Guest Post/Excerpt - Knee Deep by Jolene Perry for Tribute Books

Knee Deep
Jolene Perry

Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He's her soul mate. He's more uptight every day, but it's not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she's adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he'll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He's the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she's playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.
Guest Post by Jolene Perry
Sometimes a story is more personal than you expect it to be.

I read an article in an online newspaper that talked about the YA books coming out that year which dealt with abusive relationships.

I'd part mapped one out a while back, and thought maybe I'd work on it - all evidence that the market had just gotten an influx of them didn't sway me the way it should have…

The more I wrote in the story, the more personal it became.

I was not ever hit by my boyfriend in high school. He never screamed and yelled at me - though I heard him trashing his room a few times when I left after an argument, and he didn't hesitate to show me when he was pissed about something.

He'd pick fights with me over the phone and hang up, knowing it meant I'd sneak out to "straighten things out."

There was one really horrible night with him that I'd blocked from my mind for a long time, that I remembered when I was writing, so I used it.

I see these cases my husband talks about with women who are beaten and bruised and making up excuses and going back over and over. One ended in murder a couple of weeks ago. A case my husband will be prosecuting when it goes to trial.

The abuse story I told is nowhere near that dramatic, but so much of Ronnie's story was mine. WAY more than I realized while I was writing it. When I got to the end, and started writing down the parts of her story that were real (I always do this for my author site), I realized more and more how much of me was in that girl.

I stared at my computer screen in shock.

I had one of my best friends, who was a guy, who I shared more with than I probably did to most of my girlfriends - (like Luke from Knee Deep) and a boyfriend I'd known since I was a kid (like Shawn from Knee Deep) And I felt this draw to my boyfriend, only because I'd known him for so long, not because we really had anything left in common.

I felt more like I was stuck in this relationship, and didn't even realize I didn't want to be there until I visited a friend in college and saw how much more LIFE was out there. It was just that the idea of this one person had been in my head for way too long.

And where did I end up? Married to the best friend.

People talk about writing what you know, and then talk about keeping yourself out of your books. But you know what? I KNEW that situation - and I know I'll get some bad reviews (like you always do - ESPECIALLY when you tackle a tough topic) that are going to say that Ronnie's actions weren't believable.

But here's the thing - I told her story, the best way I knew how. Ronnie's reactions with pieces of my truth. And there are some drastic differences, but there are also some startling similarities. So, to me, Ronnie's actions were completely and totally understandable.

And that's the story of how Knee Deep came to be.

Excerpt
 *~*~*~*~*~*

My front door opens. “Hello?” Shawn calls.

“In here!” I say back. Suddenly this feels weird. Why would this feel weird? This is just what happens when one of us is stuck at home. Why would today be any different? But my heart’s beating against the inside of my ribs, trying to tell me this is different.

Luke scoots away from the couch. Does he feel it too? That maybe him and me hanging out alone for the day might not have been the best idea?

Shawn steps through the hallway and scowls when his eyes meet mine and then pass to Luke. This shouldn’t be a big deal. Except...I’m so stupid. I was just thinking how I needed to make Shawn’s life outside of his house less stressful, and part of me knew it was weird that Luke was here without Shawn. I thought it, and did nothing. But again, it is just Luke.

“What’re you doing here?” Shawn asks. His dark eyes fix on Luke.

“I figured you’d be here, man.” Luke stands up. “It’s like we always ditch together, right?”

Romeo and Juliet kissing in the pool on the TV screen probably isn’t helping anything. Maybe Shawn won’t notice, or maybe it’s just sending my heart into crazy flutters because this tension between Shawn and Luke and, I guess, me, is happening during the most romantic scene of the movie.

“Uh, I don’t know.” Shawn’s still scowling, his brows pulled low and his jaw tight.

“You would’ve hated it,” I say. My eyes catch his, but his are as black as his mood seems to be. I’m so stupid. Why did I have to let Luke stay?

“Yeah, maybe.” Shawn’s narrowed eyes go from Luke to me, back and forth, as if judging the situation. Really? What did he think could possibly happen between Luke and I? Even if this is suddenly on my top three ‘most awkward moments’ ever. I can’t even think about what the other two might be. Maybe I’ve just found number one.

“Romeo and Juliet all day.” Luke laughs, but I know him well enough to see he’s trying really hard to be relaxed. His shoulders are too stiff, and his normal stance is too rigid. I wonder if Shawn sees it too. “Guess I’ll leave you two alone.” Luke’s trying hard to keep his voice light.

