Review of Lucifer's Daughter by Eve Langlais

Format: Ebook provided by author for review

Being Lucifer’s daughter can be hell.

Hi, I’m Muriel, the only white sheep in a sea of black ones, and a virgin to boot. I am determined to wait for love, but my dad, more commonly known as Lucifer, just wants me to stop being an embarrassment. I’m hoping the hunk that I met in my bar will turn out to be the one–just looking at him makes my insides melt like marshmallows over the coals of hell, but trusting is hard when it seems everyone I get close to ends up trying to kill me.

Not only am I dealing with an extreme case of lust, there’s a new threat in hell, one my dad says to ignore. Something easier said than done since it seems everywhere I turn demons are trying to kill me. But I’m okay with that, because one thing I’ve learned being a princess of hell is that sometimes I have to grab a demon by the horns and slap it around a bit.

A rebellion in hell, demon assassins and scorching kisses, could my life get any more interesting?

“… Couldn’t you at least sin a little? You’re supposed to be a princess of Hell.”

And with that we meet Lucifer.  Satan.  The One and Only.  The Big Bad.  And let me tell you, he is awesome.  And in this story Satan is a dad.  And he is funny and snarky and quick-witted, just like his daughter, Muriel.  Sure, he’s still got a job to do running Hell and all, but he also has a 23 year old daughter to look after, and she is a hand full!

Meet Muriel. She still holds her V-card, but she owns a bar.  She wants to make it on her own, and she wants to make it with a man (but don’t tell her dad, he’d be elated!)  Ok, so those are two different versions of “make it” but who is counting? So when Mr. Gorgeous and Full of Hotness himself walks into her bar, she’s left breathing a little heavy.

Let’s meet Auric. Everything about him is best left for you to find out.  But I will tell you he is hot, scarred, and he makes me wish I was Satan’s daughter too.

I loved this story!  It had everything that I look for.  Funny and smart woman?  Check.  Super-freakin-hot man? Check.  Danger and intrigue? Check.  Impossible situations, secrets and intense heat? Check check check! In a great style I have quickly come to associate with all things Eve Langlais, Lucifer’s Daughter knocks this one right out of the park.  And Muriel has a rocking fashion sense on top of it all.  Demons, hellhounds, succubi, shifters, angels, and more.

I found Auric to be a formidable match for Muriel.  I love him.  From his very beginning gruffness, to an unusual display of love set to music (ahem, which was all too perfect after Googling to get the scoop for myself), to his alpha personality and bottomless love for Muriel.  And he has a scar.  Scars are definitely sexy, maybe even more so than tattoos! Auric doesn’t show all of his cards at once, he slowly lets out his wonderfulness.  And I’m hooked.  I want to read a hundred books all set around this green eyed, raven haired beauty of a man.

Muriel is perfectly written.  She is a tough girl, and she is smart.  She wants to be independent, but she is still her father’s daughter.  She has weapons and power, and great style.  Her family (which is sizable) loves her.  She lit up the pages with her wit and attitude.  Her past has secrets that I can’t wait to get the answers to – like who is her mother??

I loved this book that I went right to Amazon and purchased the next in the series, Snowballs in Hell.  So stay close for a review of that in the upcoming weeks, and also the Freakn’ Shifters series which I have coming up too!

Ok, one more quote from Lucifer’s Daughter:

“You’re making me look like a bad parent.  My minions in Hell are laughing at me.  There have even been rumors I’m no longer fir to be the Father Of All Sin, since I can’t even control my own daughter.”

Love it!

Follow Eve

Next in series: Snowballs in Hell. I'm not giving you the synopsis to avoid spoilers, but I thought I'd share the glorious cover! :)

An Interview/Giveaway with Wenona Hulsey, author of Blood Awakening

Nicole, a small town Alabama girl, and her best friend Kat take a weekend trip to Panama City, Florida. Kat looking to have a good time and Nicole hoping to escape the pain of losing her mother for a little while. Little did Nicole know, the escape would awaken a ancient power that is hidden in her blood. A power that evil wants for its own and will do whatever it takes to have it.

