Guest Post & Giveaway: Checking It Twice by Jodi Redford

Checking It Twice
Jodi Redford

Tis the season for double seduction.

The only item on Jana Colton's Christmas list this year is Kevin Monahan. Preferably naked in her bed. The delicious, hunky chef has been resisting her forever, but she's pulling out all the sexy stops this holiday. Especially since his acceptance of an out-of-state job threatens to nix her quest to rock his boxers off.

Jana has always been Kevin's personal Kryptonite, but giving in to her isn't an option. Relationships are a four-letter word in his book. He cares far too much for Jana to let his emotional baggage ultimately break her heart.

With the arrival of his best friend, Nick Pappas, the balance of temptation shifts. From their past history of sharing women, Nick knows every dirty trick it takes to lead Kevin astray, and he's not afraid to use them. Particularly since Nick's convinced that Jana is exactly what Kevin needs to be happy and whole.

Their game of seduction quickly snowballs into something that feels an awful lot like love--in triplicate. But with Kevin dead set on leaving Michigan, there's a real possibility it could be a blue Christmas for them all.

**Guest Post**

First off, I’d like to thank Fictional Candy for letting me hang out with you all today.

So I thought I’d talk a bit about exposing ourselves. No, not that kind of exposing ourselves. There will be no gratuitous flashing in this post. You can all breathe a sigh of relief now. Nope, the type of exposure I’m referring to revolves around stripping down our barriers and letting people see who we really are behind these protective shields we oftentimes wear. Honestly, is there any scarier, nerve wracking prospect than baring ourselves to others? Whether it’s a figurative nakedness or the full monty, it can bring with it the same sense of vulnerability. To share our inner most thoughts and fears with someone is something that most of us don’t give up easily. When we’re shining the light on our true selves that spotlight can feel particularly intense and glaring.

As an author, I’m always sharing bits and pieces of myself in my books. Yes, even the scary flawed parts that I’d prefer to pretend don’t exist. To a certain degree, expressing those parts through fiction and another character’s life experience makes it easier when it comes to sharing my vulnerabilities, and in the process I’ll hopefully connect with readers in a way that goes beyond just words on a page. One of the greatest joys I get out of my job as an author is getting an email from a reader and having them share their own experiences with me. In those instances, it’s always a reminder that although it might be scarier than hell to expose so much of myself through my writing, the payoff is always worth it if it means something in the book resonated with a reader.

In my latest book, Checking It Twice, the theme of exposure plays a dominant role with all three characters. For Jana and Nick, who are both exhibitionists at heart, it’s a given that they not only crave baring their bodies and their emotions, it’s an inherent need that makes up a large part of the core of their identities. Kevin, on the other hand, fears exposing the demons that comprise his past, and as a result, he keeps those blinders concealing his inner self locked down tight. But at the same time, his voyeurism is essentially the link that forms his needed connection to others. It’s what draws him to Jana and Nick like a moth to a flame. But it’s also what he perceives as the key to his destruction, since giving in to his desire and love for Jana will mean exposing and confronting all of the very things that he’s struggled to keep under lock and key.

**Excerpt**

Nick shifted his position, his free hand grasping Jana’s nape seconds before his mouth covered hers in a devouring kiss that was far wickeder than the one Kevin had walked in on three days ago. He’d witnessed Nick in action too many times to count and was no stranger to the power of his seduction. Even so, those past instances were a pale shadow of the raw, animalistic hunger inherent in Nick’s performance now.

He knew without any doubt Nick was seducing him as equally as he was Jana. The son of a bitch knew his weaknesses. Knew how to fucking get him. Much as it infuriated Kevin, he couldn’t do a damn thing about it.

Temptation a hypnotic siren in his head, Kevin unconsciously took a halting step forward, his gut tensing. As if he’d sensed Kevin’s approach, Nick coasted his hand down Jana’s rib cage and caressed her hip before disappearing beneath her skirt. A moment later, he awarded Kevin with a tantalizing flash of Jana’s bare butt cheek.

