Last week I had the extreme pleasure of reviewing Supernaturally Kissed by Stacey Kennedy.  That review is HERE.  This week I have the even better pleasure of interviewing Stacey, herself!  Here's that interview, hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Hi  Stacey, it’s nice to talk to you again!  Happy Leap Year Day!  (that’s a holiday, right? LOL).

 LOL! It has to be!! It’s always great to be here!

So I’ve just recently finished Supernaturally Kissed.  What a great story!  Can you tell our readers something about this story that isn’t in the synopsis?

Thanks! All in all, the Frostbite series is about a woman who has a gift to talk to ghosts. It’s the journey of her understanding why she can do this and each book in the series will give more answers. But within each book there will be a mystery of some kind that has to be solved and there’s also the romance between Tess and Kipp—a ghost that has stolen Tess’s heart.

And how did you come about the characters of Kipp and Tess?

It was odd really, but this story just smacked into my head when I was writing another. I liked the idea of a woman paired with a ghost and all the conflict that came along with it. To be honest, I had no clue how the series would unfold when I started writing SUPERNATURALLY KISSED. But after I wrote the second book, DEMONICALLY TEMPTED it became clear cut. I know exactly what will happen in all four of the books and how the series will end.

I really loved Tess’s best friend Caley.  She was very personal and fun, with a wild side.  Will we see more of her in the future?

YAH! I’m so happy you enjoyed, Caley. Some people love her while others want to hurt her. LOL! But that’s just how her character developed. She’s very protective over her friend, Tess and that’s because of what Tess goes through. But Caley is also very overbearing and in your face.

The thing I love about their friendship is that Caley isn’t perfect. She has major flaws. And while some might think her annoying for that reason, I love her for it. It makes their friendship more real to me because people are flawed. But one thing is so strong between them and that’s loyalty. Caley accepts Tess with all her ghost seeing abilities and Tess accepts Caley for her pushy ways. It’s a friendship that I really enjoy to write.

And yes, you will see more of Caley. She has a very small role in book two of the Frostbite series, which is currently in the hands of my editor. But she will also make appearances in all of the other books as well. Truthfully, I’d really LOVE to write a novella about Caley and Zach, so that might be in the future too!

If you were making a movie of Supernaturally Kissed, who would play Tess and Kipp?

 For Tess Jennings, I’d have Olivia Wilde. She is an exact image of the Tess that I see in my mind. The picture below couldn’t be more perfect.

For Kipp, I’d want Paul Walker. Of course, he’d have to wear a colored contact to make one eye brown to be the perfect Kipp, but he’s pretty much spot on too.

So Stacey, do you like to listen to music or munch on anything while writing, or is it straight to business with no distractions?

It’s usually straight down to business. I can’t listen to music because it’s too distracting and I can’t focus. I’ve grown used to listening to my kids in the background so I can tune them out. Now I tend to write at the local Starbucks and it’s a busy place, but that kind of noise I can ignore. I really love music and am known to sing in my car so it’s really hard for me to be listening to music when I write because all I’ll end up doing is singing.

You also write some wonderful erotica and romantic erotica.  Is it hard to switch between a UF type story and a naughty erotica story?

 No not hard at all, but I’ll tell you that I can only write urban fantasy when I’m in the mood to write it. Erotic romance is easy to write in a way because of the subject matter. It’s not hard to get in the “mood” to write a sizzling hot story. However, when I write UF I need to be really rested and super focused to write it because it has more complicated plot lines. I have to really want to write the story and have that itch and excitement over it or it won’t happen. UF, though, is my favorite genre to write in so it makes me blissfully happy when I’m in that zone!

And lastly, what can we look forward to from you in the upcoming months?

 Oh, there are so many releases it’s hard to wrap my head around it. The next Frostbite book, DEMONICALLY TEMPTED will hopefully make its way out into the world. It’s completed and ready to edit, so I’m hoping it’ll be out in a couple months or so.

BEG FOR IT, the next Pact of Seduction book comes out around the end of May. It’s a VERY HOT BDSM erotic romance novella and I enjoyed writing every word of that book. I do believe it might be my favorite novella ever!

In July, WEREWOLVES BE DAMNED will be released, which is coming out in trade paperback. I love the heroine, Nexi so I’m very excited to get these full-length novels out there.

And lastly, I’m still plugging away at THE CAT’S MEOW. It’s more than half done and in fact, all the chapters are mapped out, but I just haven’t had the time to get back to it. It’s going to be a self-published novel so once it’s ready it’ll be out nice and quick.

So yes, busy, busy times, but lots of fun book releases!!

I didn’t take many notes on this book, because I could barely put it down!  It was a superb read, and I can’t wait to read Book Two!