“Yeah.” Shawn has yet to return Luke’s smile. “I almost never see my girl anymore.”

It’s like I’m on the edge of my seat, tension pinpricking every part of me. I’ve never seen Shawn like this.

“Well, I should get my ass to rehearsal anyway.” Luke gives Shawn a friendly pat on the shoulder before heading outside.

I don’t watch him go. My eyes are on Shawn, trying to figure out what to expect next.

“What the hell was that?” His sharp gaze is now pointed directly at me.

I stand up and lean to the side, trying to be relaxed. “It didn’t seem like a big deal this morning.” Maybe if I play it off as nothing Shawn won’t be so mad. He knows Luke and I are friends. No big deal, I tell myself again. But I don’t know if I’m trying to convince myself or Shawn.

“Was he here when we were texting?” he asks. His voice may be low, but not in a good way. It’s low in a way that makes him sound like he’s past the edge of reasonable anger.

My body’s screaming for me to take a step back, which makes no sense. This is Shawn. My Shawn. “No.” But I’m weakening by the second, almost shaking inside. His jaw tightens again.

My eyes close as I remember, and dread fills my chest. “He got here as I sent my last one.” Is that bad? Good?

“And you didn’t think to tell me? What the hell is that?”

I jump at the sharpness of his voice. Shawn doesn’t need this stress. I know this. I reach forward to put my arms around him. We just need to hold one another for a minute, then it’ll all be fine.

He stops me, grabbing my arm—hard—just above my wrist.

“This is not okay.” His jaw is set.

“Hey.” My voice shakes. My body shakes. I’m actually scared of Shawn for the first time ever. I jerk my hand once, but he tightens his grip...impossibly tight. My lungs can’t pull in a breath; there’s just not enough air in the room anymore. “Shawn, you’re hurting me.” He can’t mean to hurt me. He can’t.

His face is stuck in a sharp scowl.

“He’s your friend.” My voice is crying. I want to try and pull my shaky arm out of his grasp again, but I’m afraid to; he’s squeezing so hard. Tears are hot against the back of my eyes, threatening to spill over.

“How would you feel if I spent all day with some chick?” The words come out as angry spit from between his teeth.

I open my mouth to answer but can’t, the lump in my throat has taken over. All I can think about is that I need to find something to say so he’ll let me go. Some way to get the air through my throat to form words. “It’s just Luke,” I plead, sucking in a breath.

“Whatever.” He throws my arm back at me, turns, and walks out the door, slamming it hard behind him. My body jumps at the sound.

I stumble backward onto the couch. I’m like a leaf battered about in the wind. Nothing’s working right. I need to sit. Normally I’d run after him, but I have no idea what to expect. And I’m afraid. OfShawn.

He’s never been that way before. Ever. He’s moody and particular, but this seems...extreme. I’m cradling my wrist with my other hand, afraid to look at any possible damage. It hurts to move it. What just happened here? How did it happen?

It’s like there suddenly must be something fundamentally wrong with the universe. But the TV’s still on. My house looks normal and quiet. I’m still breathing, but Shawn, my Shawn, just hurt me. Lying down seems so anti-climactic, but I can’t bring myself to do anything else.

When Juliet realizes Romeo’s dying the sobs take over, and I pull my knees to my chest as if making myself smaller will somehow dull the pain.

It doesn’t.

Review, The Mayfair Moon by JA Redmerski

Tite: The Mayfair Moon (The Darkwoods Trilogy #1)
Author: JA Redmerski
Published: January 2012
Genre: Werewolves! (that's a whole genre unto itself, right???)

After a nightmarish encounter with a werewolf, seventeen-year-old Adria Dawson loses her sister, but gains the love of a mysterious young man and his legendary family.

Strange and tragic things begin to happen in the small town of Hallowell, Maine: residents come down with an unexplainable ‘illness’ and some disappear. In the midst of everything, Isaac Mayfair is adamant about keeping Adria safe, even from her sister whom he has warned her to stay away from.

As unspeakable secrets unfold all around Adria, impossible choices become hers to bear. Ultimately, no matter what path she takes, her life and the lives of those she loves will be in peril. As she learns about the werewolf world she also learns why her place in it will change the destinies of many.

This story definitely filled my need for werewolves in my life.  And it brought werewolves to me in a new aspect.  JA Redmerski’s wolves are big, I mean, huge.  They are snarly big mean looking monsters.

