Ashlynne Laynne - The Progeny - Guest Post/Giveaway

“No fate other than the one I choose.” The timeless creed, and tattoo, bore by the Rousseaus— a vampire clan with the purest bloodline of any vampire family. Out of this clandestine group came one who was different, yet the same: Ascher - a half-bloodling— half- human, half vampire.

Ascher questions the purpose for his existence and which world he truly belongs to: the human world or the vampire world. Two months from sealing to Ursula— a prearranged union to a woman he abhors — he’s at his wit’s end. He knows if he calls off the sealing, the Romanian clan will strike with deadly force, but he cannot see eternity with a cold empty shell of a woman like Ursula.

Just when he thought life was complicated enough, he meets Shauna— a beautiful, bi-racial human wiccan — and immediately develops an unshakable attraction to her. She makes him feel alive and vital despite his origins and Ascher makes a decision that turns his immortal world upside down ."

Today we have author Ashlynne Laynne here, to talk to us about vampires!  I know we all love that, right?  I know I do!  And at the end, please enter the Rafflecopter for your chance to win a copy of The Progeny!

The New Breed of Vampire

Why write about vampires?

I've been obsessed with horror movies since I was very young. My grandmother took me to see Creepshow at the dollar movie, when I was nine. The dollar movie has long been gone but that day spurred my love of the horror genre.

I'm a horror fanatic. I'll watch anything—slasher, cheesy b rated, zombie, vampire, witches. You name it; I will or have already seen it. My movie library is more than half horror.

My upcoming series is about a family of vampires and one within their family who is different, yet the same. Ascher is a half-bloodling (half-human and half vampire). His skin possesses the warmth of a human's yet he lives off blood and is immortal like his family.

I and other authors are bringing forth a new breed of vampire. The days of the cold-blooded, garlic fearing, cross avoiding fiends of old are slowly giving way to a new warrior. The new blood is tougher, meaner, and more human-like. They fall deeper in love than any of their predecessors. These guys have the gentle touch of a feather but will tear an enemy apart with the same hands. They're as passionate about their clan ties as they are about the women who stir their blood.

They're bold, sexy warriors with hearts of gold and wills of steel. Their bodies are lean, sculpted immortal vessels of paranormal strength and ability. They’re devoted brothers, enemy slayers and erotic lovers capable of completely satisfying their chosen mate.

Authors like Brenda Dyer and myself, believe that our imaginations dictate our characters’ worlds. We’ve empowered ourselves to freely interpret our mythical beings—even if it goes against the grain of traditional vampire roles. We’ve created feeling and intense vampires that are outside the typical vampire box. In Brenda’s paranormal romance, Love’s Prophecy, her vampires are demon slayers who appear just as human as you or me. They love passionately, eat food and feel the full gamut of human emotions.

While I’m not one to conform, I subscribe to the fact that vampires are pale and blood drinkers. I, however, don’t have mine running around draining the life out of poor, unsuspecting victims. I'm a purist in believing that they are cold-skinned and burn in sunlight. I'm not one to believe that vampires are emotionless, evil fiends who sleep in coffins and plan the demise of us warm-blooded humans.

The humanization of the "undead" makes for more interesting and intense love stories with the ability to suck the reader in while fueling the imagination.

And really...why is it so hard to believe that a vampire might have the emotional capacity to love as much as a human? They typically were human once and surely felt the full range of emotions during that time. So, why wouldn't that carry over into immortality?

With the Twilight craze, True Blood and the Vampire Diaries (all of which I think are fabulous) vampires have taken on a sexy, new persona becoming objects of longing, lust and rabid curiosity for young and older women alike. And who could blame us? I mean...if a vampire that looked like Ian Somerhalder wanted to bite me, I wouldn't say no.

He wouldn’t need his vampire mind control for me to comply.