Lianne is a handmaiden to the queen of Fithia, Mags.  But Mags is also a friend, one of the few that Lianne really has.  Of course there’s her boyfriend, Kellan, and the other adoptee into Fithia, Bryden.  But that’s about it.  She’s never really been a part of the society she lived in from the time she was a baby, and never knowing her own homeland, she was almost alone her entire life.

Then on the morning of her sixteenth birthday Lianne wakes up angry.  It’s not just a passing mood; it’s a rage at what’s been done to her, Kellan, and Bryden since they were adopted into Fithia as part of a treaty at the end of the war between the Dalagans and the Fithians.  

Kellan is dark and sexy, the “bad boy” young girls dream about.  He makes Lianne feel alive and ready to live, ready to fight.  And then there is Bryden, the third adoptee.  He was injured as a boy and has a permanent limp.  He’s book smart, not so much the fighter that Lianne and Kellan are.  Odd man out, you’d think.  That is, until Lianne wakes up angry.  Bryden is the boy who brings her to calmness and serenity.  Maybe not what she wants at the moment, but what she needs, right?

I really loved this love triangle.  It was hard to tell who to trust at different points in the story.  In the tug of war over Lianne’s heart, I often felt myself switching sides between Bryden and Kellan.  Lead with your heart, or lead with your head? 

When Lianne goes through her “awakening” and she wakes up knowing the secrets that have been hidden from her for her entire life regarding the war between the two sets of people.   I thought this was a very unique plot twist that I haven’t seen yet…children under a magical spell until their sixteenth birthday.  Brilliant idea, in my opinion. 

Lianne is getting different information from almost every place she turns to for answers.  I was right there with her, trying to figure out whom to trust and who not to.  It seems no one really knows what the real answer is.  Her whole life has been a secret and a lie. 

When the truth finally comes out it is explosive!  There is nonstop action, and I actually felt joy at the impending war that was certain to come next.  I know, that sounds bad, right?  But it meant freedom for the adopted kids who really never knew family, never knew their history, their people.

But wait!  The secrets aren’t over, oh no, not by a long shot.  And when things are brought to light, and Lianne discovers that what you think is good is not always good, and what you thought was bad was not entirely wrong… well, it rocks her world and everything she believed.  The plot twists in this story will definitely keep you reading and waiting anxiously to find out what happens next.  As for me, I’m happily waiting until June of this year for book two, Afterlife.

The “Rules”

I don’t play by the rules. I never have.

In my life and in my work, I have never simply gone from Point A to Point B in a straight line. There are curves, major detours, regressions, and a few pretty good surprises before I reach the end point. I’m stubborn that way … I’m stubborn, period. But in a world where there is so much pressure to conform — to follow the straight and narrow — I had to find my own way, follow my own path. Maybe that’s why I decided, intentionally or not, to break the rules.

It’s not that I “broke” the rules, exactly, but that I chose not to follow the crowd. I want to believe that my life as an artist — writer, painter, composer — is just like that of an investment broker, or a hair stylist, or a police officer. I don’t see a difference but some of the people around me do because I don’t get up daily to go into an office. My life isn’t regimented by some conglomerate’s employment contract.

My work isn’t perceived as “real work” because I don’t have funds deposited into my chequing account every two weeks. I don’t have to ask permission to take a day off. I have it “easy” because I can get up when I want, do what I want when I want. I guess, to some, I’m not playing by the “rules”.

Being a writer — an artist — takes courage. As artists, we open up ourselves, and our artwork, to criticism. It’s courageous because we have dared to dream, and then set to work to make the dream pass into reality. It was courage as much as stubbornness that made me push and push until I found a publisher willing to take a chance on Freestyle Love.

Goethe told us to “Dream no small dreams for they have no power to move the hearts of men.” I dare to dream no small dreams, and if that means breaking the rules, then I’m all for it. For too long I stood where two roads diverged. But unlike Robert Frost, I’m not sorry that I cannot travel both. For when I “looked down as far as I could,” one road, flooded, waters as high as the knee, the sun still shone bright with possibility and hope. The other road was steep in snow through which a path had already been trod. I’m taking “the road less traveled by,” for I do believe that it will make all the difference.

Hi Laura! So glad to see you today!

Thanks so much for hosting me! I'm very excited to meet you and your readers.

Your books, Embers and Sparks, both take place in Detroit. I am so excited about this since I live in the area, and don’t get to see it too often in books. Why did you pick Detroit as the setting for Anya Kalinczyk?

My husband is from Detroit, and it was wonderful to have him play tour guide for me. Detroit has some very magical places that are easily reimagined into landscapes for a book. And the Detroit Salt Mine, which stretches beneath the city. It became the perfect place for a dragon's lair. Michigan Central Station became a way station for ghosts moving into the afterlife.

