Interview & Giveaway - Tessa Armytage

Author: Tessa Armytage

Just a few days ago I finished this book, and I fell in love with it.  The characters are amazing, the location is spectacular, and the course of events will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat waiting for more.  Read my review HERE

And today I am very excited to have Tessa Armytage here to talk about the book, "Bess, Nicholas & A Dog Called Bones".  Read through, and then enter the giveaway at the end!

INTERVIEW
*** *** *** ***

Today we are welcoming author Tessa Armytage to Fictional Candy.  Welcome Tessa, so glad to have you here!
Liz, it's a great privilege to be appearing on Fictional Candy.  Thank you for having me.

First, can you tell the Fictional Candy readers a bit about your book, “Bess, Nicholas & a Dog Called Bones”?
I set out to do something a little out of the ordinary in that the focus is on just how scary it is to fall in love.  When we give our heart to another we make them the most powerful person in the world – or at least our world – and we make ourselves vulnerable to a world of hurt.  It takes a lot of courage to fall in love, I think.  Lovers – people who love life and each other – are the bravest people in the world.
You did a great job of that.  Not only was it easy to put myself in Bess's place, but it took me back to  those times in my life.

Valley Vineyard is such a beautiful location for such a story.  Did you fashion Nicholas’ home after any location in particular?
Aha, you've got me there.  Valley Vineyard is in reality the home of my first love.  He broke my heart and I'd like to think I broke his a little bit too, but before then we made love like there was no tomorrow in one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Actually, Liz, if you don't mind, I'd like to include a few links so readers can see the place for themselves.
Oh my goodness, those pictures are breathtaking!  It certainly seems like a place created for falling in love!

So Tessa, any chance you will be releasing “Bess, Nicholas & A Dog Called Bones” in a print version?
If the ebook takes off, then yes, I'd love to.
I will definitely be on the look out for that.  This would be a great addition to my collection!

And while I am on the subject, any plans for a sequel?  Maybe Alex’s story?
It's a bit embarrassing to admit this but when I finish writing a book I always vow to write a sequel because I have so much trouble letting go of the characters.  In this case letting go was made doubly difficult because of the adorably mischievous Bones.  I'll be honest: I cried my eyes out.  After a while I usually start to get over saying goodbye, but now you've got me thinking.  Alex is such an interesting character and you just know there's more to him than meets the eye.  I can't rule out a sequel.
I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Like Bess (and every other warm blooded woman that is going to read this book), I am just fascinated with Nicholas.  He is rough around the edges, in terms of relationships, but he has got everything else down firm.  Who do you think could play him in a movie?
Oh definitely Chris Isaak.  Who better to play a devil with the voice of an angel, at his most debonair?  Here's Chris Isaak singing Devil in Disguise.  What do you think?
I think Chris Isaak is perfect for Nicholas!  I could easily make that connection.  Now I have a face to go with my fantasy!  Thanks!

This entire book is full of lively characters, Tessa.  They were all so unique and interesting.  Was working with them easy, in terms of writing this story?
Liz, I'm thrilled that you liked them.  I've been known to step around my characters in my study rather than hurt their feelings by walking through them, so yes, I do get terribly involved with them.  I was fascinated by Nicholas and Alex.  They're such sophisticated men, and all the more so for not flaunting it, but you get the feeling that just beneath that debonair surface there is an edge.  They know how to fight, and they can do it without raising their voices or fists, but even so, you get the feeling that these two utterly charming men could hold their own in a bar room brawl and walk away smiling without so much as a crease in their dinner suits.
I felt that way too.  It takes a very strong and secure man to pull off that kind of strength while being so calm and collected.

And speaking of writing, do you just let the story take you, or do you have a certain way to get the story told (like an outline or something)?
Over the years I've learned to fly by the seat of my pants, otherwise, it becomes an exercise in joining the dots and that's the way it reads too.  You've got to let your characters develop their own voices, their own cares and concerns, their own passions and beliefs.  You've got let them develop their own story, let their voices shine through and listen to what they're telling you.  I start off writing them, but after a short time, they're pulling my strings, pushing me around, telling me what to do, which is more than a bit cheeky given that I gave them life so you'd think they'd show me a bit of gratitude, but no.

I do start out by writing detailed scene outlines but when it comes time to write the scene, I don't consult my original notes, as much not to break my mood as anything else.  After I've finished I read my original notes and I'm constantly amazed at how different the scene turned out to how I imagined it; how differently the characters spoke, the words they used, how they responded to each other.  Sometimes I'll blush and think, "Why ever did I think Nicholas would say that?  Nicholas would never say that."  I know they're becoming their own people when I have that reaction.