Lust nailing him square in the groin, Kevin hissed in a breath. Just like the other night, she was bare-ass naked under the skirt.

Nick released Jana but kept her close, his palm brushing her waist. He gazed directly at Kevin, the intent in his eyes a silent demand. Play time.

Kevin swallowed, the unbreakable chain of his addiction shackling him tight. He took several more stiff-legged steps until he was standing in front of the two individuals responsible for annihilating his defenses. Jana’s breath hitched in uneven gasps. “K-Kevin…” Clouds of worry mingled with the desire dilating her pupils.

As if he’d intuited her hesitation, Nick massaged her shoulder before lightly kissing her temple. The look he offered Kevin was substantially less soothing.

“She didn’t know what my plans were tonight. If you’re going to be pissed at anyone for what’s about to go down, make it me.”

He clenched his jaw. “What makes you think anything is about to happen?”

“Because I know you. And you better fucking believe I know myself. This is who we are. A big part of what makes us tick and fulfills us. I’m not going to deny that part of myself. You damn well shouldn’t either.”

His muscles tensed and rigid, he watched as Nick sipped at Jana’s lips again before murmuring to her softly and taking her hand. Her mouth trembling, she gave him one last pleading stare and turned to follow Nick. They headed toward the wrought-iron stairway leading to the upper level, and Kevin cursed under his breath. The motherfucker must have reserved one of the private rooms. Of course he did. There was no way in hell Nick would have risked a thirty-minute drive that might have granted Kevin a shot at cooling off.

Like a cornered beast, he tracked their journey as they ascended the stairs. Nick’s palm slid beneath Jana’s skirt again, providing a longer and even more mouthwatering view of her delectable, heart-shaped ass. Liquid lust boiled inside Kevin, disintegrating his willpower. No force on earth would save him now. Balling his fists in rigid defeat, he stalked after them.

They reached the landing, and Nick glanced back at him, not bothering to hide the relief and approval evident on his face. “They gave us room 208.”

Kevin gestured toward the hall ahead of them, and Nick led Jana in that direction. Once they reached the right door, Kevin slid his member card into the slot and twisted the handle. He stepped into the room first and scanned its interior. Far as rooms at Arabesque went, it was one of the tamer ones. A four-poster bed with black satin sheets that were regularly replaced with each new occupant. Varying padded cushions in different shapes stacked to one side on the floor, all used for helping maintain certain sexual positions. A table occupied the opposite corner, its surface holding a gamut of unused plugs, vibrators, lubes and condoms. You name it, the club had you covered. The only major concession to kink was the sex swing hooked to a spring over the bed. Kevin couldn’t take his damn eyes off it. At least not until Jana and Nick stepped into his line of vision.

Jana gnawed her lip. “Can I just remind you that I’m the only one in this room who’s never been in a situation like this before? I’m kind of lost here.”

Nick hugged her in reassurance. “There’s no reason to be nervous.”

“Easy for you to say.”

Brushing his lips over hers, Nick halted her troubled words. His hands drifted to her breasts. Circling his thumbs over her nipples, he broke their kiss to watch the motion of his fingers. “Are you wearing my present?”

“Y-yes.”

“Good girl. Do you think we should show Kev?”

Breath hitching in her throat, Jana nodded.

“I do too.” Nick pinched the ends of the bow securing Jana’s top. Giving a tug, he carefully freed the satin ribbon.

Kevin’s heart raced at the excruciatingly slow unveiling. Finally the fabric gave, and the soft fullness of Jana’s breasts inched the top open. Nick slid the garment from Jana’s arms and let it drop to the carpet. Like a moth drawn to flame, Kevin zeroed in on the small silver hoops and dangling beads decorating her nipples. His mouth went a thousand degrees of dry. “Sweet Jesus.”

“No. Sweet Jana.” Giving a hum of approval, Nick gently tugged the tiny beads, making her nipples tighten. “I knew these would look fantastic on you. Are you wearing the rest of what I gave you?”

Kevin gulped. There was more? He was never going to fucking survive this.

“The Harvesting” by Melanie Karsak

What if your grandmother was a psychic?
What if she had foreseen the end of mankind?
What if you were our only chance for survival?