So Laura, your husband is from the Detroit area, and you are from Ohio… I’ll skip the question about rivals, and ask if you have a favorite place to visit in Michigan?

Ha. Yes, he went to Michigan and I went to Ohio State. Fortunately, I'm not big into football, so there is no internal household rivalry. ;-)

The place I loved most was the Detroit Institute of Arts. I saw the pieces of the Ishtar Gate on display there, and worked that into the mythology of EMBERS. Anya became an avatar of Ishtar, and I had her return to visit the museum ghosts in SPARKS.

You write about Detroit beautifully, when its not especially a favorite destination among travelers. Is there something you would like your readers to take away from your books regarding this city?

Thank you! I want readers to know that there is incredible beauty, power, and magic in the city. Everywhere I looked, I found a story. There's so much history - from speakeasies to the churches - and I wanted to explore that for the reader.

I see you have a wide range of studies, from criminology to politics to even library science and IT. How did these fields help you write the Anya Kalinczyk books?

I spent around ten years working in and around criminal justice, so I wanted to accurately get the feel of a criminal investigation in the book. I did a lot of research in arson investigation, which is far afield of my own personal experience. That's where working in a library comes in - I love the research aspect of writing a story. I think it's important to get those small details right, to make the story seem 'real.'

I’ve learned you are also interested in Tarot. What about Tarot draws you to it?

I've puttered around with Tarot since I was a teenager. I love the images, and the cards make great story prompts.

Under my Alayna Williams pseudonym, I'm the author of DARK ORACLE and ROGUE ORACLE, which follow the adventures of Tara Sheridan, a criminal profiler who uses Tarot cards to solve crimes. That was a wonderful opportunity to play with cards in a story.

Ok, now in Embers, the male protagonist is Drake Ferrer. I really felt he was such an interesting character with a rich history. How did he come to be, and is he based on anyone in particular?

He's not based on a real person, but he represents disillusionment. He embodies a desire to burn out the old and build something new. In that respect, he's quite ruthless.

I also wanted him to have a tie to Anya. He's the only other person Anya's met who can devour ghosts like she can. And he understands the dark side of that power. Anya is forever having to hide her destructive instincts from the rest of her ghost-hunting allies. I wanted her to meet someone who understood her fully.

Ok Laura, time for some easier questions! Your main character Anya lives in Hamtramck, which is known to be like a little Poland in Michigan… do you like pierogis, and what’s your favorite flavor?

Oh, NOM. I've never had a bad pierogi, but my favorites are cheese and potato. I once had one with cheese AND bacon that made me swoon.

And since I must obviously be hungry, whats your go-to dessert if calories are only a figment of our imagination?

Anything chocolate. And I deliberately choose to ignore calorie counts for chocolate.

Do you have a favorite movie?

I really loved CONSTANTINE. I thought it was a great story, one I remember from back in the days when I collected comic books.

And are you a winter or summer lady?

Summer! I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I set up an inflatable kiddie pool in the backyard to splash around in during the summer. It's the Budget Jacuzzi. It actually attracted a pair of mallards last summer. I went outside with my towel and flip flops, and there were two ducks paddling on the surface of the water, looking at me with an expression of: "Yeah, so?"

The story opens with a quick prologue where we see Jerrod riding in a carriage…in 1821.  Yep, 1821.  He’s in the carriage with a couple other people, and it’s a bumpy ride in a storm.  The carriage is all over the place, and then….. heck no, I’m not telling you!

Jump to present day.  Sandra is riding along a country road when she spies a carriage tipped off the road.  Being the good Samaritan that she is, she stops to see if anyone needs help and happens upon Jerrod Ross, practically passed out cold.  She has an instant attraction.  And for some reason even she can not fathom, rather than call an ambulance or the police, she rouses him, gets him to her truck and back home to her place.

This story takes place over a pretty short period of time…. Well almost 200 years, and a couple weeks.  Sandra is an obviously hurt woman.  She is a burnt out school teacher taking a year off after tragedy struck right in front of her.  She just wants to get her head back together.  She is a very likable character, and you can see her heart from a mile away.

Jerrod is an…ahem, strapping young man.  In his time he is wealthy and prosperous.  Then suddenly he is in our time, and in the care of Sandra.  The chemistry is definitely reciprocated, although he has what is certainly understandable conflicts about what has happened.  He's in a new time and place, leaving absolutely everything he knows behind him in that carriage ride.

“Yes, Jerrod Ross, Historical Romance Hunk, was certainly

letting her forget her wretched memories and dark thoughts and, for

that alone, she was grateful.”

