Title: Scent of a Mate
Series: Sassy Mates #1
Author: Milly Taiden
Published: September 20, 2013 Latin Goddess Press
Format: Ebook provided for review

GOODREADS

Mission: Scent a Mate

Jordan Alvarez knew that a promise to her best friend involved staking out the local wolf pack's scenting ceremony and recording the graphic details, but she was the writer and the only one with the balls to finish the task. No one would know that four human women had sneaked proof of their rituals, or at least, that was the plan until Aric Wolfe showed up.

Mission: Stake a Claim

Aric Wolfe knew his baby sister was up to something, and expected her best friend, Jordan, to be in on the chaos. He finally had an opportunity to lay claim to a mate that had been under his nose for years. Jordan's scent called to both the man and the animal, and he was done fighting the call of the beast. It was time to mark his mate.

Mission: Survive an Alpha

When a good intention creates a problem for the Wolfe family, Jordan finds herself being stalked by a woman intent on claiming Aric as her own. Battle lines will be drawn, love will be put to the test, and Aric will have to fight Jordan's strong personality to keep her alive. Two alpha hearts seeking control will either find the balance or risk losing their love forever.

I’d read Milly Taiden before as April Angel and I absolutely loved her books. So when the opportunity came along to read her as Milly, I was beyond ecstatic. And what I saw was that Milly is a terrific author, no matter what name she uses. Scent of a Mate was action packed with enough heat and drama to fuel any shifter lover’s dream.

This is the story of Jordan and Aric. Jordan is a human, and a curvy latina at that. I really enjoyed her character. She was energetic and intelligent. Not only that, but she was daring and not quite aware of how fantastic she really was. Poor girl took more than her fair share of beatings in this book, it was a rough time for her, no doubt. I’m hoping (and I’m sure!) her future will be much easier than her time in Scent of a Mate.

His nostrils flared. With deliberate care, he placed her on the ground, but he didn’t let go. Instead he cupped her face and kissed her. The combination of passion, fear, and adrenaline sent her arousal skyrocketing. She curled her hands around his neck, digging her nails into the back of his skull. Instant heat exploded in her core. Her pussy went slick with need.

He delved his tongue into her mouth. Hot damn the man was a fantastic kisser. He was agressiv3e. He took. He owned. He branded. And she loved it.

Meanwhile Aric is the oldest son in the Wolfe family, and his father is current Alpha. Yep, that means Aric is full of big bad himself. God, I love me some Alpha men. I can’t tell you how much it thrills me to read about these guys, and Aric definitely does not disappoint. He was beyond caring, a bit mischievous, incredibly sexy and well, he was just all man. Ok, well, he is all wolf. Man. Wolf man. You know what I mean! His possessiveness is what shifter fans like me lust for in a book. He’s all about “Mine” and every time he said the word I got chills all over my body. Aric is definitely one of my favorite Alpha men I’ve read. His devotion was really the highpoint for me. I’m thinking about wandering the woods in search of my own wolf. Like I said, Alpha all the way.

“You still don’t understand.” His gray eyes flared with wolf power. “You own my heart. You’re the most important person in my life.” Tenderness filled his gaze, followed by unquestionable determination. “And I won’t let anyone hurt you. That includes you. I will do anything to protect you. Even if means stopping you from putting yourself in harm’s way.”

Jordan has some great friends too. In fact, one of them is Aric’s sister, Ellie. She is the quintiscentual best friend. I want her to be my friend. She has so much love in her for her family and friends, yet she is this fierce wolf in her own right. And it would seem that mischieviousness runs in the Wolfe family (yep, right down from the matriarch down to the youngest wolf!) And if I am going to mention Jordan’s friends, I have to note Aric’s brothers. Talk about mischievious! These guys take the player mentality to a new level, but I think the times are changing for these fellows and I absolutely can’t wait to see their books.

