Want a “supernatural” husband? Think again.

I am so happy to be here again on Fictional Candy! Yay! Many thanks to the lady Liz. And to be here for Hallowe’en is even better because this is by far my favorite holiday in the calendar. A day full of ghosties and vampires and ghouls. Awesome.

Or is it?

For any of you who know me, you’ll know I tend to write paranormal romance. And like any other lover of the genre, it’s because I am entranced by the idea of ending up with a buff, sexy supernatural lover on my arm…or other chosen appendage.

Weeeelll, let me say this. I am married to a wonderful man. And in a way, he fulfills the criteria of being a supernatural dude.  He has a special ability.

You guessed it. My husband sees dead people.

He’s not a full-blown psychic; it’s not on his resume. He’s a banker. However, my man has been having visions of the dead for many years now. It started when he was a baby. His parents used to drive by a cemetery on the way home. Hubby would sit in the back of the car and point to imaginary people in the graveyard and talk about the men and ladies there.

Chills.

And now that he’s an adult, he’s “communicated” with all sorts of dead family members. A psychic once told him it’s because of his Irish blood. Those Irish seem to have a direct channel to the paranormal world! As a practical Italian, it can be scary stuff!

Lately, hubby has informed me of a spirit man who wanders through our bedroom. I love knowing that…especially when I’m home alone.

Anyway, those preternatural guys can be fun in the books, but you may want to ask a few probing questions of your next date before you marry the guy:

1)    Do the dead visit you? Are they scary dead folk?

2)    Why do you keep looking over your shoulder when there’s nothing there?

3)    Are any of your pals invisible?

These questions should be able to help you determine if you’re going forward in that relationship!

I saw a couple reviews from friends saying this book was shocking and terrific, and on top of what I already know about Kitty Thomas’ writing, suffice it to say I was practically frothing at the mouth (eyes?) to read this book. I had no idea what was inside, I’d managed to stay free of every spoiler. And so I am going to give you the same chance. No spoilers, no secrets. Just be warned, Kitty’s work isn’t for the everyday romance reader - or heck, for a romance reader at all if we were all to be honest about it. You need to like things a little different (or a lot), and enjoy being shocked, and sometimes scared as much as titillated by what you’ve read. Kitty ain’t your mainstream author, she’s a special variant that I can’t recommend enough!

Ok, the book. Big Sky. The cover is beyond gorgeous. It’s dreamy and romantic (and I mean that in a non-love/romance way, but in a "oh, look at the freedom of this wide open space and the joy it gives me!" kind of way), and it gives the impression of freedom ahead. And Veronica has been living on such a tight line she barely sees the sky any more. Every day is a struggle to get to the next, and life ain’t easy. And just when you think you’ve got as much as you can handle, you get more. And then a little bit more. Do you trust the handsome stranger, even when your internal alarms warn that might not be the best idea?

“You had to work for money to pay your bills to live. Working wasn’t an option you did just because you liked it. You were a wage slave. Just because its packaged up like free will doesn’t mean it’s the recipe for happiness.”

This handsome strangers name is Luke. He’s a rancher, and he’s offering Veronica an escape. Maybe its wrong of me, but I loved Luke. He’s a bit… alternative. But he reeks of alpha male. His ranch hands know it, and Veronica knows it. It doesn't hurt that he is sexy.  Sure, the guy has some baggage, but who doesn't?? He's not offering Veronica what you'd expect, he's not exactly a white knight.

I agree with other reviewers, this book will shock you. It’s subject matter was a first for me. Kitty wrote it all so perfectly, she can make the unusual seem like an every day occurance. And that’s what I love. With her writing she gives the reader the freedom to explore a different side. This story was fantastic, I was enthralled from the first to the last page. And that’s about all I can tell you without spoiling the whole story! Do yourself a favor, don’t look for spoilers elsewhere. Just read the story, and keep an open mind.