This short story is a look into best friends', Nicole and Kat, life before a centuries old grudge and Nicole's emerging powers rips them apart. A power that Nicole wants no part of as it brings her to her knees and forces her to walk away from her small town life and everyone she loves.

Hi Wenona! Thank you so much for talking to me today, and for doing this feature post with me!
Thank you for letting me join you Liz.  I love doing guest posts.  It makes me feel a bit like I'm taking over the world one blog at a time, Bhahahahaaa.  Whoops, my evil laugh gives me away some times lol.
Haha, that's quite alright, I understand!  I've even had my own evil laugh from time to time ;)

You are the author of the Blood Burden series, can you tell the readers a little bit about this series?
Sure!  Nicole has a secret that even she doesn't know about.  It is brought to the surface in one form in the novelette Blood Awakening.  Then the suspenseful, paranormal ride really starts to speed up in the novel Burden of Blood where Nicole is a police officer in a small Alabama town.  She uses her power to catch criminals but that's just the tip of the iceberg.  Her power transforms when her life is on the line and accidently draws ancient eyes on her in the process.  Not to give too much away but you will find lots of action, some steamy romance, and twist that will leave you wondering what will happen next as this modern day series plays out.
It sounds great!

And what comes next in Blood of Fire?
Blood of Fire continues exactly where Burden of Blood left off.  There's a war brewing, a love she leaves behind and new alliances that have dark intentions of their own.  It will be the hardest trials of Nicole's life.  Giving her the chance to run from the burden of her power or step up and be the leader she needs to be.

Blood of Fire will be out this summer…That is if I can stay off Facebook and Twitter lol.
LOL There are about a million things I could do if I'd stay off Facebook!

Did you always know that you wanted to be an author?
From about the age of 15 I knew I wanted to write.  I've always been an avid reader and admired the craft of writing but I didn't get brave enough or feel confident enough in my ability to create a world until almost a year ago.  Maybe I felt I had enough life experience under my belt or, more likely, I reached an age where I'm not afraid to fall on my face.  After all, you only live once.

When you sit down to write, do you have a soundtrack that you listen to, to help set the mood?  And if yes, of course, what is it?
I have TONS of soundtracks lol.  I could fill a page with music because for each mood I'm writing I have songs I like to listen to.  Everything from Adele for the dramatic love moments to Nine Inch Nails for the fight scenes are in my mix.  My latest thing that I've REALLY enjoyed is using Spotify on Facebook.  I have a fight scene soundtrack going and it's open for my fans to add their favorite kick a$$ music to my playlist.  My readers are the greatest source for inspirational music!  If you're interested in adding to my list Liz, here's the link  http://open.spotify.com/user/wenonahulsey/playlist/3xN2LaPFoL4ye4y6qsGzwP

Wenona, do you have a favorite author that you read?
I read so many genres it's hard to pick a favorite.  I love discovering reads from indies like Liz Schultes, Olivia Harden and Lola James but I also like some big time authors like Stephen King, Charline Harris and Suzan Collins.  I'm very diverse in my reading.

If you had to choose actors to play your main character Nicole, who do you think it would be?
Hummm, this is a hard one for me because I honestly don't watch a lot of television.  I'm thinking that maybe Emily Blunt would work well if she could grasp the southern accent.  Her facial features are remarkably close to Nicole's.  Oh, it would be so exciting to see the Blood Burden series on the big screen!!
Very pretty, great choice!

And what would you say is your favorite part of being an author?
Getting to create my own worlds and invite others inside when I'm done.  I love when readers tell me that they wished Nicole was real because it was like losing a best friend when the last page was read.  Comments like that make an author very happy.

Ok, here are the easy questions…
Favorite dessert or treat?
Anything with caramel! YUMMY.
Favorite season?
Summer! Give me flip-flops and sunshine every day.

Favorite movie?
Alice in Wonderland (the newest rendition of it.)

Favorite beverage?
Sweet Tea
Yummy!

