How does a witch stay safe if a killer can get through her protection spells?
Witches like Ruby and Courtney can take care of themselves. So when Courtney is murdered, Ruby’s world crashes to a halt. The only thing keeping her grounded is the return of Courtney’s brother, Cooper. He seeks revenge, but Ruby wants to help other witches stay alive. To do that, she’ll have to reunite with her old coven’s High Priest, who also happens to be her cheating ex-boyfriend.
If that wasn’t awkward enough, when the killer gets too close, Cooper temporarily moves into Ruby’s place while a police officer tails her every move. Cooper’s presence distracts Ruby as they fight their desire against their need to stay safe. Then Courtney begins to haunt Ruby’s dreams and secrets are spilled, things from Cooper’s past that could get them both killed. The killer continues to stalk Ruby and the more she discovers, the more she fears she won’t be able to keep her heart in her chest.
I’m a little late for the spooky time of year, but let’s take a second to admire this cover. I swear on all that is scary, this is by far one of the best covers I’ve ever seen!! Just that image alone gives me chills!!
So on with the review! Witch Hearts by Liz Long – definitely a must read if you are into witches and suspense or mystery! She really did such a terrific job with this story; I was captivated the whole way through!
It starts off with a really spooky scene, a young woman out alone faced with a mysterious man. She knows there is something wrong, and oh-my-god, she is so right. This scene totally set the tone for the book, and there were plenty of “edge of your seat” situations through the rest of the story.
But that girl isn’t our heroine. That would be Ruby. I loved Ruby! She is this very powerful witch whose best girlfriend just got murdered – and she feels like she is next. Ruby is down to Earth and very sharp. I love that she didn’t go around flaunting her powers. I’m not so sure I would have the same self-restraint ha-ha. But it’s not long before she is on the case, she wants to know what happened to Courtney, and she wants to make sure no one else goes through what Courtney suffered.
And that brings us to Cooper, Courtney’s brother. Now he was a character I really enjoyed. He left the area due to being involved in black magic and some crime. Now he is back to mourn his sister. Cooper and Ruby have always had some sparks between them, but they never really acted on them. He’s a man to be reckoned with, protective over Ruby and out for blood where Courtney is concerned.
The slight cramp in her leg made her slow to a walk. Catching her breath, she tried to loosen her left calf muscle when she heard a scuffling noise behind her. She risked a glance back and a large shadow came over her as a hulk of a man stood several feet behind her. He didn’t move to greet her. She opened her mouth to speak, but her gut screamed at her. A boulder sat heavy in her stomach; she needed to get away from him.
So then you have the suspense and mystery of it all. Who killed Courtney and the other witches? Why did they kill these women? Who is next??? The killer begins leaving messages for Ruby, and I got goosebumps! Liz Long did a great job of misdirecting suspicion and making me wonder just who did actually do such heinous things.
The characters in this story were all fantastic and very vivid. I even loved the secondary characters like Ruby’s boss, Miranda and her cheating dirt bag exboyfriend, Michael. Ok, I didn’t love him, but you know what I mean! The whole flow of the story was very smooth and I found it to be a quick and enjoyable read for sure. If you are interested in a few scary moments and a great mystery, then I definitely suggest you give Witch Hearts a try!