The story behind BLIND TO MEN: I was shopping at the store one morning, trying to grab a tin of green beans when a weird thought struck me: what would it be like to wake up in a world without men? Yes I know, I got scared too J but it gave me the thread that eventually became BLIND TO MEN.

My novella is centered on Anya, a farm girl who has been cursed at birth. So she can't see men, and she has no idea they even exist. As a result, she's naïve, sincere, spontaneous, sometimes ignorant of basic facts of life.

When the Queen of Palance requests Anya's presence at court, the young farm girl must leave her mother as well as her life to follow her new protector, a strange Amazon who's definitely the ugliest woman Anya has ever seen. Together they'll hit the road to Palance. Their relationship will evolve as Anya comes to realize there's more to her guardian than meets the eye. And I won't say more…

Fantasy stories always get me, so I can assure you I had great fun writing BLIND TO MEN. I do hope you'll enjoy reading it. In the meantime, good luck to you all!

A few days ago I reviewed One Good Man, which is book one in the The Man series.  Now Take This Man is book two.  And things just got kicked up a notch.  I wasn’t expecting to like Adam Vostek more than his brother Matthew.  In fact, I kind of thought he was a jerk when he made his appearance in book one.   Yeah, sure, he had his reasons…whatever.  He was a bit of a jerk.  But now in this book we get to peel back his layers a bit, and there is really quite a gem of a man there.

This story has a few flashbacks in it, and they really help round out the story.  This one is split between Adam’s and Elyse’s point of view.  Elyse is Adam’s ex, and she has a pretty good reason to have a dislike of Adam.  At one point its said that she could actually hear her heart cracking as it broke, and I can totally believe it.  The woman has been through a lot in her relatively young life.  She’s in her early 20s, but she definitely has the wisdom of an older woman who has had more experiences.  I definitely felt connected to Elyse, even as I wanted to push her to move forward with this situation or that one. 

And then there is Jason.  There is not a whole lot I can tell you about him without giving up some major spoilers.  But I like him.  He is funny and intelligent, and he cares a lot about the people in his life.  He is quite the character, and I can only imagine that it was fun to write him.

“With her heart beating in her chest, Elyse crossed the street.  Her feet slowed, and her eyes remained glued to the truck.  It felt surreal.  Had her thoughts about Adam somehow conjured him?”

The thing about real true love is that you never ever get over it.  Even when love does you wrong and you don’t end up with the person you are supposed to.  You still never get over it.  That person is always there.  They are in the back of your mind, living as a benchmark for every love that will come after them.  You think you’ve moved on, you think you can forget them… but you are wrong. You’ll see something the exact shade of their eyes, someone will walk by in a crowd wearing their cologne, you’ll pass their favorite food in the grocery store – and just like that they are right there in the front of your brain.  So when you subconsciously place yourself right in their path, you should not really be surprised.  And this is what happens in Take This Man. 

Much in the way any dramatic and wonderful love story must go, there are misunderstandings galore within these pages.  What is it about two people in love?  Do they forget all rational means of communication?  Sometimes it leads to funny situations, sometimes frustration, and sometimes tears.  And in this book you will find all of that.

“By the time he manned up and faced his feelings for her, she was long gone.”

This book has its bits of humor.  And there are cameos from some of my favorites from One Good Man.  And if you can’t tell by now, I think you should read it.  But start with the first book.  This book is a great emotional story, and now I am totally geared up for the next book in the series, Her Perfect Man, which I have coming up on a review post for Nona Raines tour in the beginning of November.  See you then!

Thank you, Liz. It is an honour to be here.

First, can you tell our readers a little bit about your blog, b00k r3vi3ws by DDS?

It is basically a place for me to vent out about books… My parents and hubby like to read too but not as much as me. [I am actually known as the ‘crazy book lady’ amongst my friends.] At first I used to vent out by commenting on other blogs but soon that wasn’t enough and I just had to start my own blog. Though I also do Author Interviews, Guest Posts and participate in blog tours, most of my posts are Reviews. Sometimes they are short & sweet and sometimes they are long & ranting – they just depend upon my mood after reading the book.