Oh, one last thing!  How can we find you online if we want to follow you?
You can find me lots of place!  I could have written a library full of novels by now if you add in all my chatter on line lol. Here's the list:

Wenona Hulsey

Thanks for joining me today, Wenona!  It’s been a lot of fun getting to know you, and I look forward to your next release, Blood of Fire!

Bewitching Blog Tours, Guest Post/Giveaway - Ada Adams author of Revamped

Wow, I have a really terrific guest post from a fabulous author!  Please welcome Ada Adams as she shares how ReVamped went from tv script to novel.  Plus there is a giveaway at the end to win a Kindle copy of ReVamped!

A simple mission turned deadly.
Nineteen-year-old vampire Dawn has led a sheltered life within the confines of her father’s presidential headquarters. Upon being sent on a mission to revamp four goofy misfits into guardians of a peaceful little town of Angel Creek, Dawn believes that all her dreams have finally come true. What starts off as a simple task, turns into something unexpected, changing Dawn’s life forever and leading the action-loving, thrill-seeking vampire teen on a path of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When a human girl is kidnapped by a group of rogue vamps, Dawn discovers that there is more going on in Angel Creek than meets the eye. And it all connects to Ethan, the cute newcomer who seems too perfect to be true, Sebastian, the mysterious vampire with a turbulent past, and even Dawn herself. Dawn must not only succeed in revamping the troubled recruits, but must also prevent the vampire race from being overtaken by a malevolent villain who has a strange and obsessive fascination with her. As threat escalates, romance blooms, and ghosts from her past begin to surface, Dawn is sure of only one thing: her life will never be the same.

Character (Re)Development – From a Script to a Novel

ReVamped was originally created as a TV pilot script for an action/adventure comedy show about a group of misfit vampires and the girl responsible for revamping them into protectors of a small town. One interesting thing that I encountered while transforming the script into a novel was the fact that my characters had to be almost completely redeveloped. I found this to be especially true for the main character of Dawn (who actually used to be named Gabrielle).

Dawn, uhh, I mean Gabrielle from the script was a lot different the Dawn you meet in the novel. While both girls were extremely strong physically, Gabrielle had a much tougher personality. And, unlike nineteen-year-old Dawn (who was born in 1996), Gabrielle was a two-hundred-year-old vampire. She was one no-nonsense, smart, strong, sarcastic vampire chick!

However, once I began turning the script into the novel, I found that her sarcasm didn’t translate well on the page. In fact, she was often coming off as a little mean. In a show script, you can write a sarcastic line, and as long as the actor delivers it properly, it can come off as very funny and incredibly charming. However, if the actor happens to take it into too much of a sarcastic extreme, then you get an unlikable character. I’m sure we’ve all seen our fair share of such characters in film and TV. When writing a novel, writers don’t have the luxury of relying on talented actors to make the words jump off the page. Still, we have to ensure that the character will come off the way he/she is supposed to, or else, the reader will interpret them as unlikable individuals.

While writing the novel, I found myself having to tone down Dawn’s sarcasm, and having to amp up her humanity and vulnerability. As a result, I chiseled away some of Gabrielle’s perfections and got a very “human” vampire character (who is still able to kick a lot of butt, of course)! Dawn is also very shy and somewhat inept when it comes to guys—a trait that was definitely not part of the script.

When I read through the script (now that I have spent a lot more time with the novel), I see Gabrielle as someone that Dawn could have easily become—an older version of what Dawn could have been if she hadn’t met the misfits, Sebastian, and Ethan. However, now that she is on a journey with them, I definitely think that Dawn’s life and personality development will take a much different turn.

I thought that I would share a scene from ReVamped’s script and compare it to a similar scene in the novel. By the way, Alexander is Sebastian—another name, history, and personality change that I’m so very happy I made! Alexander actually had a very good reason for hating the president (which didn’t make it into Sebastian’s story, but it did have something special to do with Gabrielle). Burk’s Falls is Angel Creek.