First thing I noticed about this book is that it read very easily.  It felt like I was talking with an old friend, and I really liked that.  I didn’t feel like I was being told a story, so much as I was there for it.

Adria and Alex are sisters living in Georgia with their mother and her boyfriend.  Life isn’t perfect, its downright abusive on some levels.  But Adria isn’t old enough to get out, and Alex is staying for her sister.  On top of that, Adria feels like she needs to stay for her mother.  Then one night while they are out walking they witness something terrifying and crazy, and they are attacked.  It gave me the creeps, and I loved it!

After that, life is not the same.  And CPS steps in to remove Adria; they send her north to Maine to live with family.  Alex follows because that’s her sister, and they stick together.  But Alex hasn’t recovered to the same extent that Adria has.  She’s quiet and withdrawn, and just…different.

Adria is quick to make friends in Hallowell, Maine, and I loved them!  Ok, not all, but Harry.  Harry is a fantastic friend, the kind of friend that everyone should have at some time in their life.  He is honest and brave, and loyal to the core.  I loved Harry, and I would love to see more of him in the future!

Gratuitous Hot Truck
I have to admit, when Adria met the “bad guys” I was a bit excited.  Tattooed, tall, badass…. Lifted trucks.  I mean seriously, they were my dream guys.  Well, except for the whole bad part.  But even that was a bit exciting.  But in dealing with them we learn a bit about Adria, and I thought that was fantastic.  Adria might be young, but she isn’t some child.  She is older than her years, and I just thought her whole personality was really something beautiful.

In fact, the whole cast was fascinating.  They were colorful and vibrant, and each new character (and there were many!) brought a whole new facet to the story.  But its time.  It’s time for the namesake of this book, Isaac Mayfair.

Isaac is an enigmatic young man, who lives with just a ton of people.  There is instant chemistry between Adria and Isaac.  The first time they lay eyes on eachother you know there is something there.

“I think I had been in love with Isaac Mayfair all along, but now was the moment in time in which I knew it.”

Isaac and Adria are so obviously made for each other.  I love each of them separately, but together they are absolutely wonderful.  Sweet kisses and long embraces, that feeling that you are loved, wanted, needed… that’s the gift of Isaac.  But just why is he such a she-wolf magnet??  Geez, I just wanted him to push them all off of him!  It was making me jealous!!  Otherwise Isaac is everything you could hope for in a man, a wolf, and a mate.  I love him!  I think I’ve said that….

This book has a ton of information in it, but you don’t feel like you are just reading facts.  JA Redmerski did a superb job of weaving history and facts in with the story.  I was super excited to see that the expected publication date is July 20 for the second book in the trilogy.  Don’t quote me if that has changed, but either way I believe it is coming up real soon.  And I will definitely be on that auto-buy list.

So whether you are a fan of Zia, Sebastian, Harry, Nathan, Beverlee, Alex, Adria or Alex…. Or any number of the others, this book has something to offer everyone.  There are some fight scenes that are awesome, that really show the brute strength of these wolves.  There are elders in this book, and their story is also one to really dig into.  Honestly, I just couldn’t have asked for more.  If you like werewolves, I think you will love this story!

Excerpt/Giveaway - The Wounded King by Jonathan Winn

The Wounded King
(The Martuk Series)
Jonathan Winn

A sacrifice. A dying King. Bones in the stone, blood in the wine. A Queen consumed by the Darkness.

From ancient Uruk, The Almost King tells his tale. Of The Elder and his cunning Priests in their robes of red and gold. Of an Old Woman who can call the power of the Dark Gods. Of his mother, the Queen, and his dying brother, the King.

And of the Darkness, an evil from before the Time of the Moon. Inescapable, its hunger never-ending, its shadow fed by the Priests, slowly overwhelming his family.

Drowning in a sea of red and gold, the Almost King battles an unwinnable war as he navigates the wreckage towards his fate as … The Wounded King.

