Tammy is convinced men are all scum, even gorgeous ones like Reid Carver. She knows he’s hiding something. Something big. She just never expected a real freaking bear hid underneath all those muscles. But when the truth comes out and he tries to scare her off with a roar, she shows him not just bears have bite.
I have a confession: I've been terribly bored with shifter romance... heck, paranormal romance in general. I've been staying as far away as I can. But then Eve Langlais came along with this romance about Kodiak bears, and I couldn't help myself. I HAD to say yes. See, Eve has this wondrous ability to make me love a book, no matter the genre. So shifter or not, I was in. And I was completely enthralled and entertained!
The basics of this book are pretty easy. We have Reid, who runs a trucking company in Alaska. Lately he has had an issue with trucks disappearing, including their drivers and their cargo. It's not only hurting his business, it's hurting the small town that depends on the deliveries. But big ol Reid is also a shifter, of the Kodiak bear variety. Rawwwwrrrr. Bears are absolutely one of my favorite shifters, and I love Eve Langlais' bears beyond measure. Reid fits the bill, he is big and gruff, and he is also Alpha of his mixed clan.
"Reid, hiding something? Nope. He's exactly what he appears to be. A big ol' bear with a loud roar and I'm-the-alpha attitude."
But he can't control everything, and here comes Tammy, the insurance investigator. She's fresh off of a bad breakup with a cheating douchebag, and getting away to Alaska doesn't sound half bad. Weird things begin to happen to her right from the minute she gets there, but there is always someone handy with an excuse. I can't tell you how much that gave me the giggles!! Watching everyone trying to protect the shifter secret, and watching Tammy just shift uncomfortably as she knew they were feeding her lines of b.s. It was really a terrific opportunity for the author's sense of humor to shine through.
"You're not kidding, are you? You think someone's trying to kill us. But why?"
"Because of your ugly coat? How the fuck should I know?" he grumbled as he lifted his head and scanned the darkness. For what, she couldn't have said. It wasn't as if he could actually see anything, not without those special nighttime vision goggles. But stranger than that, she could swear he sniffed the air.
So Tammy is a big girl, big and beautiful. She's not ashamed, she's proud. But that doesn't mean that she isn't still a bit self conscious. But I love that she's not some skinny waif, she was definitely more relatable. There were times I just thought, "Yes, we get it, she's big!" because it was brought up a bit. In books where the heroine is skinny, it's not often brought up, but when it's a curvy woman, you tend to see it advertised often. I get why, and I loved Tammy to pieces, but I think I would have loved her no matter her size.
Reid tore into them, the coppery taste of blood warm on his tongue. While he might have balked in his human shape at the flavor, his beast reveled in it. He ruled these parts. He protected his clan. And these scurvy curs would feel his wrath.
So for the plotline; did I enjoy it? Hell yes! Like I said, crazy things start happening right from the get go. Situations often find themselves with Reid on the receiving end of Tammy's defenses and/or anger. It was hilarious and exciting, and even a bit breath stealing at times too. Tammy and Reid definitely were able to get some steamy moments in there. And if you've read Eve before, you know those moments can definitely take your breath away.
So shifters. Lots of them. Bears, wolves, moose (not meese!), and foxes. I'm sure there are even more that we haven't met yet. But this was an awesome start to a series, one that I am definitely going to be watching the entire way through. I loved that it takes place in Alaska, it's a landscape I don't see often in books. A very nice change, indeed. If you love shifter romances, definitely put this one on your list!