When performing the scene from the script, the actors can, of course, easily ignite the tension, attraction, and the sparks between the characters. However, if you read the dialogue on the script, the passion between the two is almost non-existent. Personally, I think that the novel scene is much, much better. What do you think? :)

REVAMPED SCRIPT

EXT. BURK’S FALLS CITY LIMITS – DAY

CUT TO:
GABRIELLE crosses into the town and passes by the “Burk’s Falls” sign. She is holding a large leather binder in her hand. She pauses and opens to the first page.

CUT TO:
A PHOTO of ALEXANDER, 21 (rugged, unsmiling).
GABRIELLE
Alexander Johnson. Turned in 1845 at age 21. Son of wealthy British shipbuilders who disowned him upon his transformation.

CUT TO:
EXT. SMALL DRIVEWAY OF A DILAPIDATED HOUSE - DAY
Alexander working on his car in front of his house. His back is turned to Gabrielle. Gabrielle walks towards him, still reading the file.
GABRIELLE
Brooding, mysterious, strong, but self-deprecating. Ugh. Who wrote this crap?

Gabrielle stops in front of the car.

GABRIELLE (CONT.)
Alexander Johnson?

Alexander pauses, turning around to look at Gabrielle. When he sees her, he drops his tools, startled. He quickly recovers, stands up and wipes off his hands.
ALEXANDER
(clearing his throat)
Depends. Who wants to know?
GABRIELLE
My name is Gabrielle. I’m here on behalf of the President. You’ve been summoned as a protector of Burk’s Falls. I assume you know what that entails.

Alexander looks intently at Gabrielle, then recovers once again and scoffs loudly.
ALEXANDER
What happened to the High School Musical gang? They were doing quite a number on the town from what I’ve heard.

GABRIELLE
They're no longer with us. They served their century. The job is your responsibility now.

ALEXANDER
(firmly)
No.
GABRIELLE
(incredulous)
What do you mean, “no”?
ALEXANDER
(smirks)
No. Nope. Nah. I don’t think so. Not interested.
Is that clear enough for you?

GABRIELLE
Whether or not you’re interested is beside the point. This is your duty!
ALEXANDER
Yeeeah, no. I don’t know if your President told you, but I don’t really embrace this whole “vampire fad”. I’m not interested in anything related to vampires, being a vampire, or serving the vampire government.

GABRIELLE
What about your obligation to protect humans?

ALEXANDER
I’m not interested in humans either – not even the sniveling, vulnerable ones so many vampire idiots fall for. You could say I’m only interested in myself. So if you wouldn’t mind leaving, I’d love to get back to work.

Gabrielle rushes to stand in front of Alexander. They look at each other for a moment.

GABRIELLE
(firmly)
You can’t do that.

Alexander suddenly becomes very agitated. He presses his face into Gabrielle’s.

ALEXANDER
Listen. For the past century I’ve been doing exactly what I want, when I want. I don’t owe anything to anyone - human or vampire - especially not your president. Now leave me alone before I make you leave!

GABRIELLE
(unfaltering)
You know that you can be prosecuted for disobeying the orders. Every one of us must serve for at least a century.

ALEXANDER
(stony-eyed)
Then it’s a good thing that I’m not one of you!

He storms off into his house.

