Silver Bastard by Joanna Wylde (Review)

Title: Silver Bastard
Series: Silver Valley #1
Author: Joanna Wylde
Published: April 7, 2015 - Berkley
Format: Galley & ARC
Pages: 448 Pages/Goodreads

Fourteen months. For fourteen months, Puck Redhouse sat in a cell and kept his mouth shut, protecting the Silver Bastards MC from their enemies. Then he was free and it was time for his reward—full membership in the club, along with a party to celebrate. That’s when he saw Becca Jones for the first time and set everything in motion. Before the night ended he’d violated his parole and stolen her away from everything she knew.

Five years. It was five years ago that Puck destroyed Becca and saved her all in one night. She’s been terrified of him ever since, but she’s even more terrified of the monsters he still protects her from... But Becca refuses to let fear control her. She’s living her life and moving forward, until she gets a phone call from the past she can't ignore. She has to go back, and there’s only one man she can trust to go with her—the ex-con biker who rescued her once before.

Puck will help her again, but this time it’ll be on his terms. No more lies, no more tears, and no more holding back what he really wants...

Ahhhhh.... PUCK!!!!  If you are a fan of the Reapers MC books like I am, you know who Puck is, and you've been anxiously awaiting his arrival in Silver Bastard.  Joanna Wylde, I love you.  I love this world you've brought to us, and I love how you can make a book that is relatively long fly by in the span of a moment.  Puck and Becca were beautiful to watch, and I can't recommend this book enough.

So Puck isn't a Reaper.  He's a Silver Bastard, which is an ally group to the Reapers.  Good news for us, that means the Reapers make a few appearances throughout the story.  But honestly, I didn't even care for the most part.  Puck was so enigmatic that he filled up the pages all on his own.  Dark and
troubled, he isn't a man to mess with.  Danger radiates off him.  And when he is around Becca, lust flows from him.  But not even just that, you can tell he well and truly cares about Becca and that is something beautiful.

Becca... whew.  This poor girl.  We meet her at a welcome home party after Puck and Painter (of the Reapers!!!) get out of prison, and she seems just like any other girl hanging around the club.  Her and Puck find themselves together, and then they find themselves together naked.  It's rough and sexy, full of need and a bit of danger.  Puck shows that he's just not another monster behind a cut, and Becca... well, we learn a lot about Becca in the day after.  There's a rescue, and none of their lives will ever be the same.

Silver Bastard was exciting.  It drew me in instantly, which is something I've come to love about Joanna Wylde's books.  She can really bring the reader in within just a few words.  Wylde's writing flows so fluidly, I had no problem feeling like I was right there living in a small mining town with the motorcycle club always within range.

This book covers quite a bit. Becca has quite a few inner demons to fight.  Hell, she has some outer demons, too.  She didn't come from good people, and they show themselves as pure evil time and again.  But she is fighting to become the woman she wants to be.  Well, save for one spectacular show of crazy and a great big middle finger to order, calm, and civility.  Fuck you world, I'm going down in flames and you're going with me.  Letting go and losing your mind can absolutely be a thing of beauty.

As for Puck, he wrestles with his feelings for Becca.  Things were so far from ideal when they met, but five years later she is still at the forefront of his mind.  I love that he didn't forget about her.  True love lasts.