About Ashlynne Laynne:
Ashlynne Laynne has always had a soft spot in her heart for vampires but grew tired of the garlic fearing, sun loathing creatures of old. An avid horror movie fan, she tends to enjoy media and music that is of a younger, more eclectic nature. This was the catalyst for her writing The Progeny. The vampire/witch pairing is unique and different when most books pair vampires with werewolves.
The infinite possibilities, for such a wickedly unique couple, intrigued her. There is no shortage of romance, steam and surprises in The Progeny. These books are for adults and contain adult sensuality and themes, but minimal profanity. She loves writing on the edge and teetering between the erotica and romance genres. She thinks of Ascher and Shauna as the damned version of Romeo and Juliet.
She’s currently working on book two of the series entitled Blood Bonds. In her spare time, Ashlynne enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family. Ashlynne juggles the hats of wife, mother, full time employee and part-time writer, hoping to write full time one day soon.
Ashlynne lives in North Carolina with her husband and teenage son.

About The Progeny
At its core, The Progeny is simply a story about a man and woman who fall in love, and the fact that he’s a half-blood (half-human, half vampire) and she’s a Wiccan human are secondary factors. It started as research about the Salem witch trials, some rough sketches of a special family heirloom that my guys would wear and two names—Ascher and Shauna. In the beginning, of the book, Ascher is grumpy. Frankly, who could blame him? He’s engaged to seal to Ursula—a cold and careless vampire who wants nothing more than to get her hands on a bloodstone— and he feels conflicted about his existence.
All of that changes when he meets Shawnette McCutchin. She’s beautiful, intriguing and possesses some of the most potent blood that he’s ever smelled. A war immediately begins inside Ascher. He craves Shauna’s blood just as much as he craves her body and the closer they get, the harder it is for him to control his urges. After Ascher calls off the sealing to Ursula, the trouble begins. His family’s peaceful period ends when Ursula’s army attacks the Rousseaus. Kidnapping, some steamy love scenes between our hero and heroine and Wiccan rage complete the plot.

Gastien Part 2: From Dream to Destiny - Caddy Rowland

Author: Caddy Rowland

Format: Ebook provided by author for review

From Goodreads
“I am Gastien Beauchamp, artist and lover. Any Frenchman would tell you that a peasant could never own property in nineteenth century France. Yet here I am, in my very own studio. The personal cost was horrendous. I barely survived the choices I made, and my sanity was pushed to its limits.

Still, I finally now have security, peace, and freedom. For the rest of my life I can spend time “making love to the color”, making love to beautiful women, and enjoying the wild nightlife of bohemian Montmartre. What more could a man need or want?

Then, one night, I see her. One look at Sophie, and my heart wants to betray me! I try to tell myself that I know better. Who needs love, anyway? I am already married-to my art!

No woman would ever understand and accept my lifestyle; nor am I about to give that lifestyle up. Not when I paid so dearly for it! Besides, I am too badly damaged to ever open up my heart…and if Sophie found out about my past she would not want to even know my name. I can’t take that chance. I have had enough pain to last me a lifetime.”

****

This is book two in the Gastien Beauchamp series, taking place from 1855 – 1899.  This book starts with a lot of review of the previous book.  Of course, I recommend you read Part 1, The Cost of The Dream.  But if you don’t, you will get the basics of it throughout this book.   I must say, I enjoyed this book much more than the first.  While both books are dark and portray a very honest look at Gastien’s life, this one had a bit more lighthearted moments that made it better for me.

Ok, so trying to focus on this book, and not so much the both books together.  Gastien is now an adult, living in his studio in Montemartre.   He is pretty much the same as he was previously.  My views of him as a person are not terrific.  I think he is selfish and immature, and a bit of a whiner when he doesn’t get his way.  He fills his life with superficial women, and this always leaves him looking for something more – as he is constantly reaffirming he does not want to be in love.   Sex, painting, drugs, and drinking…these are all things that Gastien is a happy and willing slave to.  Frankly, it began to be a bit tiresome to constantly have to deal with his insecurities and troubles that his addictions caused him.  Just as it is in the real world when you have to deal with a self centered addict.

See, this might seem like I am bashing the book.  Oh no, I’m not at all.  I found this an enjoyable read for the most part.  On the down side, there was a lot of repetition that I could have done without.  The thing is, this story is not sugarcoated.  Gastien grew up relatively poor, left home with nothing, went to the “big city” and he knows what scraping bottom feels like.  He was so low he had to scrape bottom just to look up.   He got a few breaks  here and there, made many sacrifices for his one true love (his art) and landed in a pretty good situation in Montemartre.  You get to see his whole life, and not just the good parts.

