This was quite an interesting books, and I was very excited to read it. It seems like lately I am very interested in books with alternate societies, so The Society sounded like it would fit right in. Kenzie Brooks seemed like she would be an interesting character to follow along.
And for the most part, I was not disappointed. Dissipate proved to have a really interesting plot. Kenzie in a place called The Society. The Society, I thought initially, would be like some sort of secret group, like the CIA (yes, I know they are not secret). As it turns out, The Society is more of a religious cult, except most of the people who are in it don't realize it. I don't know much about cults, so maybe that's how they all are. The man who is in charge of the cult is called The Keeper, and he instructs the people on what to do based on what the Light says (kind of like God would be). The police force in The Society are the Watchers, and they see everything. Now what's different about The Society is there is no technology whatsoever. They are kind of Amish in that sense. But most of the people there have never even heard of modern technology. So when Kenzie does get free and sees things like a cell phone, computer, and television, it is very exciting to see the world through her eyes. I found it a bit difficult to try to ignore the fact that I knew what all of these things were. It's a bit harder than I thought!
Kenzie seems to have luck on her side. She gets away, for one thing. But then a lot of other things that her mother wanted for her just seem to fall into place. To me, this seemed a bit convenient. Friends, school, etc... everything happens very quickly and with almost no effort at all. For my own tastes I would have preferred to see her struggle a bit more.
All in all I really enjoyed this book. It was exciting when she was on the run, and interesting when she was learning this new-to-her world. It has its fair share of sweet and funny moments (hello, slang words are awesome!) As for the writing...it was good, but it didn't quite grab me in the way that I'd hoped it would. I would say it wasn't very descriptive; a lot was very straight forward. But if you are looking for a quick and easy read, I'd definitely recommend Dissipate.
Kristin Mayer is a wife, a proud mother, and a full-time Analyst and Import Manager. Since an early age, she has always enjoyed reading and writing. While visiting her father one weekend, he suggested that she should take up writing again. With family and a career, she didn’t give it a lot of thought, until a story entered her mind and wouldn’t leave. It just kept forming and developing over a couple of months.
At the beginning of 2013, she decided to sit down and write it all down, but she kept it to herself. One sentence developed into two, and before she knew it, she had the makings of a novel.
Kristin tries to live life to the fullest during every moment. She loves to travel and meet new people. She holds a degree in International Business and uses it daily in her job. Kristin now adds “author” on her list of jobs, and feels very blessed and thankful.
