Ember by Rachel Van Dyken (Review)

Title: Ember
Series: Eagle Elite #5
Author: Rachel Van Dyken
Released: February 19, 2015
Pages: 341 per Goodreads
Format: Amazon Lend

I am a Killer. A Rapist. A Monster.
I know only pain and survival.
That is until the Cappo's sister walked into my life.
And changed everything.

She's a light who makes my darkness darker, her smile makes my heart turn to ice, and I can't escape the fear her seductive looks instill--knowing it's only a matter of time before I fail--again, and take her for myself.
This is the story of my redemption.
But it's not pretty...I died, and now I'm alive, but not living, breathing but not surviving. I am Phoenix De Lange, son to a murdered mob boss, estranged brother, horrible friend, monster in the making, newest leader to one of the most powerful families in the Cosa Nostra.
And I will have my vengeance.
Or die trying.
I am Phoenix De Lange.
Death is all I know.
Until she offers me a piece of life--I can't resist taking.

Loved it!!  Ok - I have a confession... this is all the way to book five and I JUST realized Eagle Elite is a college and not a highschool!  *Headdesk*  WTH was I thinking??  Now it all just makes so much more sense.  Seriously, I don't know why I was so dense and I missed that.  But now - Phoenix, the black sheep, he gets his book.  I was so excited to read this.  I just love this series so much!

I have to be honest - I wasn't sure I was going to like Phoenix's book.  I mean, throughout the series he is repeatedly painted as the bad guy.  Yes, there are moments he's not.  But overall, I just picture him so.... so not what I want to read about.  Well, hello change of mind!!  Phoenix was amazing.  Bee (short for Bianka) was amazing.  Together they were amazing!

Bee and Phoenix have this odd relationship.  He's pretty much her bodyguard because she is Tex's sister.  With Tex being the head honcho, there's a list a mile long of people who would use her to get to him.  She trusts Phoenix and she is comfortable with him, so there ya have it.  Trouble is, he's not so comfortable with her.  He's done some very bad things, and because of them he's pretty much sworn off women.

Big ol' dreamy sighs here.  Phoenix put up a good fight, but he never had a chance against Bee.  I love Phoenix now, and I adore Bee beyond words.  Both are kind of broken, and they fix each other in the most beautiful of ways.  They just seem to know what the other needs, they are so in tune with each other. Rachel Van Dyken has once again created another edition in this series that had me swooning all over the place.  She definitely keeps up the chemistry and the action, and the mafia-type secrets are awesome and really keep me guessing.  Plus she keeps the old characters around and they are active.  Her world-building for this series is freaking awesome.

But next is Sergio's book.  And seriously - after everything we are learning about him, I am really not sure she can change my mind.  I'll have to let you know soon!! Elude comes out July 9, but you can pre-order right now for 99 cents - and trust me - that's cheap for this series!  So get it while you can!

And I just realized I never left a review for book 4 (Tex's book) but trust me - it was SO Freaking Good!!  Definitely a 5 star read!!

Rachel Van Dyken is the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today Bestselling author of regency and contemporary romances.

When she's not writing you can find her drinking coffee at Starbucks and plotting her next book while watching The Bachelor.

She keeps her home in Idaho with her Husband and their snoring Boxer, Sir Winston Churchill. She loves to hear from readers!