He finds love, real true love, in a young girl named Sophie.  This relationship is not without its troubles, but they have open and honest communication, and they make it work.  I can’t imagine how, but they do.  When they first meet, he is flustered and makes slips like asking for a kisskey instead of a whiskey one night at the pub when she is a waitress.  These little details really add to the story of their romance.  It doesn’t happen with a flash bang like in shorter novels, this romance is nurtured and grown until it becomes the rare flower that it is.

There is quite the cast of characters in this book, and you really get a chance to know them.  One of my favorites is Gastien’s best friend, Mic.  Mic is… well, after being Gastien’s friend for decades he should qualify for sainthood.  In fact, there is a scene where Mic is reminiscing and you get a quick view of Gastien from his eyes, from the first moment he saw him on the street.  This was so touching and beautiful, it really shows that family is indeed not just the people who you share blood with, but rather those who you share life with.

There were a few surprises in this book that I didn’t see coming, and I’ll leave those unspoiled.  Lets just say that in this book you should be prepared for the parade of emotions you are going to feel with Gastien and his choices.  There is definite happiness, a touch of romance, a splash and a rub of lust, and there is sorrow.  Like I’ve said before, I am not necessarily sure this is a “feel good”  book.  If you are looking for the next power couple in the fiction world on a whirlwind romance of lust and love, you should look elsewhere.  This is a gritty and raw look at the life of a young man who has convictions and sticks to them no matter the cost.  It’s a good story, and if you like historical fiction, I think  you will enjoy it.

EDIT:
Ok, so I'm thinking about this review and this book, and there is more that I want to say. Gastien is a very complex man... He got me so upset with his choices and his decisions, if he were in front of me I may have flown off the handle.  BUT!  Yes, there is a but - when good things happened for him, I found myself smiling and happy too.  When disaster struck, and it did several times, my heart broke for him.  He is a flawed man, but there is a raw honesty there that was appealing, even as he was doing the worst things that he could, and stomping on the hearts of those who loved him.  He came from being abused and under-loved, and he gained this circle of family around him that loved him unconditionally.  I don't know, I guess its a love-hate relationship I have with Gastien.

Read the book and decide for yourself.  Come back here and talk to me about it, or email me :)

Bewitching Blog Tours: Eve Eden vs The Zombie Horde - Excerpt/Giveaway

Eve Eden Vs The Zombie Horde
By Suz Korb
Genre: Paranormal YA

Kidnapped by a vampire, epically farted on by a pug and dragged through the pits of Hell. Welcome to Eve Eden’s world in the small and strange town of Twin Forest.

Eve has goals. She has dreams and ambitions that don’t involve staying in this weird, podunk town. When supernatural forces collide, dropping her into the heart of England, she’s not pleased. When Eve said she wanted to get the heck out of dodge, she didn’t mean getting transported into a castle dungeon.

A hellish incident turns Eve’s hair white. She can’t explain a slight attraction to a vampire who’s been sent to kill her. Can life get any worse? Apparently it can, because just around the corner at Twin Forest’s cemetery…waits the zombie horde.

An excerpt from Eve Eden vs. the Zombie Horde starring Thunderbug: the epic farting pug.

After everything I've seen. After everything I've been subjected to over the past... however many days, this has got to be the most confounding experience of all.

As Nathan's lips gently (gently!) touch my own, my face burns. My eyes start to water and I don't have a clue what I should do. So I just shut my heavy lids.

I've never been kissed.

Least of all by a blood-sucking vampire!

I'm so panicked and confused my brain wanders off to the random thought of dogs. In fact, I can actually hear a dog barking in my imagination right now.

Nathan pulls away from me.

There's a rush of air between our faces now, it immediately cools my cheeks.

"Bark! Bark! Bark!"
Bark, bark, bark?

"Where did that dog come from?" Nathan says.

My eyes fly open. I whip my head around to see none other than Thunderbug bounding towards us on his little pug paws.

"That pup belongs to Bubbles!" I say with a smile. I've never been more happy to see someone else's dog in my entire life.

Turning my whole body toward the racing pug, I go down on one knee and reach my arms forward. I'm ready to catch him. At the rate he's running though, he might succeed in knocking me back.