Now the story! Whew! So much fun! It starts out with Ellie agreeing to let Jordan document a traditional mating/scenting ritual for the wolves. Jordan is to remain hidden…but as it turns out, that’s not as easy as it seems. From that point on it is action, friendship, sexy hot times, more action, a bit of mystery and intrigue, more sweating to the hotties, and more action. This book was nonstop and I was excited in one way or another through the whole story.

Milly’s writing carries a bit of a smart ass tone to it, which I absolutely love. Getting to know these characters felt like I was already talking to my friends. There was easy camaraderie and it just felt familiar and fun. The plot was exciting with multiple plot points happening – some of which aren’t completely resolved in this book. That means I am going to have to befriend Milly and beg her with puppy dog eyes to be on the list for the rest of this series, because I absolutely HAVE to know what happens next. Trust me, after you read this book, you will have to know too.

Review/Giveaway: A Tiger's Claim by Lia Davis

Title: A Tiger's Claim
Series: An Ashwood Falls Novel #1
Author: Lia Davis
Published: March 2013, Fated Desires Publishing
Format: Ebook provided for review
Tour: Yes, Sizzling PR

As the Alpha’s only daughter Shayna Andrews has always been treated like a rare gem, protected like royalty, and she’s suffocating. Her longing to be independent has driven her to sneak out one evening after dinner. After relishing in being able to run free without an escort, she finds herself face-to-face with the enemy, miles from home, and nearly loses her life until a lone wolf comes to her aid.

Travis Hunter’s main objective is to destroy the Onyx Pack—a group of drug using, murdering rogue shifters. His seek-and-destroy plans are put on hold when he rescues a female from a brutal attack. The beautifully exotic tiger shifter, Shayna, stirs a passion he thought died with his long-lost mate.

When Shay’s first heat cycle slams into her, Travis has no choice but to submit to her needs—and his own. But there is always a price to sleeping with the Pack princess. Not only will he have to face her Pack, Shay and Travis will now have to deal with that fact that their mating is beyond a simple night and could have consequences more than either of them had thought. And when Travis finds out Shay wears the enemy’s brand, things will go from bad to worse.

Warning: One alpha female who doesn't take no for an answer, a wolf with more on the line than just his heart, and a combustible attraction that's sure to cause more than one sweaty night.

This is an unusual read for me in the fact that there are some things that didn’t quite click with me as well as others in this story, but I really did enjoy it overall. Does that make sense? Let me see if I can explain…

This is the story of Shayna, and she is an adopted white tiger shifter. Cool, right? I thought so too. She’s been adopted by a leopard shifter family, and the patriarch happens to also be the pack Alpha. Even cooler. So in a way, Shayna is like a princess. That means lots of males in her life looking over her shoulder, and just being protective. That’s all well and good until you want some space, which Shayna does. So she takes off on a run. Heck, who can blame her? Well, that’s until she runs into trouble in the form of some rogue mutant shifters. The way these guys are explained depicts them as kind of gross, in my opinion. They are shifters, but they are stuck in midshift – permanently.

The thing that didn’t quite gel with me is that these guys are the big bad. They’ve got the whole area on alert. It’s a repetitive thing throughout the story. But for the most part, there isn’t really a lot to do with them. A couple fights, a battle… but nothing in any real detail. I really would have liked to see more, because they truly sound like the bad guys – and I just love that. I don’t want to always be able to sympathize and um, be turned on, by the bad guy.

Luckily someone comes to rescue Shayna, and that would be Travis. Well hello single daddy wolfen sexy man! I really liked Travis. Strong and sweet, and Alpha. I swear, you just say Alpha and I begin to drool. Shayna and Travis hit it off pretty well pretty early. I love the “Mine” shifter mentality, and Travis and Shayna don’t disappoint. I also thought it was wicked awesome that he is a wolf, she is a tiger, and her family is leopards. See, we all can get along!

Travis’ daughter, Josie, is a four year old ball of fun. The girl really stole the show at some points, and I found myself caring for this girl quickly and easily. She’s just one addition to this great cast of characters. I really liked Blaine, Shayna’s brother. But I can say that I wish some of these characters had more background. There were times when I felt like I was jumping in the middle of a series, rather than the first book.