Voice is something I'm very passionate about in that I see it as my job to keep my voice the hell out of my work and let the characters speak for themselves.  I'd like to think that's what makes my characters lively.

Do you have any other books coming out soon?
At the moment I'm having a lovely time talking to readers about Bess, Nicholas & A Dog Called Bones.  I'll get back to work soon enough.

Ok, let’s lighten up and have some fun :)
I'm a writer – talking about myself is fun.  Didn't the earth move for you?
Oh, it absolutely did ;)

Favorite travel destination?
I haven't travelled nearly as much as I'd like to.  I'd dearly love to ensconce myself in some picturesque Irish cottage for a year to write my next book.
Sounds delightful!

Most unusual food you have eaten?
McDonalds.  It's the only thing in the world that doesn't taste a bit like chicken, even when it is actually chicken.

When you read, what kind of books do you grab first?
I love a good ghost story – a real, good old fashioned ghost story, as opposed to ectoplasmic thingies of the night.  When my mind is too full I'll go back to a comfort read like To Kill A Mockingbird or David Copperfield.  As much as they are about dark times, they're just so brimming with hope, optimism and the sense of what's right in the world.  I'll just as comfortably read a book like The Silence of The Lambs as read a classic, just so long as the writing is there.

How do you feel about social media?  Like it? Hate it?  Addicted to it?
I'm a new convert.  Social media is like one of those serendipitous conversations you strike up with a complete stranger on the train – it can really make your day.  I've met some thoroughly lovely people and only been stalked twice.   However, I'm still learning the ropes and I do find it a struggle time-wise.
Yes, it definitely can induce some major time suckage.  I am still learning to balance all of the different places myself.

Favorite drink (alcohol or otherwise)?
Can a favourite drink possibly not involve alcohol?  Like Bess, I'm enamoured of sauvignon blanc.  I also love a properly made margarita with good tequila, lime juice and triple sec, and preferably served with a side of Mexican banquet.  I adore frozen strawberry daiquiris, and banana daiquiris… and hell, now that I think about it, any daiquiri.  I'd sell my mother down the river for a pina colada… maybe I should stop there.
Oh, and I also like pineapple juice.  There.  That's non-alcoholic… unless you add some rum and coconut cream and turn it into a pina colada…
Ahh, a drinker after my own heart!

Ok, that’s about it for today.  Thank you so much for joining me in this interview, and for the great giveaway for the readers. I wish you the best of luck with this release! It’s been a lot of fun for me, and I hope to see more work from you in the future.
Hic.  Thank you so much, Liz.  It's been my great privilege and pleasure.

Synopsis:
Bess Saint Clair is about to lose everything and the only man who can save her is Nicholas Blake. It's just a pity she can't stand him.

Nicholas is a record industry hotshot with a reputation for being a Big, Bad Wolf. That’s okay by publicist Bess – she’s the sort of Little Red Riding Hood who eats wolves for breakfast. From the moment Nicholas and Bess clap eyes on each other they share a common bond: they want to tear each other’s throats out.

When Nicholas discovers that the man he has hired for the job is a woman, he’d like nothing better than to boot her out of his office. When Bess discovers he is one of those creatures of prehistoric legend – a male chauvinist – she’d like nothing better than to flip him the bird and turn on her heel.

But he needs her talent and she needs his money.

Each is hell bent on teaching the other a lesson. Both are about to learn a lesson they’ll never forget. The battle over who will wear the pants will be fiercest when neither is wearing any.

Funny, tender and deeply sensual, Bess, Nicholas & A Dog Called Bones is set in a picturesque valley vineyard and features a heroic, shameless sausage extortionist of a dog who is almost as human, and every bit as unforgettable, as Nicholas and Bess.

Bess, Nicholas & A Dog Called Bones - Tessa Armytage

Format: Ebook provided by author for review

From Goodreads:

It didn’t take long to realize that this book is so much more than just a love story.  It’s full of life, excitement, mystery, funny moments that will make you laugh, seduction, passion, heartbreak and tension.  And then even more on top of that.

But before I get to telling you how I feel about Bess and Nicholas, let’s talk about Bones.  Bones is a dog, but not just any dog.  The scenes with this dog will take you back and grasp your heart as you remember your favorite furry friend.  I laughed out loud, remembering how lucky I’ve been to befriend a dog or two in my lifetime.  This dog is full of personality and true to the synopsis – she loves sausage.  And she seems like she is indeed more intuitive and on the ball than her human counterparts.

Right away we meet Elizabeth and Nicholas.  To put it lightly, their first meeting does not go well.  But you can see sparks.  There is an electrical current that you can’t ignore.  Something is definitely going to happen.