Thunderbug leaps over a stalagmite on the floor of the cave. Then he jumps over an even higher one. Impossibly, the flat faced little scamp next flies over a ten foot stalagmite. He heads toward me, jumps in an arch over my head and I watch as if in slow motion as he crashes into Nathan's chest.

If I expected the pug to bounce off and crash to the floor, I'd be wrong.
Thunderbug totally takes Nathan down.

I barely have time to register the look of surprise on his face, before he vanishes. What's more is, Thunderbug disappears too.

No wait! Nathan's over there, in the far corner of the cave. There's Thunderbug too! How is it possible for a doggy to move as fast as a vampire? I don't know, but Thunderbug is doing so.

Actually, the pug is now flashing around the room in locations different to where Nathan is appearing. During the last flash of re-appearance, Nathan blinks into the place just behind Thunderbug's rear end.

Uh oh...

Yep. Thunderbug, lets out a gaseous explosion from his butt that is so epic, I swear I see a mushroom-cloud blast into Nathan.

He goes down. The vampire has just been farted into submission by a super flatulent pug.

Sizzling PR: Guest Post: Sarah Ballance - Unforgiven

Today I am very lucky to welcome Sarah Ballance to the stage, to talk about writing sex scenes! I can completely imagine how difficult it must be to write one, so lets sit back and see what she has to say! Welcome, Sarah! Take it away!

Riley Beckett's past just came back to haunt her . . . and this time, he's got a gun.

When Gage Lawton finds his brother shot dead on his back porch, every shred of evidence points to one person: Gage's former lover, Riley. He and she didn't part ways on good terms, and he's not planning to rekindle anything now--not when he's got a revolver pointed at her head and a finger on the trigger.

A year after Riley swore she and Gage were over, he returns in a hail of gunfire. One look into those achingly familiar blue eyes and she knows how wrong she was to let him go, but now far more than their heated past stands in the way. A twist of fate puts them in the crosshairs of a killer, leaving Riley with two slim options: trust her greatest betrayer or face a murderer on her own.

Sarah Ballance: Sex in the Middle

Okay, I admit it. Sex scenes hate me. I don't force them onto the page—heck, they're as natural as, well, sex—but the fact is, like me or not, they belong in my stories. Most of my writing is in the romantic suspense genre, and there's something about the marriage of life-on-the-line intrigue with sexual tension that always comes to a rather explosive culmination of needs. But seriously, that's on paper. Because in real life (if I get to call made-up things "real life"), when we get to the good stuff my characters are suddenly all too aware that I'm in the room, staring, waiting to jot down whatever they're about to do. Can you say awkward?

But the problem isn't so much my characters. It actually stems elsewhere. Fact is, I'm incapable of writing explicit sex. There's a list of words I just can't use in every day conversation, and a lot of them are used in the writing of uber hot sex. And it's not that I have anything against erotica, because I love it . . . in every aspect but the one preventing me from writing it.

Of course, there's always the flipside. No sex at all. I've done that once. (Writing, I mean. Not IRL, because that would be unconscionable. *glares at you for even thinking such a thing*) My novella HAWTHORNE is utterly sex free, and darn if it didn't make the Amazon best seller list for ghost stories. Absolutely there is a market for "clean" fiction—and it's one of which I'm proud to have a very small part—but my characters demand action, and I can't say I blame them.

Which leaves me in a bit of a pickle. (Don't go Freudian on me. I just mean "pickle," although I have no idea what pickles have to do with rocks and hard places.

In the ain't-nobody-effen-anybody middle.

Postscript: Contrary to pretty much everything just mentioned, the naughty bits of UNFORGIVEN were unbelievably easy to write. Was this change on the horizon ? Nope. Along came TIDE OF LIES, releasing April 2, and I'm *still* picking plaster out of my head from beating my skull against the wall. Which, by the way, is not conducive to character sex. Kills the mood a little.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Sarah and her husband of over fourteen years live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they're asleep. She often jokes that she writes to be around people who will listen to her, but her characters aren't much better than her kids. Fortunately, her husband is quite supportive, having generously offered to help her research "the good parts." She's never had to ask twice.

