Guest Post/Giveaway: Realm of Secrets by MaryLynn Bast

Realm of Secrets
MaryLynn Bast

Schadoh Aphenithea has always looked up to her older sister and willingly follows in her footsteps, venturing out into the new realm where humans and other strange creatures exist.

Unexpectedly, Schadoh meets Dakota who turns out to be her best friend and protector. With the threat of vampires invading Loxy and Earth, she will need all the help she can get when the portal to her realm is closed. She is forced to remain in the earth realm and live as a human. Something she finds is not quite as easy as it looks from the wall of mists. Schadoh must learn to co-exist in the earth realm while keeping the secret that other realms exist.

Sibling Rivalry

In Realm of Secrets, Schadoh is a typical teenage girl who knows everything and comes across a little bratty. The younger sister, she feels she’s invisible and even though she won’t admit it, she’s jealous of Seriana’s abilities. My goal in this story is to show sibling rivalry, even though there really isn’t any and how Schadoh plays on her own imagination and negative thoughts.

Like most children, sibling rivalry raises its ugly head at one time or another, in some cases more often than not. I remember many days lying in bed after getting in trouble for fighting with my little sister, thinking I wish I was an only child. Mind you, I had two brothers too. There was my older brother, me, younger brother, and then younger sister. I have to sit back and laugh at the memories of my older brother and I griping about the younger ones always getting their way, while we had to be responsible. Later I found out they used to sit and connive of ways to get us in trouble, but also gripe about us being older and getting to go places and do things they were too young to do. We were all clueless.

In Realm of Secrets Seriana has no idea that Schadoh even feels envious or why she seems upset all the time and chalks it up to teenage hormones. Coming to the earth realm she tries to protect Schadoh, but the way she handles it is not ideal because she is wrapped up in her own problems trying to find Erick. Schadoh feels ignored and treated like a child when she just wants to grow up, sometimes too fast.

I hope everyone enjoys the tale I weaved and see that although Schadoh is bratty, she does grow and mature through the story. She learns from her mistakes and realizes there is more to life than just getting her way. Enjoy!

Review: The Lure of Shapinsay by Krista Holle

Title: The Lure of Shapinsay
Author: Krista Holle
Published: December 2011
Format: Ebook provided by author for review

Ever since Kait Swanney could remember, the old crones of the village have been warning her to stay away from the selkies. They claim that like sirens of old, the seal men creep from the inky waters, shed their skins, and entice women to their deaths beneath the North Sea. But avoiding an encounter becomes impossible when Kait is spotted at the water’s edge, moments after the murder of a half-selkie infant.

Unexpectedly, Kait is awoken by a beautiful, selkie man seeking revenge. After she declares her innocence, the intruder darts into the night, but not before inadvertently bewitching her with an overpowering lure.

Kait obsesses over a reunion deep beneath the bay and risks her own life to be reunited with her selkie. But when she lands the dangerous lover, the chaos that follows leaves Kait little time to wonder—is it love setting her on fire or has she simply been lured?

Before I started this book, I thought about it quite a bit.  Historical books can be quite a challenge for me, I struggle without the modern conveniences (although I have had a few fantastic experiences with historicals).  Also, this book was about Selkies – something else I’ve not had great experiences with.  Now, throw all of that out the door because this book was f-a-n-t-a-s-t-i-c!

In a time when legend rules, faeries are real, and people are superstitious we find Kait who is a bit outside of the norm, herself.  She lives on the island of Shapinsay.  We start this book when her best friend, Astrid, is giving birth.  Rumors fly instantly, people claim the baby is part animal.  Selkie to be exact.

