Awesome, I’m really happy to be featured on your blog today.
How are you?
I'm doing pretty good! Hey, it's Friday, right?
So you have a new
release, Rain. If you were talking to a
stranger who had no idea what the book was about, and you had less than one
minute – what would you tell them?
Rain isn’t
released quite yet but will be this year. Rain
is about a teenage girl named Taylor. She received news that changed her life
drastically, and she realized that she had taken everything for granted, like
so many others do. In the beginning, she was in denial, and she met Kyle who
recently graduated, and moved in with his dad across the street from her. She
hadn’t been ready to talk about what she found out, but she ended up telling
him everything. It was easy because he was a stranger, but he won’t be for much
longer.
What (or who) is the
inspiration for your main characters, Taylor and Kyle?
Subconsciously Taylor Swift inspired Taylor a little, but
that wasn’t exactly intended. Otherwise I didn’t have any inspirations; I just
saw a scene with Taylor and went with it. I’m not consciously aware of having a
particular inspiration for Kyle.
Did you have an
outline or any sort of plan when you started writing Rain, or are you more of a
“let’s see where the story takes us” author?
No, I did not have an outline, I hate outlines. I start with
an image and just see where it takes me. Sometimes I have some ideas of what
will happen, and with this book I had future scenes pop into my head, screaming
for attention. I wrote them, and saved them in a separate document until I got
to the point in the story where they belonged.
The funny is that when I started this story in my fiction
writing class last January I never expected this to be the first book I
finished. I had wanted to work on an end of the world themed novel (Blood Red Sky), but my teacher’s
definition of fiction writing was realistic fiction writing.
Now that you have a
published book, do you have any advice for other new authors who are trying to
get published?
I’m not traditionally publishing, so I can’t give advice
there. For self-publishing, be ready for a lot of self-promoting and marketing.
It is a lot of work, but the end result is very rewarding.
A lot of authors
participate in tours, guest posts, interviews (ha!) and just a ton of
promo. How do you feel about that, are
you ready?
I was a book review blogger before I wrote this book, so I
know about all of these options, and have hosted quite a few on my blog. Now
that I am the author sending requests to do these posts, I’m realizing just how
much work it is. I think all of these things are great resources for promotion
and marketing, and I’m very thankful for these resources since I am self-publishing.
I think blogging first helped me prepare for it.
What is one thing you
didn’t expect from either being an author, or publishing a book – were there
any unexpected surprises?
Since I’m still in the early stages, not really yet, but I’m
sure there will be. I did have a few people that I don’t know added Breaking
Pointe and Rain onto their TBR list on Goodreads, which was pretty cool.
If you could have…
let’s say 10 million dollars, what is the first thing you would do?
After screaming and bouncing round like a crazy person, I
would buy a house.
I see you have two
other releases coming up, Breaking Pointe, and Blood Red Sky. Are these books related to Rain or
standalone? Do you have any news you’d
like to share about them?
Rain was intended
to be a standalone, but I do plan to write a book in Kyle’s perspective because
there is a lot that the reader doesn’t know about him in Rain. He definitely has his own story to tell. Breaking Pointe, and Blood
Red Sky are both separate standalones as of now. I haven’t finished Blood Red Sky yet, but it could end up
being a start of a series. I participated in National Novel Writing Month for
the first time November, 2013, and Breaking Pointe was the book I wrote in that
month. It is a revenge themed New Adult book. I’m sharing the blurbs for both
books below, and both can be added on Goodreads.

If you had to
recommend a book or two to a friend – and not your own books, what would you
recommend?
I highly recommend Hopeless
by Colleen Hoover, and all of her books. I’m a bit obsessed with her, and she
has a very inspiring story, a self-published author herself.

I’m going to finish editing Rain, and then release it for the world to read, and then move on
to editing Breaking Pointe. After
that, I will get back to Blood Red Sky,
which I’m really excited about.
