A Reaper Made by Liz Long (Review)

Title: A Reaper Made
Series: Standalone
Author: Liz Long
Published: Oct 30, 2014
Format: Ebook received for review
Pages: 197

Grace had finally gotten used to her new afterlife as a “Made” – a Reaper who used to be human. When Made Reapers and souls begin disappearing, however, Grace and her mentor Tully suspect demons. Grace’s worst fears are confirmed when her living family is threatened.

She’ll have to break every rule in the Reaper book to save them, including using a little magic to become temporarily human. With the help of Tully and her witchy friend Tessa, Grace goes undercover to save the fates of kidnapped souls – only to discover that demons aren’t working alone. Betrayal and distrust runs deep and Grace discovers that sometimes even Reapers are prone to humanity.

This is the third book I've read from Liz Long.  If you are looking for a terrific Urban Fantasy story, then you should check her out.  I've read about a supernatural circus, a serial killer after witches, and now with A Reaper Made, I meet her reapers.  I don't know about you, but I love a good reaper story, and A Reaper Made certainly delivers.

Grace is our reaper heroine.  She died at a young age, and was offered a chance to continue helping others as she did in life.  She proves herself to be a thoughtful young lady, with an awesome sense of humor and a great big dose of smart ass comebacks - which I completely loved.  She has no problem facing down authority when she knows they are wrong.  She's a really terrific character.

In the book, reapers are in danger.  Not only reapers, but also humans.  And it's up to Grace, her mentor, Tully, and her best (witch) friend, Tessa, to find out what the heck is going on.  Liz Long created a wonderful supernatural mystery here, let me tell you.  When the bad guy was revealed, I was a bit surprised - and I love that!! But there are multiple bad guys here, and multiple good guys.  It's a pretty awesome fight.

Witches, shifters, angels, demons, reapers, and humans... the battlefield is life, and everyone is playing a part.  Tully is definitely a father type figure in the story, trying to keep Grace in line and sticking to the rules that reapers have to follow, something that is definitely not always an easy task.  Tessa is this awesome and very old witch, the woman has some definite power.  But she is also loving and just plain old fun.  There are other very important characters, but I'll keep quiet about those so I don't spoile anything.  Let's just say that not everyone is as they seem, and there are definitely surprises in store.

This story has a lot of great elements.  Of course you get the supernatural, but there are also brief touches on romance.  The mystery of it all really plays out well, and kept me thinking and engaged the entire way through.  Like I said, if you are into Urban Fantasy and you love a good reaper book, definitely check out A Reaper Made.