*** EXCERPT ***

In the silence of the Temple, they spoke.
A murmur, a sigh, an awakening, a cry.
Mother …
Father …
King …
I moved my cheek from the stone, the pain of the whispers too great to bear.
Although night, the workers -- slaves, prisoners of war, many of them mere boys -- still pulled and pushed the immense blocks into place, the already overwhelming Temple forever expanding, a veritable mountain of stone overlooking the city.
For many of them, this was all they knew, their lives after capture, after defeat, one of constant work, nonexistent sleep, and death, quick and inevitable.
Above them all, the Priests watched.
And here, under the light of an almost full moon, the pain, the rage, the powerless despair of all those trapped and troubled bones in the stone surrounded me like a fog.
In the quiet, safe in the dark, far from those who watched and those who worked, I pressed myself to the cool rock.
I would listen.
Cry …
Whimper …
Sob …
Yes, I feel you.
Wound …
Suffer …
Die …
I pulled away.
Die …
King …
Die …
“They know you.”
I turned.
A small woman stood behind me, her long hair as silver as the light bathing her, the years in her face softened by the glow of the moon.
I glanced around for my guards before remembering I had left them hours ago, ordering them away before climbing the hill to the Temple.
“Your guilt needed solitude,” she said.  “Your shame too great to share, yes?”
She waited.
I nodded.
Yes.
“And this is why you, the Almost King, stand here now, at this hour, under the moon, listening.”
She stepped closer.
Though draped in woolen, the rough fabric scarred by clumsily mended rips and tears, her feet bare, her wiry frame alarmingly thin, she carried herself with an unapologetic sense of majesty and dignity and strength as she moved near.
“Is your power worth all that death?” she asked.
“No,” I said, the answer quick and unthinking.  “No.”
“And yet it is not something you can deny, this power.  This crown.  It will be yours regardless of what you want or what you do.  Or what I do.  Born into this, you are as trapped as those in the stone.”
The tears threatened to come.  I blinked.  And blinked again.
“The most powerful of men,” she continued gently, “utterly powerless to change what must be changed.”
Watching me, she grew silent as if she, too, were listening.
She turned her head, her gaze settling on the workers in the distance, the sweat on their skin shining under the glow of torchlight.
“Your mother is one with the Dark Gods, yes?” she asked.
I hesitated.
“There’s no need to answer,” she then said.  “It’s commonly known, understood.  We barbarians, as she calls us, here in the city talk of her and the Priests and their ancient religion.  Those beliefs from the Time of the Moon.  Of their worshipping those who must be paid in blood, in flesh, in fear.  In the tears and cries of those they slaughter.”
“This is known?”
Looking at me, she continued.
“It is also known, and spoken of, that once these souls are bled and lifeless and useless, they burn --”
“Stop.  Please.”
She stopped.
It was my turn to watch the muscles straining as the strangers pulled and pushed, braided rope splitting and shredding .
“The gift you must give,” she said, echoing my mother.
“Is something I regret,” I quickly said.  “Something I wish I didn’t have to do.  Something I wish I had never done.”
“But it’s done.”
I looked at her.
“She’s a very powerful woman, your mother,” she continued.  “Not many can deny her.  Not many dare.  Those who do .... ”
Growing quiet, she left the thought unfinished.
“And the Priests?” I asked.  “What of them?  Do the people talk about the Priests?”
“Yes, they do.  And they understand what you and your mother do not:  the Priests are more powerful than you know.”
“She believes she’s a God.”
“An easy lie for them to feed her,” she answered.  “And her mind …”
Hesitating, she looked for the words.
“Her mind is wounded and hungry.  Desperate for comfort, the grief, the guilt, the horror at what she’s done still at war with the delusion of her immortality.”
“She struggles,” I agreed.
“And eats.”
Confused, I looked at her, her eyes almost silver under the light of the moon.
“The bones are in the stones, yes?” she asked.
I waited.
“And what of the flesh?  The flesh you burn before they grind these bones?”
She stopped, watching me before asking again.
“What of the flesh?”
Now, I've had a conversation with Jonathan, and he says that you do not have to read Martuk... The Holy in order to enjoy The Wounded King.  In fact, he says "...The Wounded King is actually a bit of a prequel to his part of the story in Martuk, but you needn't have read Martuk for it to make sense" But if you ask me, I think you should read both, because they both sound fantastic.  So to make that easier for you, I offer up this:
(which has an excerpt so you can get a feel for that story)

About the author...
Screenwriter, playwright, and author of Martuk … The Holy, Jonathan Winn was born in Seattle, but raised two hours south in a very small town in Western Washington State. After graduating high school and living in Los Angeles for the better part of a decade, and desperate for four seasons instead of constant sun, he moved to New York City where he happily lived in Greenwich Village with his two dogs. But after almost twenty years, the pull of family led him back to the Northwest where he now lives once again. Happily.

