Croft, you are really in for a treat. I found this book to be teasing and fun. It’s my first from Nina, and I found her writing to be engaging with a smooth flow.
Kim is a security agent, and she’s become best friends with her boss, Jake, who is also the owner. They do things like go skiing, have movie night, and generally buddy buddy stuff. Jake was really there for her in the past when Kim really needed a friend. She had just got out of an abusive marriage, and needed to get back on her feet. Present day, Kim feels like she needs to get her groove on and she is looking to the men in her company. Jake gets wind of this and well, let’s just say he has other plans for Kim. He wants her for his own, and Jake always gets what he wants.
Ok, let’s start with Kim. I absolutely loved this girl. She was naïve to the point of hilarity. Blind to the fact that this beast of a man, Jake, was completely into her. And when she figures it out, she takes steps to make him less attracted to her. The silly girl actually manages to make herself even more sexy and is just clueless to it. But under that, there is a scared woman who has had a horrible past. She is trying to overcome that, but she just isn’t going about it the right way at all.
Jake is fantastic. The man is so clever, he is a damned genius, I tell you! His antics over Kim had me giggling, especially when some of his employees clued Kim in on the speech they were given upon her employment. When Jake gets the opportunity to get closer (and by closer, I mean wayyyy closer) to Kim, he jumps at the chance. And the man has some seriously sexy hotness going on. He is imaginative and he brings the heat in some major ways.
When it comes to sex in Losing Control, there are a lot of fun times. This author teases you sometimes, without letting you get to the um, final goal. It was great to feel the tension and frustration right along with the characters. Both Kim and Jake have control issues, meaning neither wants to lose it, and so seeing them come together is something that is terrific on so many levels!
He made a leisurely perusal of her face. "Am I what?" The words were softly spoken, but Kim's spine stiffened. There was a threat there somewhere, and she'd never been good at backing down.
She licked her lips slowly and then said quite precisely, "Are you well-endowed, Jake?"
Her question was worth the look of surprise that flickered across his face. But then the surprise was gone and a very unexpected satisfied smile settled in its place. He took her hand. For a moment, he stroked her fingers gently, and when she didn't pull away, he moved it toward him and held her palm flat against his groin. Kim gasped.
"What do you think?" he asked.
Whatever she expected, it hadn't been this. She tugged her hand, but he held it firm. Jake's face was devoid of expression, giving no clues to his thoughts. The air charged with a strange tension, and his flesh swelled and hardened beneath her fingers.
He was becoming aroused. Even with her meager experience, she could tell. She had to put a stop to this now.
She forced herself to relax, made the tension drain from her body. "Er, yes, " she muttered.
"Yes? Yes, what?"
"yes, you are definitely well-endowed, Jake. Congratulations."
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. The characters were fun, yet they had heart. They flirted and played with each other in a way that had me eager to see what each new day brought. The sexual heat was mind blowing. The drama was definitely present and accounted for. Jake is a man to love, and Kim is a fireball of fun. I definitely recommend!
