Hey everyone! So today I have the conclusion to the WitchBlood series, which I loved. I haven't gotten to this book, but I'm sure it's a great ending! I've also got an interview for you today. Have you always been a writer or
wanted to be a writer?
Well, originally and throughout my teens I
wanted to be a dancer. I was pretty good and dancing was my life. When I wasn’t
dancing I was reading or drawing. Unfortunately when I was 17 I tore the
muscles along my lower spine and my dancing days were over! I fell back on my
next love which was reading and went to study English Literature and Language
at University. From then on I harboured a secret dream to write, but I never
got past the first chapter and I never had the confidence.
So if WitchWar is the last book,
what do you have planned next?
I have a new YA series which is not at all supernatural,
which I started writing last year, before I got the idea for WitchWar; so I may
continue with that. It is slightly apocalyptic in style… or I may try something
new. I’m not sure yet! I love the freedom of writing fantasy, it is the
ultimate distraction for your imagination! It will also be hard to let go of
all my WitchBlood characters; in fact I got quite emotional writing the final
chapters of WitchWar… for various reasons!
How do you write? Where and what
time of day? What works best for you as a writer?
One of the things I love about being an
indie writer is that I set my own schedules. For example I was quite tired and
emotionally drained after publishing WitchHunt (book 4) as I had just moved
250miles to the south of England with my husband and children. We didn’t know anyone here so I wanted to
take some time out of writing and settle in. Even though I wrote WitchFire last
year it wasn’t really until this summer that I suddenly really started wanting
to write again. Once I get the idea for a book I write quite intensively. For
example with WitchWar I began when the kids went back to school in the first
week of September and I wrote Monday to Friday from 09:30 till approximately
2pm. If the words are flowing I might finish sooner, but I would aim for 2000
words a day / 10,000 words a week. In the final weeks I also did some intense
night-time sessions!
So do you plan your novels?
No! I am dreadful at planning! I get the
idea for the novel and write that down and as long as I have a couple of tense
‘dramatic moments’ then I just get writing. I am definitely a ‘go with the
flow’ type writer! I find that as I’m writing scenes I suddenly get whooshes of
inspiration, so I may jot those down, but that’s as far as it goes.
Emma Mills is a stay-at-home mum. She shares her home with her husband, two children, a dog, 3 cats, a house rabbit and a tankful of fish. Once her youngest child started school she began to write.
WitchBlood was published in January 2012, swiftly followed by WitchCraft and WitchLove. Emma published what she had intended to be the finale of the series, WitchHunt, a week after moving her family south to Somerset, in November 2013. A prequel to the series, WitchFire, followed in 2014.
However, after fans began asking for more, a plan began to develop. The Witchblood Series didn’t feel finished, so WitchWar was born. Emma says now that she has written WitchWar, she feels that the series is complete. WitchWar is set ten years after WitchHunt. It has everything you want from a supernatural final book: fear, heartbreak and resolution.