Quick note, for those who are not yet familiar with Selkies… they aren’t shifters, exactly.  They are like beings who can shed their seal skin and look human, but their seal skin is a part of them.  It molds to their body, it recognizes them, and when they put it on they resume their true form of a seal.  Perhaps this definition will help:  Selkies on Wiki

Back to Kait.  A Selkie in the sea sees Kait looking in the water for the infant, and he thinks it is she who is at fault for what has happened.  (am I vague much?) And he decides he is going to get justice, vigilante style.  He begins to wreak havoc, as Selkies are rumored to do.  And then one night as he watches her as she sleeps, she wakes up to see him.  Legend has it that Selkies are magical, and even a look will drive a woman crazy with thoughts of love. But Kait is convinced it is real love, and not the after effects of magic.

It was so very gripping to watch Kait’s journey.  Personally I couldn’t tell whether she was going mad or was truly madly in love.  Maybe it was both.  But watching these together was certainly a treat indeed.  I do believe they both went a little mad together.   Eamon, the Selkie, is so gruff at time, I didn’t know if I felt bad for him or for Kait.

Ultimately, this story of love was a treat.  The characters were vivid.  The story was heartbreaking at times.  The emotions were beautifully conveyed.  I wish I had read this book sooner, it was so good and so unexpected.  There are so many twists and turns, questions and drama… everything played out perfectly and I felt like I was right there with everyone.  I definitely recommend this book!

Infected
A Click Your Poison Book
James Schannep

3 Unique Storylines. Over 50 Possible Endings. Just one question... Will YOU Survive the Zombie Apocalypse?

Here’s how it works: You, Dear Reader, are the main character of this story. Live, die, and rise again based solely on the merit of your own choices. Each link represents a choice, and there’s no going back, so choose wisely.

Everyone has their plan; what they’d do to survive if and when the zombie apocalypse happens. Now you can see how you’d hold up against the legions of undead—without needing to call the CDC because crazed bath salts users are trying to eat your face off.

"Infected. Is. So. Good." -- A girl just like you.

"Holy $#*% this is awesome!" -- A guy more or less like you.

Like the gamebooks popular in the 1980s-90s (Choose Your Own Adventure, Give Yourself Goosebumps, etc), this is a series where you choose how to progress through the book. Unlike any others, this is the first series designed specifically for adults. And as an ebook, you simply click your choice and the story flows forward for you. No flipping pages.

When Your Work Rises From the Dead

By James Schannep

Indie writers have a bad rap. There’s a stigma that these authors couldn’t cut it in the real world of publishing, and therefore used the resources of the internet to bypass the gatekeepers of talent. Some writers, admittedly, deserve this stereotype. For your first story, you probably shouldn’t publish it. You should email it to friends and family for their enjoyment, ask for feedback from strangers online, and grow before you try to stake a professional claim.

But what about projects rejected for reasons other than talent? Those rejected because they are considered “not marketable”? Marketability is actually more important than talent to the business side of publishing. Don’t believe me? How else can you explain this? Sure, at some point, talent is marketability, but not always. You could’ve penned the best vampire novel ever written, but the odds of getting accepted by a publishing house are extremely low—the market is flooded with vampires and therefore it might be rejected based on marketability.

So they will kill your work before it’s even born, and it’s up to you to resurrect it. You have the power. It’s no longer “Can I?” but “Should I?” Short stories are a perfect example. Youcan’t market a single short story as a publishing house, but you sure as hell can self-publish it online as an indie author. And if it’s good enough, you should.

Which brings me to INFECTED and “Click Your Poison” books. No, it wasn’t rejected by a publishing house—it wasn’t even submitted to a publishing house—it was rejected by Hollywood. Back in 2008, INFECTED was a screenplay. It made some ripples in the pond, did well in contests, and even won me a little money. What it didn’t do was attract studio attention. Why not? It was good, I was told, but it needed to either be based on existing intellectual property or be a zombie musical rom-com. Read: Marketability. Not wanting to compromise my story, I shelved the project.
Cut to four years later and an idea to make a “Choose Your Own Adventure” series for grown-ups.* I knew right away that INFECTED needed to rise from the dead. A book where the reader can finally find out for themselves if they would survive the zombie apocalypse? Marketable! I believed this so much so, in fact, I decided not to even attempt the traditional publishing route. It’s the new Wild West in publishing, and that makes indie authors the new outlaws. But soon, very soon, “self-published” will no longer be a dirty word.