“He was very still, so very still.  His eyes were all over her face; his lips parted but imparted no sound.”

I just loved that line.  It spoke to me.  You will see why when you read this book.  Unfortunately for you, I don’t like to give spoilers!

Nicholas is confident, living up to his player reputation.  Elizabeth is young and seemingly a little hot headed.  But they need each other.  He needs someone to do some PR work, and she desperately needs a job.  She fights tooth and nail, and she gets the job.

Nicholas gives Elizabeth a nickname.  Let me just say… As someone who is also named Elizabeth, I know just how many nicknames are available.  Lots.  Tons.  I’ve heard them all.  Libby, Betty, Eliza, Beth… you name it.  And none of those are my name.  I can totally feel Elizabeth’s frustration and irritation when Nicholas continually calls her Bess.  And then something changed.  She grew into it, and so did I.  No, don’t call me Bess ha-ha.  But I could completely understand how she was able to finally just go with it.  The man is charismatic, and it wasn’t long before I thought “Oh yeah, he could call me Bess.  Any.Time.He.Wants.
Of course there is some conflict, and a ton of passion.  Some scenes so steamy you will be absorbed and find yourself gripping the page.  The loves scenes were perfectly detailed and not the usual fare. Some were a bit erotic, some were sweet, and some made me sweat!

And then someone gets hurt.  And then another person. And your heart breaks right along with them.  I found myself thinking, “If they get together at this point, I will scream!!”  But at the same time wishing and hoping it would work out for them, because you know that what they shared was so perfect that some of us only dream of such a thing.  You get to go along on the trip with Bess.  You feel her jubilation, and you feel her heartbreak, and it is true and sincere.  Her pain is raw and real.  And personally, I felt like I could crawl right into bed too, and have that depressed cry that only comes after you've loved someone so entirely that your heart can't believe they are gone.

At first I had my reservations about this book.  I thought I’d get to read a love story; a satisfying, feel good love story.   I fully expected to enjoy it.  What I did not expect was a story filled with tension, passion, sensuality, and a feeling of “oh please let this work out for them!”  But that is what I got.  Oh, and a side of kink.  Hello?!?!  Is anyone on the speakerphone?  (That is most definitely an inside joke you will need to read the book to understand!)

This book will give you the unexpected.  You will go on a ride.  You will have some ups and some downs, and hope for this and “oh my goodness I can’t believe that!”   And it is definitely worth the read.

So come back in a couple days.  I’m going to have an interview with the author, Tessa Armytage.  And she is very graciously going to give away a copy of her eBook to one lucky winner.  Hopefully that will be you!

From Goodreads:
Nora Grey's life is still far from perfect. Surviving an attempt on her life wasn't pleasant, but at least she got a guardian angel out of it: a mysterious, magnetic, gorgeous guardian angel. But, despite his role in her life, Patch has been acting anything but angelic. He's more elusive than ever and even worse, he's started spending time with Nora's arch-enemy, Marcie Millar.

Nora would have hardly noticed Scott Parnell, an old family friend who has moved back to town, if Patch hadnt been acting so distant. Even with Scott's totally infuriating attitude Nora finds herself drawn to him - despite her lingering feeling that he's hiding something.

Haunted by images of her murdered father, and questioning whether her nephilim bloodline has anything to do with his death, Nora puts herself increasingly in dangerous situations as she desperately searches for answers. But maybe some things are better left buried, because the truth could destroy everything - and everyone - she trusts

I found Crescendo, the second book of the Hush Hush saga a little disappointing. The story continues with Nora and Patch’s love story and the mystery surrounding Nora’s ancestry.  Now that Nora is aware of Patch’s true Nature she must settle into a relationship with a fallen angel. Even though, the premise of this book is the same as the previous one, it turns into a story of a teenage girl dealing with her insecurities.  I was used to the Nora from Hush Hush who was an assertive teenager dealing with the death of her father, her ancestry and the normal everyday problems. Unfortunately, on this second part she starts acting jealous of Patch as he develops friendships with other people.
The story gives more focus to Nora and her relationships with Vee, her best friend, and Marcie a girl who has made her life hell since first grade. Following Vee’s dislike of Patch, Nora focuses more on fighting with him.  As Nora’s insecurities surface her relationship with Patch suffers and it affects the main plot of the story. I felt like the result of this makes Patch a distant character in the story. Vee and Marcie both could have grown emotionally as well; however, Vee continues to act as a careless teenager. Marcie continues to make Nora’s life miserable for reasons never explained. I never understood the hatred that she has for Nora and it is never clear on this book.
There are good things in the book too like the introduction of new characters Scott and Rixon. Scott becomes close to Nora who shares the same background as him and Rixon is Patch’s best friend, Marcie, although, not a new character is a central plot for this story as Patch becomes close to her.
I would have loved for the story to focus more on Patch’s background and to see his relationship with Nora develop more. Unlike the first part this one end in a cliffhanger. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers but on this book it helps to make the whole book worth reading.