Overall this was a light and fun read. There were many elements to this story that I thought were great additions – like magic and inherent powers. I can easily say I am looking forward to seeing more of this series in the future!

Review: Mated To The Devil by Eve Langlais

Title: Mated To The Devil
Series: No, not yet, but I have a feeling it could be
Author: Eve Langlais
Published: March 2013, Amira Press
Format: Ebook received for review

Not all pleasures are a sin...

Mina wants to put her seduction by a golden-eyed devil behind her, but the birth of her son, Jacques, renders that impossible. She tries to forget the only man who ever roused her passion, but when she notices her son exhibiting strange behavior—and less-than-human characteristics—she must face her past and learn to trust, and love, again.

Howling drunk, the one thing Remy clearly remembers is seducing Mina. A pity he didn’t think to get her address, especially since he marks her as his mate. When she disappears, he’s got plenty of time to regret, but he doesn’t get a chance to atone until she comes back into his life with an unexpected surprise.

Thrust into the role of father, Remy works to bond with his son while gaining forgiveness. But will he get the chance to truly make Mina his mate before danger threatens their fragile happiness?

I’m a huge fan of Eve Langlais, and I really loved this story. I felt it was a bit different than the other books I’ve read from her. There was a little less snark and humor, and a little more worry and self-deprecation on the character’s part. But on a few levels I really felt like I connected with this book more than others.

Why? Well, because of Mina. Mina is a single mom, which is something I always love to see in stories because I am one, myself. It instantly creates a connection to the character for me. I mean, sure, I don’t have a shifter baby, but maybe someday with a little luck, I could!

But aside from that, Mina is a warm and caring person. I love how that in the face of what could surely be the end of her, she stands up tall and gets everything done. I.Love.That. She is an untapped source of strength, and it just drew me to her over and over.

Remy is a great guy, err, wolf. He isn’t in the story quite as much as Mina, but when he is, he shines like a beacon. Sure, he’s made some mistakes. But he feels the err of them right to his core, and I think it really goes to show what kind of a man he is. And that’s how an Alpha should be. Yes, everyone makes mistakes. But the truly smart people learn from them.

I think the whole of this story was exciting and fast paced. The romance was sexy, the sweet parts were tender, and the danger was tangible. The story also switched through several points of view, which happened so seamlessly I didn’t feel like I was jarred or anything of a sort. And I really enjoyed the different perspectives, it helped complete the whole world for me. For fans of Eve Langlais, I think this is one not to be missed, and for those who may not have read her yet, this would be a good place to start.

Review: Pride's Pursuit by Cat Kalen

Title: Pride's Pursuit
Series: A Wolf's Pride, #3
Author: Cat Kalen
Published: August 2012
Format: Ebook provided for review
Tour: No

After defeating her master and releasing the enslaved wolves, Pride, Logan, Stone and the rest of the pack return to the Canadian mountains only to discover a village in chaos. Feeling responsible for the carnage, Pride is determined to show the world exactly who the monsters really are.

When her pack refuses to let her fight alone, Pride and her team set out to change mankind. But when her leadership is tested and a traitor emerges, not only must Pride pick between the two boys who love her most, her choice could either help put an end to war on the wolves or it could endanger the very existence of her kind.

Well it certainly has been something special to take this journey with Pride from book one to book three. Pride has been one of those characters I just loved everything about. She’s a wolf shifter, but like I’ve mentioned in previous reviews for Pride, she is more wolf than human. That’s just how Cat Kalen rolls, and I love it.

In Pride’s Pursuit we catch up with her after escaping the compound with Logan and a few others. They make their way to Canada, only to find Logan’s town is on fire. Pride feels this is her fault, and has heaped the burden of “making it right” on herself. And what comes next is an action and drama packed story.