Do you believe that love, or the hope of love, can transcend time and space to bring two people together?  The bond these two people shared was tangible.  They quickly came to rely on each other.  I didn’t want him to go home, I wanted him to stay in our time.  It was driving me crazy thinking he was going to have to go back to his time!

Also there were some humorous parts to this story.  I find it quite funny to see such a “large and in charge” type of man become bewildered by and frightened of today's modern amenities and conveniences.  Ms. Gerrard definitely brought out the giggles in me a few times watching Jerrod trying to acclimate himself to our time in history. 

There are a few very steamy scenes also, that will make your toes curl and read a bit quicker, to find out what happens next.  The author definitely has no issue describing in beautiful vividness the seduction between a man and a woman. 

Now, of course I can’t tell you how it ends.  But it will definitely have you on the edge of your seat!  You’ll have to purchase your own copy of Timeless Heart for that – or win one here right after this review!  But if you like historical romances, this will appeal to you.  If you like modern romances, this will appeal to you.  If you like erotic romance, this will appeal to you.  And this may even appeal to you if you like a bit a sci-fi thrown in for good measure.  I really liked reading this book, and I am excited to say that Timeless Love, the sequel to Timeless Heart will be out at the end of March, early April.  So you may want to go sign up for Karyn Gerrard’s newsletter to stay informed of that!

This book was introduced to me as X-Men meets Dollhouse.  Those are two of my favorites, so my answer was a definite “yes!”.

And it is true, there are X-Men-ish and Dollhouse-ish elements to Forbidden Mind.  But I think that is selling it short.  There is a giant personal element here that I don’t think either of those other stories captured.

Sam is the female protagonist.  She goes to private school and works for the school in an operative type status.  The students have dubbed the school as “Rent-A-Kid”.  Their services are sought out for different reasons, depending on the kid hired.  The element that makes “Rent-A-Kid” special is that all of its employees slash students have special powers.  Sam can read minds.  Her friend, Lucy, is basically a human lie detector.  Lucy’s brother, Luke, can walk through walls!

“Help Me.  They took me.  Help me, please.”

His name is Drake Davis, and he is a mystery.  And he needs help.   Sam hears this one day in her thoughts when she comes back from a job.  And it begins a series of questions and secrets revealed that will dramatically change her life forever.   

This story, while short, had a ton of intriguing factors to it.  First, there are the super powers each person has.  Of course that is awesome.   Then there is the whole deal of the kids being basically farmed out for their special powers to be used on assignment, which is usually some type of corporate espionage type deal.

The characters are well written, and develop well within the story.  It is a fast paced story, for sure, and full of action.  This is something I was very impressed with since the main character is telepathic, and a good portion of the story actually takes place within her mind. 

The supporting characters are wonderful and varied, and I really hope we get to know them more in the future.  If you are into private school type stories, or super power stories, then you will like this one.  I very much encourage you to read this because there are some definite twists and turns that you do NOT see coming at all – and it is very refreshing and made for a really terrific read.

Tess can see ghosts and she can help them with their unfinished business so they can cross over and move on.  Suddenly a hot guy is following her, whispering naughty things about what he would do.  She is trying to ignore him and have a life, but really, it's impossible!  The guy has got it going on, and his name is Kipp.  Kipp was a cop and his partner, Zach, needs the info Kipp knows to solve the cold case of missing girl, Hanna Reid.

First of all, Stacey Kennedy really knows how to pack a punch into her books.  I’ve read a couple now, and I’ve never been disappointed.  Supernaturally Kissed can definitely be added to that list.  Tess and Kipp have some great electrifying chemistry.  She can try to ignore him, she can try to deny her feelings.  But that can’t last for long when you have someone who is so obviously the perfect match for you right there.  The only question, is how long will it last – how long can it last? 

I found myself not wanting this story to end.  Tess has a bit of a snarky attitude, something I just love in my female lead characters.  And Kipp, well, Kipp has that wonderful alpha male mentality that just speaks volumes to me.  I love Kipp!  So a dash of humor, a few wonderfully steamy scenes, a bit of intrigue and drama, and you’ve got one heck of a story ahead of you.

There’s so much I want to talk with all of you about this story, but there is really only so much I can say without giving it away!  Seriously!  You will enjoy this story.  Tess has an awesome friend, Caley, who is just as protective and funny and wild as you could hope for in a supporting character.  I’m really hoping she will get her own book in the future.  On Kipp’s side you get to meet his partner, errr, ex-partner, Zach, who just makes me think of Shemar Moore as far as personality and all around wonderfulness along with some coworkers from the precinct.

This book really offers you a lot.  It’s hot and romantic, but there is a really good mystery involved too regarding the cold case of Hannah Reid.  Ms. Kennedy did a great job of weaving the two sides of this book together.  And best of all, this is the first book in the Frostbite series, so definitely be ready for more!
