Better When It Hurts.... holy shit. So I read Love The Way You Lie, the first book in the Stripped series, but Better When It Hurts blew it out of the water. I hate to get all fan-girl all over Skye Warren, but seriously - the woman has such a way with words, I don't even think I could write a review to do it justice.
Blue and Lola (Hanna) both work at the Grand strip club. She dances and he's the head bouncer. Then we find out they have shared history, and he's actually working there because of her. Because he wants to keep an eye on her, and he has a "revenge" plot ready. You know what, if multiple orgasms is revenge, I'll take it. In the first book I liked Blue, but I didn't love him. Of course not, I didn't really get to know him. But now... oh my god. This man who is so brutal and strong and a force in and of himself, on the inside he is all heart. So while he has this hate-on for Lola, that's not all there is to it.
Some part of me is made of steel - a small, dark part. I'm a metal pipe covered in blood at my core.
And Lola... well, Hannah, she's not all you think either. Yes, she is a stripper. Yes, she has done very bad things for money. Yes, she's been bounced around and abused her entire life. But somehow that hasn't broken her. She has an overwhelming fountain of emotion there for Blue, he's just got to look beneath the cement. And the woman she lives with, Mrs. Owens, is further proof that Hannah is not the girl you think she is.
"Like I said, we have unfinished business. You owe me something."
No, I'd been right all along. He wants to hurt me. He wants to fuck me. I'm sure he'll end up doing both. My throat is dry, "Your pound of flesh?"
He curves his hand around my jaw, cradling me. Threatening me. Promising. "I've earned that much, don't you think?"
A tear snaked down my cheek. "Yes," I whisper.
"I'm the only one who gets to fuck you." He leans close, his breath warm against my neck. "I wasn't going to let him slap you around, Lola. The only person who's going to mark this pretty skin is me."
When I think of Hannah and Blue, it's like a tornado that spins into a fire. Have you ever seen a video of that, a fire tornado? You should look it up, because it's perfect for these two. They have so much heat and chemistry, yet together they are so beautiful it hurts to look at them. I don't know how Skye Warren manages to do it time and again, but she does. She takes what would normally be an ugly and sinister situation, and she makes it something heartfelt, beautiful, and emotional. That's not to say the couple is without flaws, but they love each other despite those flaws.
I read this book in one day - and that's with going to work, mowing the lawn, and taking care of my daughter. I couldn't put it down, and when I was forced to, I was continually thinking about it. I am totally enamored with this series, and if you like things a bit darker and on the edge, I can't recommend it enough.