REVAMPED BOOK

I ordered Seth to wait in the car, and slowly made my way up the dirt path in the direction of what I had hoped was Sebastian’s residence. The longer I walked, the darker and more daunting the clouds above me became. Finally, with a booming crash of thunder, the sky tore open, releasing a fresh downpour of cool rain. This time, it was faster and heavier, pummeling against Hannah’s note and drenching her small, neat writing.
I considered turning back and meeting with Sebastian another time, but my curiosity got the best of me. I examined Hannah’s note, squinting to make out some of the smudged words.
Sebastian York is a twenty-one year-old Scorpio. He has gorgeous light gray eyes, the color of sparkling glaciers. His midnight-black hair is slightly curly, and just long enough to make you daydream about running your fingers through his locks. He’s super tall and really, really hot. Just try to peel your eyes away from all those lean muscles! Yum! He’s brooding, mysterious, strong, and self-deprecating (or at least, he seems like the type)—the perfect vampire!
I had to stop myself from reading the rest. Hannah’s report on Sebastian was a little over-the-top for my taste. Not to mention, much too unbelievable. I scrunched up the soaked paper and tucked it into the pocket of my jeans. I smiled to myself, thinking that the bubbly redhead had a promising career ahead of her as a writer of cheesy romance novels.
The hike through the forest led to a secluded clearing. The trees parted, revealing a striking building, more akin to a grand mansion, than a house in the woods. While made in the same style as the buildings in town, the three-story structure had a stately, regal air about it. Clad in white stone with Grecian temple-inspired columns towering across its entire façade, it very much resembled the majestic inn on the grounds of the Angel Creek Park.
The driveway finally came to an end, and I found myself next to a luxury antique car. Its cherry-red hood was propped wide open, and it took a moment before I noticed that there was a figure tinkering with the machinery underneath. He wore a pair of loose, black pants; the muscles on his bare back flexed as he strained to tighten something with a metal wrench.
Hannah’s words flashed through my mind as I stood frozen in place, observing Sebastian’s profile. My gaze traveled along his tall, lean frame, my pulse quickening in response to the wet raindrops sliding down his chiseled arms. Flustered, I quickly raised my eyes up to his face, gliding over his sharp angular jaw and high cheekbones, and finding a resting place atop his glistening, dark locks. Embarrassed by my unexpected attraction to the vampire in front of me, I sharply looked away, thankful for the cooling sensation of the wet raindrops against my skin.
Suddenly, Sebastian sensed my presence. His entire body tensed as he spun around; the wrench firmly grasped in his hand, ready and poised for an attack. The moment his eyes fixed on me, he froze, a look of sheer terror seizing his face. The metal tool fell out of his hand, hitting the cobblestone with a loud clank. The noise seemed to break the spell he was under. As his gaze connected with mine, the look of horror that came over him just moments before immediately vanished.
“Sebastian?” I asked breathlessly, unnerved by his startling reaction.
He didn’t reply. Instead, he continued to examine every inch of me with his cool, gray eyes. My entire body blazed under his scrutinizing stare, but despite my uneasiness, I couldn’t bring myself to look away from him. His gaze was both terrifying and thrilling, all at once.
The strong wind frantically tugged at my hair, as if trying to snap me out of my trance. In spite of nature’s best efforts, I simply stood there, locked in an unnerving staring contest with the mysterious vampire. A deafening clap of thunder shook the earth, causing me to jump, and startling Sebastian back to his senses.
“Who wants to know?” he finally responded. There was a sharp edge to his smooth, velvety voice.
“My name is Dawn,” I said, attempting a smile. “I’m here on an assignment from the Vampire President to train the new guardians of Angel Creek. Since you’re one of the five vampire residents, I thought you’d want to know about the mission and take part—” I paused abruptly, distracted by the angry scowl forming across his face.
Another earsplitting roar of thunder sounded before he spoke. “Not interested,” he said curtly, his eyes still intent on me. He was boldly exploring my face, his gaze slowly traveling down my body.
“Dawn, did you say?” he asked curiously, his voice a little less brisk.
I nodded, crossing my arms in a self-conscious effort to shield myself from his gaze. “So can we count you in?” I asked hopefully.
“No.”
“What do you mean no?” I sputtered in disbelief. I was quickly becoming annoyed with the shirtless, ill-mannered vampire.
“No. Nope. Not interested. Is that clear enough for you?”
“Really?”
“Yes, really—no.” He turned away, waving his hand in my direction, as if to let me know I was dismissed.
“Why?” I asked, stretching out to grab his arm. Thankfully, he had moved just before I could reach him, as mid-grab, I realized that touching Sebastian was a bold move I had not fully thought out.
He turned around to face me, the heated look in his eyes causing me to take a slight step back.
“I don’t really embrace this whole vampire fad. I’m not interested in anything related to vampires, being a vampire or serving the Vampire President. Got it?”
“What about your obligation to protect humans?” I questioned.
“I’m not interested in humans either, not even the sad, vulnerable ones so many vampire idiots fall for. You could say, I’m only interested in myself.” He smirked, his tone once again reaching sub-zero temperatures. “So, if you wouldn’t mind leaving, I’d love to get back to work.”
“But, but…you can’t do that. When I tell the President that you’re here, he’ll order you to join the group.” I was grasping at straws.
All of a sudden, Sebastian charged toward me, thrusting his face directly into mine. He was so close our noses almost touched. I raised my eyes to meet his, the raindrops from his wet locks dripping onto my forehead. I fought the temptation to blink, as droplets of water slid down my eyelashes. I was not about to show him any weakness.
“For the past century I’ve been doing exactly what I want, when I want. I don’t owe anything to any human or vampire—especially not the President. Now, please leave, before I make you leave!” he said through clenched teeth.
“Fine!” I yelled, pressing my fists tightly against my legs in an effort to prevent myself from striking him. “But, just so you know, you’re a really sucky vampire.” I mentally kicked myself for the lame retort. At the same time, I also chastised myself for having wanted this aggravating snob to join the group in the first place.
“Please don’t come around here anymore.” With those final words, Sebastian stormed off into the house, slamming the heavy door behind him.
I was left alone on the wet driveway, feeling confused and angry, but also somewhat excited by our meeting.