Though Layla reluctantly returns home to rural Hamletville after a desperate call from her psychic grandmother, she could never have anticipated the horror of what Grandma Petrovich has foreseen. The residents of Hamletville will need Layla's help if they are to survive the zombie apocalypse that's upon them. But that is not the only problem. With mankind silenced, it soon becomes apparent that we were never alone. As the beings living on the fringe seek to reclaim power, Layla must find a way to protect the ones she loves or all humanity may be lost.

Meet the Characters of “The Harvesting”:
To help readers get a sense of the people and events in the novel “The Harvesting,” following you will find bios on the main characters.  I have also provided media images of which actors/actresses might best depict the characters if the novel were ever to grace the silver screen.

Meet Layla Petrovich, Protagonist (envisioned as Olivia Wilde)
Family background: Layla was raised by her Russian immigrant grandmother, Vasilisa Petrovich, in the small town of Hamletville on the shores of Lake Erie.  Layla’s mother ran off when she was young, and the identity of her father is unknown.  Layla’s upbringing, raised by the town’s resident medium, often left her feeling ostracized by her community.
Occupation: Before Z-Day, Layla worked as a museum curator at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.  In addition, Layla taught fencing classes to local high school students.  All that changed the day Layla’s grandmother called and told her to “come home.”
Apocalypse skills: When ammo runs dry, it’s Layla’s shashka, a Russian sabre, which saves the day.  But this is not her only skill.  Grandma’s psychic foresight also ensured Layla was well armed with a Glock 17 semi-automatic, a Colt 9mm sub-machine gun, and a .44 Magnum.  In addition to Layla’s physical strength, her keen intellect and budding psychic abilities help her keep her loved ones safe.
Romantic attachments: Layla left Hamletville and tried to start again, but in her heart she always pined for her first love, Ian.  Her return to Hamletville brings into question these buried feelings and strange new emotions she feels for Jaime, Ian’s older brother.

Meet Jamie Campbell (envisioned as Chris Pine)
Family background:  Like Layla, Jamie is a Hamletville native.  He and his brother Ian grew up behind the counter of their father’s feed and lumber shop.
Occupation: Before Z-Day, Jamie did two tours in Iraq as a combat medic.
Apocalypse skills: Jamie is a handy guy to have around.  He is a physically strong, a good shot, and his medical skills make him a life saver—literally.  Without Jamie, many of the people in Hamletville would have died.
Romantic attachments: Jamie has been searching, unsuccessfully, for a girl with something special.  He has had relationships over the years, but no one ever suited him.  But when Layla returns to Hamletville, even in the midst of the horror unfolding all around them, Jamie finally begins to see what he has been missing.

Meet Ian Campbell (envisioned as Dominic Monaghan)
Family background: Ian, brother of Jamie, is the youngest of Hamletville’s Clan Campbell.  Ian and his wife Kristie have been married for four years.  Tragically, Kristie is bitten during the first days of the zombie apocalypse.
Occupation: Before Z-Day, Ian worked alongside his father, managing with family business: Campbell Feed and Lumber.
Apocalypse skills: Ian is good with a gun and brave to a fault.  There is no job too hard or ethically vexing for Ian.
Romantic attachments: Ian’s first love was Layla.  It is a love he has not forgotten.  Years back, Ian and Layla fought, and Ian had a one-night stand with Kristie.  Kristie got pregnant.  Ian left Layla to do the right thing and marry the mother of his unborn child, but he never stopped loving Layla.  For Ian, the zombie apocalypse provides him the chance at a “do-over.”  Only problem is, Ian is not feeling so well these days . . . well, that’s just one of his problems.

Meet Rumor (envisioned as Lucy Lawless)
Background: Not much is known about Rumor other than she is from Eastern Europe and that she ages really, really well.  In fact, Rumor may not even be her real name.
Occupation:Proprietor of the HarpWind Grand Hotel.
Apocalypse skills:Cultivating food supplies.
Romantic attachments:Rumor finds herself instantly enamored with Ian’s physicality.

