Primal Hunger by Sydney Somers (Review)

Title: Primal Hunger
Series: Pendragon Gargoyles #1
Author: Sydney Somers
Published: 2009, Samhain Publishing
Format: ebook received for review

When the sun goes down, passion is unleashed.

Kennedy Beaumont loves her bartending job, even if her spirited nature sometimes gets her in trouble. Like threatening to hose down one of Pendragon’s co-owners. When it comes to Tristan, she could use a good hosing down herself—maybe it’ll help her stop casting him as the star of her wickedest dreams. Since he goes out of his way to avoid her, it ought to be easy to put him out of her head—until he reluctantly offers her a ride home.

Gargoyle shape-shifter Tristan Callaghan hasn’t had time for anything other than recovering the mystical dagger that was used to permanently lock his brother in a prison of stone. The cat inside him should have stopped craving Kennedy’s touch long ago, but now that she’s sitting next to him in his car, his very human need for her is sharper than ever.

The distraction is costly. In a split second, Kennedy finds herself thrust into a dangerous, millennia-old hunt for Excalibur. A hunt that marks her for death—and leaves Tristan with a painful choice—sacrifice his family, his quest…or the one woman meant to be his.

Warning: There’s nothing tame about this alpha male hell-bent on claiming his mate. Featuring bone-melting explicit sex, graphic language, violence and a little harmless bite…or two.

Not too long ago I read the beginning novella for the Pendragon Gargoyles, and I loved it.  Recently I finished book one, Primal Hunger.  Sydney Somers writes a fast moving and exciting story - and hey, gargoyles!!

Kennedy and Tristan.... whew, they definitely light it up!! They "can't stand" each other, all while secretly wanting the other so bad it hurts.  Love that!!!  A stalled car on a dark road throws them together one night, and it is perfect.  The whole enemies to lovers theme works so well for them, and adds that extra tension.

Kennedy is the tough ass bartender at Pendragons.  She's human, and a bit oblivious to the whole gargoyle thing Tristan has going on.  She isn't aware of cat shifters, dragons, fae, or anything else supernatural.  So let's just say she has a couple surprises in front of her.  As a person, I really liked her.  She's kind of like chocolate candy.  She's hard on the outside, but inside she's all melty. She has a thing for Tristan, and she kind of waivers between she can't stand him, and she can't stop thinking about him.

As for Tristan, he's got the playboy thing down pat.  The thing is, it's all to take his mind off of Kennedy, who has plagued his thoughts like a naughty siren since he met her.  I absolutely love when a shifter is consumed by their attraction.  Everything is amped up, and you know when the climax comes it is going to be explosive.  No pun intended (wink wink)  I found Tristan to be really personable and easy to adore.  He's a good guy through and through.  He also has that whole Alpha instinct to him that I really can't get enough of.

She threaded her fingers through the ends of his hair, afraid to ask what he was doing.

Whatever it was, she wanted more.  She'd been wanting more months and the short distraction in the car had only flamed her hunger for him.

Slowly, he pushed her shirt up and pressed his lips to her sensitized flesh.  Kennedy shuddered, her breath catching in her throat as he trailed lower.  The hot sweep of his tongue circled her navel and he murmured something she didn't understand.  Then his fingers tugged at the snap on her shorts.

There's something supernatural out there that is after Kennedy, and once Tristan realizes this, he signs up to save her.  And then the sledgehammer falls, and he realizes exactly how important she is to him.  I love fated mates!!!  I love when love slams them upside their ever-loving heads and knocks them off their feet.  Tristan is a big sexy black cat, and Kennedy is the prey.  Their steamy scenes are incredible and passionate, and definitely made me wish that I was Kennedy!!

"What are you?"

"Yours."  He gripped her waist, his hands sliding higher to splay across her bare back.  "Just yours."

The story moved fast and Sydney Somers writes such an enigmatic story, I had no problem jumping right in headfirst and feeling their world out.  The supporting characters are all very interesting, and I can't wait to see love slap the rest of the Pendragon Gargoyles silly.  Seriously, you can just tell that passion is in store for these siblings.  If you are looking for a shifter/paranormal/supernatural romance with some interesting twists, then you should read this series.  I definitely recommend!

A born and raised Maritimer, Sydney Somers fell in love with writing when she finished her first story, Jenny and the Glowing Green Mittens. After attempting her first book in high school, she set writing aside to focus on school. While getting her degrees in psychology and education, Sydney tried her hand at journalism between part time jobs before finally returning to her love of writing.

Twenty-five novels and novellas later, Sydney is thrilled to spend her days slaying demons, running with shape-shifter packs and making the people in her head fall wildly in love. When she’s not writing or curled up with a good book, Sydney can be found chasing after her herd of kids, talking her way into a gourmet meal, exterminating rogue dust bunnies or joking about the pending zombie apocalypse. She loves hearing from readers and invites them to contact her anytime.