Like most writers, every word Jonathan writes is accompanied by endless cups of coffee with lots of milk and sugar (the ratio changing depending on whether he slept five hours or six hours the night before). He's also regarded as politely relentless by his friends, unbearably annoying by his enemies, and recently discovered he makes a mean fried chicken, often used to placate those aforementioned annoyed ones.

The Wounded King is his second book, the first in an ongoing collection of Short Fiction called The Martuk Series.

Review - Silent Bombs Falling On Green Grass by Russell Mardell

Title: Silent Bombs Falling On Green Grass
Author: Russell Mardell
Published:  2010 by Troubador Publishing
Format: Print book provided by author for review

Welcome to Mewlish Lull - the sort of town you pass through on your way to somewhere else without even noticing it exists. This debut collection of short fiction presents a bizarre portrait of a world just to the left of reality. In twelve stories and with a cast of oddball characters, through the most absurd of comedies, the darkest of nightmares and those quiet moments of madness that live within us all Silent Bombs Falling on Green Grass takes us to a strange town where anything could happen... If only you could fit in. But sometimes being an outsider is the only way to be...

Before I began reading this story, I knew this book would be unlike anything I’ve read thus far.  And I was completely correct in that assumption.

First, the cover.  I’m in love with this cover.  So many covers have such hard lines, such defined themes, that this one really is something that is going to make you think.  You have to look at it to figure out all of the shapes.  The vagueness of it all is just beautiful.   And then you open the book and start to read.

Silent Bombs Falling On Green Grass contains twelve stories.  The language they are written with is so artistic and beautiful.  Don’t get afraid of it, its not like it is hard to understand… it’s just different from what I normally read.  So all of these stories center in and around the area of Mewlish Lull.  While Googling to find out if Mewlish Lull is a real place (as far as I could tell, it is not) I stumbled upon one review that compared it to Twilight Zone.  And instantly I said to myself “yes!”  That is exactly the perfect comparison.  Silent Bombs Falling On Green Grass is a bit eerie, a bit horror, a tad humorous, and a bit reality.

Of course, I can’t go over every story.  That’s your job to read it.  But a couple I really liked are Rain, Armand Drinks Whiskey, and Four Doors Down.

In Rain the story begins with a man on a train, on his way to Mewlish Lull.  The narrator has such a distinct voice, I could easily picture him being Ewan McGregor or even John Cusack.  The voice kind of feels like it is frustrated with life, tired of it all… and on a train heading to a place that is unknown.

“The train station was an art gallery where everyone was putting themselves on display.”

It tells of one night in Mewlish Lull that is oddly filled with a lot of action for him.  He gets the chance to be a hero, to meet a woman, and see something very odd…in a bathtub.

Next, Armand Drinks Whiskey.  This was a very odd tale.  There were moments I became confused, but then I had to wonder if that was a little bit of the point.  Tatch watches a man every day from his office window.  This man has a distinct routine.  And so Tatch decides to mess with that a bit.

First, he steals the man’s phone.  And then he watches as the man definitely seems  a bit off without it.  And then the phone rings and he answers it.  The man’s name is David.  And then Tatch does something that is definitely teetering on the edge of sanity.

He begins to steal the man’s identity.  He learns his signature, speaks to his family on the phone.  I really felt like he was losing his mind during this whole process.  I had to ask myself, “Did he actually become homeless and crazy, or was it all a fantasy in his head while he daydreamed at work?”  I’m still not really sure, and that’s what I love.  You really have to think while reading this book.

And lastly, Four Doors Down. This story scared me!  We begin with Ronald, and he fell asleep on the train leaving Mewlish Lull.  When he wakes up he has missed his stop and he is now in Hanging Twitch. Then he notices the man next to him is…dead. Now he is in the middle of nowhere.  There is a man, I don’t know if he is a train conductor, or someone who works at the train stop in Hanging Twitch.  But he is definitely an odd fellow.  He informs Ronald that he is expected to stay the night because the police Sergeant wants to speak to him in the morning, and there are no more trains out that night. And there is the matter of the corpse to contend with.

The man has arranged for Ronald to stay at a guest house…and they must get the corpse there as well.  This town is so small that there is no police, no hospital, and definitely no morgue.  The trip to the house is a bit creepy and a little disturbing.  But what happens when he gets to his room in the house is when the fear started.  I’m not going to ruin this surprise for you, but I wouldn’t suggest reading this story before you go to bed (as I did!)

So if you are in the mood for something very different, I highly suggest checking this book out.  It is full of surprises, twists and turns. It is very clever and extremely well written.