Review of Spirits Rising - Krista D Ball

Format: Ebook provided by author for review

Rachel Mills has one wish in life: for the spirit world to shut up and leave her alone. She thought her move to a remote fishing village in Northern Newfoundland would help.

Population: Twenty. What could go wrong?

Instead of peace, however, she relocates to a land of superstitution, the air alive with the presence of others.

When a local teenager accidentally summons the spirits of the area, including those from a thousand-year-old Viking settlement, all supernatural breaks loose. As the spirits stalk her and each other, Rachel finds herself in over her head. With the help of Mrs. Saunders, her 93-year-old neighbour, Rachel has to put aside her own prejudices long enough to send the spirits back to rest, or risk being caught in the midst of a spirit war.

Rachel has just come back from a Mexican vacation to her home in Newfoundland.  She’s beginning to think that this isn’t the place for her, after falling for a man already in another relationship.  That’s not to mention that she is seemingly hated by her neighbors.  If you found religious tracts on your door on a near daily basis telling you that you were going to Hell, you’d think you were unwanted too.  She also serves as a designated driver for local teens, much to their parents dismay since they believe she is giving the children opportunity to drink.

So when Rachel gets a call from Manny, she is ready to help him.  She goes to his house thinking perhaps he had been drinking.  Even worse, his dad is the pastor at the local church and clearly doesn’t like Rachel. But Manny (and everyone else in town) knows Rachel is special, she can sense spirits around her.

When she gets to his house she finds mayhem.  Mayhem in the form of Viking spirits come to life in flesh and blood…destructive flesh and blood. And since she is sensitive to the paranormal, it is up to her to fix the situation.

This book had a lot of action and a bit of history.  I found it a lot of fun to read.  The characters were vivid and interesting to learn about.  The plot was great.  The action was exciting.  The only downside is that there are definitely some unanswered questions to issues brought up in the story.  Hopefully those will be addressed further in the series, as this is #1 in the Spirit Caller series.  I also think that maybe some sort of prequel would be awesome, because as far as Rachel’s romantic story, it kind of feels like we are entering right in the middle of something that could be very interesting.

All in all, I’d definitely recommend this book.  It dealt with the paranormal in a way that we don’t see too often, Vikings and aboriginal Newfies.  I’ve never been to Newfoundland, but the descriptions of the area were so vivid, I felt like I was already there.

Masquerading Hearts, Victoria Blisse - A review

Format: Ebook received for review

Laura craves revenge. After Jacks betrayal with a bitchy blonde she can think of nothing but avenging her broken heart. In the drive for closure she moves from one night stand to one night stand fueling the pain not quelling it as her conflicting emotions for Jack still run riot within her. Relucantly attending a party she finds herself seduced by a sexy stranger but as they move to the bedroom, Jack enters... Will a foursome bring the closure she needs? Is Jack the only one who can fix the heart he broke? or is this all just another act in this erotic masquerade?

“All that matters is revenge: Revenge on Jack.”