Excerpt/Giveaway: Affinity by Mary Merrell

Affinity
Bird In A Guilded Cage
Mary E Merrell

The crows followed Talon around everywhere. When he graduated from high school, Talon moved to Sacramento to work with his uncle, and the birds followed. He recognized the same straggly-tailed old crow that had followed him around since junior high. Iris Yorita lived in his old neighborhood in Modesto. Snakes were drawn to her as the big, black birds were drawn to him. She called their ability an AFFINITY. Claimed it was a gift from God, and they should use it to help people. Talon thought she was out of her mind. How could a bunch of mangy crows or slimy snakes help anyone?

When a thief targeted the people in his uncle's neighborhood, all fingers pointed at the new kid, Talon. He decided it was time to put this strange ability to the test. Find out who was robbing their neighbors and clear his name. As Talon learned to communicate with his crows, the thievery heated up. Something more sinister than mere robbery was going on, and it would take Talon, Iris, and their new found friends, to discover what really was going on in this up-scale neighborhood

 Excerpt

Talon took his usual seat on the couch. The television was on but the sound muted. When his uncle returned, he held an old, jacked-up photo album, the cover propped open by yellowed papers. He stopped in front of Talon.
“Uncle Nate. Listen.” Talon stood up and met his uncle’s blue gaze and braced himself to be made fun of, for his uncle to laugh his ass off. “I can communicate with crows.” Okay. There. He had said it. First time ever.
“I know.”
“What?” Talon dropped back onto the couch, sinking into the cushion as he cradled Scraggy close to his chest.
“Well, I didn’t exactly know you’ve been talking with them, but I’ve known you’ve got some kind of weird relationship with them. I’ve been waiting for you to spill it, kid. I’ve seen those black buzzards following you around like they was waiting for you to croak or something.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?” Talon felt...disappointed. As if everyone knew except him. Like he was a big joke or something.
“Don’t get all butt-hurt. I figured you’d tell me when you were ready.”
Uncle Nate plopped down next to Talon like nothing bizarre was happening. “Look at this.” He put the photo album on Talon’s knees, opened the worn cover and carefully placed the papers and news clippings on the end table. Sticky paper held old black and white photographs in place as Uncle Nate flipped the pages.
“Do you know what our last name means?” he asked.
When Talon didn’t answer, Uncle Nate pointed to an old picture He tapped his finger on the man standing there. Behind the man was a big, black bird perched on a fence.
“Our last name means crow or raven.”
Talon swallowed and took back all the crappy things he had just thought about his uncle.
“Your great-grandfather claimed he could talk to these birds. Everyone thought he was nuts. Our grandmother, your great-grandmother told us the family secret when we were in grade school. Your father and I. Of course, we were warned if we ever said anything the crows would come and peck our eyeballs right out of our heads.” He widened his eyes at Talon, took on a spooky voice and waggled both his hands next to his head. “Or you’d be driven crazy by the birds, oouuuuweee aaahhh.”
Scraggy cawed and struggled a little.
When Talon didn’t laugh or smile at his joke, he continued, “Your father and I used to imagine what it was like if we could control the birds,” he said in a soft voice.
“You don’t really control them.” Talon ran his finger across the picture of his great-grandfather. “It’s more like a connection with them.” He let his mind touch briefly with Scraggy, sending comforting thoughts. The bird quieted down.
“Right on. When did it start?”
“In middle-school.” Talon turned the page, looking for more pictures with a strange black bird.
“You won’t find anymore pictures of the bird. Believe me. We searched through this many-a-time. But you might be interested in this.” He handed Talon a small black leather-bound book. “Your great-grandfather’s journal. It sounded like a lot of rambling to me, but maybe you’d understand. With your ability and all.”