And how long have you been blogging?

I have been blogging for about 2 years now. My first blog was basically a journal that I set as private – only for my eyes. I started ‘b00k r3vi3ws’ around mid-February’2012.

What would you say is your favorite part of the book blogging world?

I have to say that I love the general attitude here – always welcoming and open minded. But what I love the most is how my reading habits have changed under the influence of the blogging world. Previously I was very selective and would read only well-known authors and stick to mystery/thrillers. Now my taste has broadened at least ten folds. Yes, I read a lot more of paranormal, fantasy, chic-lit, nonfiction… and I have discovered a love for Indie Authors! I discovered some of my recent favourites thanks to this community.

Debdatta, do you have a must read book, something that you find yourself recommending over and over?

I feel all kids should go through an Enid Blyton phase in their lives – without that, no matter how much you read, your reading experience will always be incomplete. Besides that I keep recommending people to read ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’ – it is a complete classic and a must read for any book lover. It has romance, action, adventure, politics… and for those who read very closely, you may learn a lesson or two.

How about what you are reading now?  Can you give us a little teaser?

I am currently reading Phantom by Jo Nesbø. I am about halfway through and let me tell you it is simply AWESOME. The plot, the characters and the language are all exquisite.  Here’s how the book starts:

Amid the noises of the night in downtown Oslo – the regular drone of cars outside the window, the distant siren that rose and fell and the church bells that had begun to chime nearby – a rat went on the hunt for food. She ran her nose over the filthy linoleum on the kitchen floor. The pungent smell of gray cigarette ash. The sugary-sweet aroma of blood on a scotton gauze. The bitter odor of beer on the inside of the bottle cap, Ringnes Lager. What do you do when you aren’t blogging?

I wish I could say only ‘read’! But I am a Human Resource Professional. I work full time. Besides that, I take care of my family. I like to Dance and Swim. I am also into writing letters and have a few pals over the world with whom I exchange old fashioned hand written mail every now and then.

If you could only read print books or eBooks for the rest of your life, which one would you pick and why?

Print Books. Reading e-books on laptop/Nook/Mobile is very uncomfortable for me. My eyes start watering if I read for few hours at a stretch. Besides, there’s a certain charm in reading books the old fashioned way! Nothing can beat its smell (old or new) or the feel of it when you hold it in your hands. Give me a never ending supply of coffee and print books and I’ll find heaven sitting on my bean bag J

If you could bring one book to life, which one would it be (and why!)?

I would probably redo Harry Potter because the movie series missed out on most of my favourite parts – I mean Half-Blood Prince without the Hogwarts Battle? Or maybe Sons of Fortune by Jeffery Archer.

Looking through your site, you have some great organization – something I love!  Do you find that it is easy to keep up with that or is it tough?  Do you have any tips?

Thank you! At the moment I am still in the process of updating the Review index and it is kind of boring to go back and check all the reviews from the beginning. But I am sure once I am up to date on it, it will be only too easy for me. You see I have a mild case of OCD… okay, maybe not so mild and maybe I am more like Monica from Friends than I care to admit :P 

I seriously do not know if I can give tips. I am still learning the ropes myself. But yes the best way to do it is to keep it simple.

What kind of things can we look forward to in the next year from b00k r3vi3ws?

I have been reading for about 20 years now and blogging for a few months. So you can expect a LOT of reviews of old & new books. And yes, you can take it for granted that the look and feel will keep changing as I will keep experimenting. Also, I have quite a few very interesting Books/Authors lined up for my ‘Special Feature’ program. Also, I have to admit that you have inspired me to come up with “New Girl on the Blog” – a blogger on blogger interview that will feature only newbie Girl bloggers. I have done a couple of posts already for a trial run – just to see the response . I will