A Demon Does It Better - Linda Wisdom

Author: Linda Wisdom
Format: NetGalley ebook

From Goodreads:
Bestselling author Linda Wisdom, with 13 million category romances sold, is working to build her single title audience with the hottest new area of the romance category– sexy demon heroes.
Lovely witch Lili Carter takes a job at a paranormal hospital where patients have been disappearing. There she encounters Jared, a dangerously sexy demon on a mission that gets Lili into a world of trouble. Lili can't avoid Jared for long and soon they find themselves creating a whole new kind of magick...

Before starting this book I expected to read something that was witty, humorous, fun, and of course paranormal.  I wasn’t disappointed at all.  This book was every bit of what I’ve come to expect from Linda Wisdom and more.

This book is about Lilianna, Lili for short.  Lili is one of the witches banned from the Academy in 1313 (along with Jazz, Blaire, Thea and some others).  She is a healer and a doctor – not to mention a very powerful witch.  She has just begun a new job at Crying Souls hospital.  Sounds like a creepy place, right?  You have no idea!  She is on the search for her friend Sera, whom disappeared without a trace while working at the hospital.  Worse yet – she’s not the only one.  But for some reason, no one is taking notice.

While working there she is assigned to work downstairs, home to the mentally ill in the paranormal world.  There are seven patients and all are deemed to be very dangerous.  Of course they are, that’s why they have two giant ogre guards watching them around the clock, right? These two ogres are a real piece of work, definitely not beings you’d want to meet in a dark alley… or heck, even a light alley.  But Lili isn’t scared of them.  Lili isn’t outwardly scared of anyone.  She is a very strong female character, and that’s what I loved about her.  She was compassionate and caring, and made friends easily.

She also meets the other patients, including one referred to by Dr. Mortimer as only Patient 1172.  There is instant attraction there, and it is definitely heated.  The thing is, Lili has seen Patient 1172 before.   Patient 1172 is a shadow demon named Jared.  Jared is every bit the paranormal lead character you hope to find in these books.  He is strong and caring, seductive , dark and mysterious.  And he knows what he wants.

I really enjoyed reading about Lili and Jared, watching their impossible situation grow and flourish.   The scene on the Ferris wheel was enchanting.  I could easily picture the twinkling lights below, the warm air, the heated presence of Jared next to Lili.  I felt his fear of heights, and how that diminished and the acknowledgement of his feelings – even if only to himself – endearing.

“Lili’s eyes widened at his one-word declaration that vibrated with demon power the way it hadn’t when he said the word on the Ferris wheel.  While she didn’t know a lot about demons, she did know what just happened.”

The passion between the two of them was hot and yet very tender and romantic.  It definitely made me eager to turn every page and want to read more.
But let’s not forget who almost stole the whole show here.  Cleo… otherwise known as Cleopatra.  Yes, THE Cleopatra.  She is witty, seductive, caring and a bit of a party cat.  Wait!  Did I just say cat?  Let’s just say that once you see Cleo in action, especially when she gets loaded on cat nip wine, you will never look at felines the same again.  I really loved her character.  She often broke up the tension, or lent a soft spot when things were getting rough.  She is definitely a scene stealer, but helped make this story everything that it was.

Something else I really enjoyed was how the other witches were mentioned in this book.  If there is one thing I go crazy for (other than super hot alpha males) is crossover characters.  It really helps build the whole world, not just for a scene or even a book.  And Linda Wisdom does it wonderfully.  I’m really hoping that all of the witches will get their own book eventually.

Halfway through the book and I made the note in my notebook that I was in no way disappointed with this book.  I was wishing Lili and Jared could make more of a connection quicker than they did, yet the build up was wonderful.  There were several plot lines opened up in this story, and I was a bit worried how everything would come together.  But seriously, that was just silly of me to worry.  The author handled everything perfectly, and there isn’t a single thing I would change about this story.

A Demon Does It Better is number 2 in the Demons series by Linda Wisdom.  I haven’t read number one yet, but I knew that it was about a different witch.  I had no trouble understanding the timeline and felt that this book could easily stand alone.  But of course, I am definitely going to get my hands on Demons Are A Girl’s Best Friend (Demons #1) just as soon as I can!