Meet Cricket (envisioned as Lily Cole)
Family Background:Cricket, a carnie girl, was raised by her father in the carnie lifestyle.  Cricket grew up a daddy’s girl and was crushed when her father died suddenly of a heart attack.
Occupation: Before Z-Day, Cricket was a Tilt-a-Whirl operator.  She felt it was her duty to her father’s memory to live the carnie life.
Apocalypse skills:Practicality. Cricket is neither superstitious nor super-powered.  Her pipe wrench and common sense helped her survive the moment of the zombie apocalypse.  She also has sense enough to listen to others, including the carnival Tarot reader, Vella.
Romantic attachments:Cricket likes to play around a bit with the “Townies,” but has never really fallen in love.  In fact, she never really bothered worrying about “true love” because she finds such daydreams romantic nonsense.  She does, however, love her dog, Puck, with a passion.
Join these characters in “The Harvesting,” by Melanie Karsak available as Kindle and paperback at Amazon.com and for Nook, Apple, and other e-readers at Smashwords.com.

Review & Giveaway: Bodyguards by Kallysten

Title: Bodyguards
Series: Quicksilver Codex #1
Author: Kallysten
Tour: No
Published: November 2012
Format: Ebook provided by author for review

On the verge of her twentieth birthday, Vivien’s worries are those of a typical young woman: doing well in college, gaining more independence, and maybe managing to show Brad, her classmate and sometimes jogging partner, that she wouldn’t mind taking their burgeoning relationship to a different level.

Everything changes in the blink of an eye. Vivien stumbles into a knife fight, watches a man die in front of her, and soon listens, stunned, as Brad and his brother Aedan tell her a story of magic, vampires and a murderous ruler intent on killing a princess in hiding – a tale in which she is the princess and heir to a realm she didn’t know existed.

Vivien’s first instinct is to refuse to believe this incredible tale, even if it comes from a man she is attracted to. But when her self-proclaimed bodyguards use magic to take her to a different world, the edges of reality start blurring and Vivien has to figure out who she truly is.

This is my first book from author Kallysten and I’ve been totally blown away. I really loved Bodyguards. Bodyguards tells the story of a 19 year old woman, weeks shy of her twentieth birthday. Her name is Vivien. And her whole life is about to change.

Right away the book starts on an eerie note – a nightmare. Something about getting this type of an insight to a characters mind always makes me empathize with them a bit more. Dreams are pretty intimate, and when they are nightmares you really get to get a peak at what can really drive a person. The whole first chapter is just filled with this foreboding aura, and it had me flipping pages as quick as I could.

But its not all doom and gloom. There’s a love interest here by the name of Brad. And Vivien has a crush on him. And she gets the courage to ask him out. And Brad denies her. I really had to laugh at Vivien’s reaction when he turned her down. I would have (sadly) reacted the same way. The fact that I could see a bit of myself in Vivien really endeared me to her a bit more.

As the blurb says, Vivien witnesses a knife fight, and then learns the truth about Brad – and his twin brother Aedan. They are sworn by oath to be her bodyguards, and she is a princess. Then they take her to Foh’Ran, an alternate world. I really am not a “portal” person. I don’t go for the swirling mist, the rippled circle, whatever it is that characters use to jump from one world to another. But Kallysten may change my stance on that. There’s not all kinds of focus on the actual portal, which is something I am grateful for. And the other world of Foh’Ran, although it may not be as modern, is certainly an interesting world. It is full of beauty, and for lack of a better word, magic. Although its residents would scoff, and insist you call it what it is – The Quickening. There are vampires and channelers, Quickening shields and castles. And this is where Vivien really learns more about herself, and how she is descended from Foh’Ran royalty.

A bit about Brad, cause I love a leading man. He’s everything a leading woman dreams of, aside from available. Brad has a thing about being “proper” and as it annoyed Vivien, it annoyed me. But luckily for us all, Brad is not all brawn – he definitely has brains. And ladies, keep an eye out for him. At one point he makes a speech to Vivien that made me stop breathing and pant at the same time. Killed me and repaired me all at once. And I am more than sure it had the same effect on Vivien.