Jack and Laura were a couple, presumably in love.  Everything was going along perfect.  Then Jack lied, he said he loved her but then he cheated on her.  Laura has a broken heart and tries to heal with revenge sex – with anyone she can find.

The beginning of this story slips from reality to Laura’s memory, but does so in a way that isn’t jarring.  She battles with this meaningless sex before her, enraged by the love of her life lost.  His betrayal is consuming her.  Love lost is not love forgotten, and even after a man cheats on you and breaks your heart, there is still room for more pain.

She trolls places where she thinks he will be.  One night she finds him.  She can feel his eyes on her as she grinds and dances with two young men.  He tries to hurt her back, dancing with some faceless tramp.  That night ends in less than stellar fashion and Laura is home alone.  But soon her friend convinces her to go out, move on.  And she does.

I enjoyed this story, it took me on a trip that I didn’t expect.  The characters were interesting, although you don’t get to know the rest of them as well as Laura.  Laura is a woman in pain, and anyone who has had a heart broken this way will surely identify with her.

This story does shift into a foursome, so for some (foursome for some haha) people that might be a bit too much.  But it is not the focus of this story, its just one event in the rise and fall of their relationship.  All in all this was a hot read, and interesting beyond the sex.  I definitely recommend this and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future!

EXCERPT

As he spoke he leaned back into the couch and peered up at her through half-closed eyes. She turned away from his gaze and quickly opened the bottles and poured bubbling liquid into both glasses.

“Here you go,” she said with a smile and handed him the drink. She sat on the edge of the sofa beside him but as far away as was polite. She put the glass to her lips and sipped the sharp cold liquid, feeling the bubbles bursting in her mouth.

She felt his eyes on her and gulped more liquid, then opened her eyes wide as it flooded her throat. Her eyes burned and she struggled to swallow but it was no use. Before she could cover her mouth she coughed violently, spraying her lap and the coffee table with soda.

Summer clapped her hands over her mouth, but too late. The damage was already done. Her eyes grew huge with distress and she looked across at Lance, hot with embarrassment.

“Are you alright?” He’d quickly rested his glass on the table and was leaning towards her, a large white handkerchief in his hand. She took it gratefully, still coughing. Then the spasms gradually subsided and she was able to look at him again. Her eyes were brimming with tears.

“Are you crying?” He looked incredulous, almost out of his depth, as he raised his hand and wiped away a tear with his thumb.

Summer dabbed at her eyes, sniffed, then looked up at him again, her lips curling into a grin. “Of course not, silly. I’m not crying. It’s the coughing that made my eyes fill up with tears.” Somehow, seeing him look so nonplussed had made her more at ease with him.

“Silly, huh?” He smiled back at her. “You’re the one who gulped down a carbonated drink too fast and ended up losing the whole lot all over yourself. So, who’s silly?”

While he was speaking Lance had rested his arm at the back of the couch right behind her head and had begun to gently stroke her nape with his thumb. Summer swallowed hard but couldn’t get the lump out of her throat.

“I guess…I am,” she said, her voice breathless.

“Yes,” he whispered as he leaned forward to press his warm lips against the side of her neck, “you are.”

Summer’s breath came in shallow gasps as she sat still, not feeling she could move even if she wanted to. She was like a bird frozen in the mesmerizing stare of a snake, knowing it was about to be eaten alive but not able to make a move to save its own life.

She moaned and closed her eyes as his lips stroked the sensitive skin then moved to the base of her throat where he licked softly and gently. She didn’t realize that she was still clutching the handkerchief tightly in her hand until she felt his strong fingers pry hers open to pull it away so that he could seduce her palm with his thumb.

“Relax, baby.” He moved his lips up her neck and to her ear. “You’re so tense. Just relax.”

As he spoke he pushed her back gently into the plush pillows and began to nibble her ear lobe. He gave a lick just behind her ear and shock waves ran down her spine.

“Oh, God,” she breathed, “what are you doing to me?”

“What someone should have done to you a long time ago, Summer Jones,” he whispered. “Teach you what it means to be a woman.”