EXCERPT
*********
“What’s this? A party and no one told me?”
At the newest addition to the conversation, Isabella’s pulse accelerated double-time. She looked toward the door
Man, I don’t need this today.
Brady Jacobs walked—no, sauntered—into the office and heading toward Ethan, spared her not a glance.
Black denim jeans encased his firm, shapely ass like a second skin and a black T-shirt with sleeves rolled over his beautiful biceps. He looked good enough to eat. A flood of heat coursed through her body. Brady was a man who was confident in himself and when he entered the room, there was a ripple effect. Everyone sat up to take notice of him and women practically swooned, eager to catch his eye. But Brady rarely gave any one woman the time of day. He was adamant about keeping his personal life private, and his no-commitment rule was always in full force. Something he was always upfront about with the ladies.
“Hey, pal. Great game this morning.” Brady slapped Ethan on the back.
“Shit, Jacobs. You kicked my ass and then some.” Ethan chuckled. “My head just wasn’t in it today.” Isabella could see Ethan’s gaze move again toward the newspaper on Alicia’s desk.
If it wouldn’t be obvious, I’d snatch it and run to burn it.
“Morning, Ms. Alicia. How’s my sugar-girl today?” Brady headed over to Alicia’s desk, ruffling her hair as he stepped behind her, as if she were his little sister.
Leave it to Brady. Always make the ladies feel special.
“Get lost, Jacobs. I’m sick of seeing you around here,” Alicia said flippantly.
She must really be pissed about the photo. Isabella let out a frustrated sigh, causing three sets of eyes to look her way.
“Morning, Brady.” Isabella smiled, hoping she looked like a woman with not a care in the world. “What brings you to the precinct this early in the morning?”
Brady’s gaze held hers for seconds longer than she would have liked.
“Actually, I came to see Alicia. I need to go over the Vaughn case with her. I had another vision last night.” He spoke without hesitation.
Trenton’s finest P.I. had become the city’s favorite after his first vision had saved the Walker twins eight years ago. The twins, then seven years old, had wandered off into the woods behind their family home one afternoon. When they didn’t return to the house for dinner that night, their frantic mother had called the police, begging someone to help her find her missing boys.
Within hours, an Amber Alert had been called and hundreds of citizens and every cop available had combed the Walkers’ woods, looking for the boys. After six hours without success, exhaustion had set in with many of the volunteers. Everyone had worked tirelessly, but when there seemed to be no hope in sight, Brady showed up, at a frantic near-run, and charged into the woods. Within thirty minutes, he came back out with a boy tucked under each arm.
Only after the Walkers had been calmed, the boys tucked into bed, did Isabella and Connor question Brady. With much resistance, Brady confessed to his ESP, the visions that had begun during his stint in the Marines.
Most times, out of nowhere—Brady could be sleeping, driving, taking a shower—and a vision would claim him. In the eight years since the Walker incident, Brady had probably saved more lives than most cops.
While he didn’t have visions for every beating, murder, kidnapping, or mugging in New Jersey, high-profile incidents seemed to find a channel in Brady.
With each high-profile case solved successfully, Trenton’s citizens claimed him as a favorite son. If a child ran away, parents would hire Brady to assist in bringing them home. If there were a murder, police at a dead end would call Brady in.
No one thought anything unkind about him or his visions.
It made his P.I. business a huge success and he took it all in stride. Isabella admired him for it.
“Damn, Brady. Why didn’t you call me immediately?” Alicia growled in a disgruntled voice.
“I am telling you, Alicia. I had to get the whole thing in order before contacting you.” Brady shook his head and headed for the window overlooking West Street, the one she had just moments ago been staring out of.
“Well? What have you got for me?” Alicia demanded.
With a chuckle, Brady turned back to Alicia. “Impatient damn woman, aren’t you? Just like your cousin. Always impatient for more.”
Isabella felt her cheeks burn and prayed Brady wasn’t being an ass on purpose to start further questions running through Alicia’s mind. She didn’t need them from her.
“If people would deliver, Brady, I wouldn’t need more,” Isabella declared with some satisfaction. His eyes turned a darker grey than their normal silver color.
Don’t mess me with me and think you’ll win, big guy.

She also loves vampires who nibble the necks of the heroines, ghosts who can't leave a loved one, shape-shifters who are sexier than hell and the thought of her very own werewolf or were-cat to tame makes her tremble!