One character who I thought was infinitely interesting was Aedan. Aedan, whose life took an entirely different turn than his brother, has some obvious issues he should work out. But I really want to know his back story in more depth. I found him to be so intriguing and… barely harnessed. I won’t blow any secrets about him, but suffice it to say I thought he was fascinating. And as I like to harass authors, I might have to see if I can pry any information to see if Aedan will be featured more prominently in the future. There is also the matter of a woman named Ciara, whom definitely needs more face time with the readers in the future!

I really enjoyed this story. I can’t wait for the rest of the series to be released. The characters and the world were captivating. And there is a beautiful first kiss, one befitting a princes – or any girl who has given her heart away. I am a sucker for a good kiss, and Vivien’s definitely lived up to my hopes.

I just finished the book this afternoon, so I have not yet researched (read: stalked Kallysten’s website) to see what’s in store, but I know I definitely will be in line when the next book in the Quicksilver Codex is released.

And guess what!  Kallysten is offering a giveaway of Bodyguards to one lucky reader!  Just fill out the Rafflecopter below, and good luck!  Giveaway is International and ends 11-30-12

Owlet by Emma Michaels: Excerpt, Guest Post, and Tour Giveaway

Owlet
Society of Feathers, #1
Emma Michaels

Somewhere between falling and flying… there is a girl.

Iris has a secret. She lost her memory eight years ago and never told a living soul. After an asthma attack one night she finds out that her dreams of a strange house on a snowy island may be a memory resurfacing but the more she learns about the past the more she realizes the life she has been living is a lie. As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.

***Excerpt for Read-Along***
The water felt like hundreds of knives slicing into Falcon’s skin, ice cold and deadly. He knew the water was tearing half of his soul from his body and soon all he would have was instinct if he could just keep moving.

I won’t last long but neither will she. I can’t lose her again. I can’t lose her. Please, Iris, hang in there. Please...you don’t know how much you mean to me. Iris! He saw her, swimming deeper he grabbed her leg and pulled it towards him. Reaching his arm around her stomach, Falcon held her to his side and started to swim for the surface. He couldn’t think anymore, just act, but his body seemed to be fueling a type of primal fear when he realized he was carrying dead weight. She wasn’t moving.

Her soul had never been separated from her body before. She might not make it. He got to the surface and Diana was waiting. He felt like he was about to collapse but he picked Iris up, draping her over both of his arms, and started to run for the house. Diana was running by their side. “You won’t last long. I don’t even know how you are still breathing.”

Falcon wanted to answer her but part of his soul was still adjusting, still trying to mend the wounds the water had just made deep inside him. Even if he could speak, the cold water made his teeth chatter too fiercely for any words to escape. You have no idea what I can or cannot do for Iris. I would do anything for her.

Iris in the Garden Drawing
By Emma Michaels

I have always had a love for art, even before I was able to draw stick figures. Which, by the way, I was terrible at even doing that until the sixth grade when I found a teacher who said no artists are “good” or “bad” at art, they either do it or they don’t. So I decided to become a better artist and over the years… well, I can do more than stick figures now! In fact, I am a cover artist for a number of publishers and love to help designers bring their silk screen designs to life in my free time.

So naturally, as my ideas for Owlet grew, so did my collection of sketches of the characters. I have decided to give away four sketches and one partial acrylic painting or Iris for the release. This particular sketch was done with a pen only last year. Elena’s garden has played some part in each of the drafts of Owlet. In some version it played a small part and in others a very large one but it was always there.

While sitting by the side of a large window at a friend’s house I was looking out at her garden and daydreaming about the garden from Owlet. I imagined what it would be like to just lay there in that garden surrounded by all of the beauty. I pulled my sketch book out and started to draw. As first just a few little flowers making a heart, then a stick of lavender, a poppy and a long stemmed rose and before you know it, I was drawing Iris.

I ended up liking the piece so much that I kept it - until now. I want someone to get to share that wonderful garden fantasy.