In this book I’ve decided, finally, what love interest team I am on. Team Stone. I honestly thought I would go Team Logan, he and Pride seemed to have it all. But there is just something about that true mate link that just gets me. I love Stone. He is my favorite type of alpha male, stubborn, hot, and madly in love. So there it is, Team Stone. Over and over, things happen hat enforce my hope that Pride and Stone will be together.

But Logan isn’t bad. He’s actually very good for Pride. He’s calm and strong. He is able to help her keep her wits about her, to think before she acts. He obviously loves her. He’s young and sexy, and completely alpha. So why can’t I just jump on board? I don’t know!!! Maybe he is just too good, ya know? He’s saved Pride when she couldn’t save herself. He’s the “good guy” and there it is. He’s completely wonderful, just not bad enough for me.

Ok, I digress. Back to the book. There is a lot that happens in this book. There’s a traitor, and that is a very scary concept. And then Pride gets to know her father a bit more. That was really awesome and wonderful in so many ways. And then a PTF agent makes a difference in Pride’s life.

Between forests, caves, and compounds this story’s backdrop is beautiful. Pride has to worry about the cat shifters out there, and the PTF. And the climactic battle is really something terrific. The relationship with the other characters is what makes this special. Pride is such a strong woman, it’s almost like she is the Alpha, while Stone and Logan allow her to make decisions that will affect the whole group. The whole series is just wonderful, and I really recommend you give it a shot! Cat Kalen’s writing is fantastic; you really get to feel like you are right there. Or have you already read this series? I’d love to hear what you think!

Review: Mates Since Birth by Miranda Stowe

Title: Mates Since Birth
Series: Half-breed Shifter Series Book 3
Author: Miranda Stowe
Published: 2013 Whispers Publishing
Format: Ebook provided for review
Tour: Yes, Sizzling PR

Who knew one little mark could bond them together for eternity?

When a stranger shows up in her front yard claiming he’s her mate, Ari Fallow wants to laugh in Dane Griffin’s face. But the sleek, sophisticated jaguar makes her hormones hum with a desire she can’t deny. She almost wants to believe his claim that she’s been his since birth.

Her father, however, is still sore over the fact Dane marked her when she was only minutes old. After summoning a pack of wolves to their quiet community for Ari to make her own decision about which male she wants, Dane's original plan to sever his ties to Ari fly out the window. He can’t lose her again. This time, he's playing for keeps.

Mine.  Every PNR fan I know gets giddy goosebumps when they see those four letters italicized on their page, and I'm no exception.  I read this book in one day and I loved it.  I have to catch up books one and two and see if book four is out.  This one book made this series an instant hit with me. I absolutely love stories about mated shifters.  This one is terrific with lots of action, heat, and a few tender moments sprinkled in.

Right away you get to meet Ari, who is a wolf and deer shifter.  How cool is that?  But her wolf is predominant.  And when we first meet her she is trying to get her cat out of a tree.  She loves cats, but for the life of her, she can't keep one as a pet.  This whole scene made me giggle.  Then Dane comes along, and it is a good thing that Ari lives in a half-breed shifter community, Dane makes sure of that. My giggles stopped and the swoon started!  Wooooo, talk about hot!

Dane right off the bat had that smart ass edge to him, which I loved.  He helps Ari, and informs her that she is his mate and they actually already know eachother.  The care in his eyes really endears him to me.  You can tell he loves her, and has always loved her.  That jaguar has a whole lot of swagger, and I couldn't get enough of him from the first page to the last.

Then, as the story goes on and things come to light, other things are set metaphorically on fire between the two of them.  This book was awesome in all aspects.  I think the idea of hybrid shifters is great, and to pair a wolf with a deer in a woman?  Awesome!! And when stuff goes down, and everyone's back is against the wall, the action and drama were exciting.  So yep, I'm a fan for sure now.  Like I said, I have to catch up on the rest of this series - but I definitely will. I think if you are looking for something hot and exciting, with some great comebacks and strong characters, this is definitely a series to check out.
